CHAPTER HUNDRED-NINETYFOUR-1
HAILEY
I nodded, my body too tired to argue. I was about to get up and leave when I saw Dominic walking int room, his face a mask of cold fury.
“What’s going on?” he asked, his eyes scanning the room, taking in the scene. He looked at me, his expression softening slightly when he saw the tears in my eyes.
“They took him off the ventilator,” I said, a smile spreading across my face despite my exhaustion. “He breathing on his own. The doctor said he’s doing remarkably well.”
Dominic’s face broke into a wide grin, the tension in his shoulders easing. He walked over to me and
wrapped his arms around me, pulling me into a tight hug.
“That’s the best news I’ve heard all day,” he said, his voice a low, happy rumble. “I knew he could do it.”
We stood there for a few moments, just holding each other, the relief washing over us in a warm, comforting wave. Then Dominic pulled away, his expression turning serious.
“I need to talk to you,” he said, his voice a low growl.
“What is it?” I asked, my heart sinking.
“Not here,” he said, his eyes flicking towards the doctor and the nurse, who were trying to give us some
privacy. “Outside.”
I nodded, my stomach twisting into a knot. I knew what this was about. The rumors. The pack. The mes: we were in. I followed him out of the room, my heart pounding in my chest.
We walked down the corridor, the sterile silence of the hospital a stark contrast to the storm brewing
inside me. He led me to a small, empty waiting room, closing the door behind us.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, my voice trembling.
He didn’t answer right away. He just stood there, his back to me, his hands clenched into fists I could see the tension in his shoulders, the rigid set of his jaw.
“I found out who started the rumors,” he said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble.
My blood ran cold. “Who?”
He turned around, his eyes dark with a cold, hard rage. “It was Yasmine’s best friend, a woman named Cassandra. She was also one of the two who confronted you yesterday
I stared at him, my mind reeling. Cassandra. I knew her. Not well, but I knew her. She was always in the background, a quiet, unassuming woman who kept to herself. I never would have suspected her I saw her a few times with Yasmine, wondering how they even became friends.
“Why?” I asked, my voice a raw whisper “Why would she do something like that?”
“Because she feels like her best friend could never have killed herself. So the quickest person to blame was you, because you hated her and everyone knows it. She said that you were always jealous of her closeness to me, that you saw her as a threat, and she thinks you made a move to get rid of her
“That’s insane,” I said, my voice shaking with disbelief and anger. “I would never… I couldn’t..”
“I know,” he said, his voice softening. “But that’s not all.”
“What else?”
“Her father is a very powerful man in the pack. He has a lot of influence. And he has a long standing grudge against my family. Against me. Cassandra’s mother was my father’s second choice for a mate, but he chose my mother instead. Her family has never forgotten that. They see me as a reminder of what they lost. And now, they see you as a threat to their power.”
