CHAPTER TWOHUNDRED-THREE-1
DOMINIC
We were gathered in the center of the village, the entire pack gathered around us. The sun was high in the sky, the air was hot and humid, the tension was thick and heavy. Everyone was watching, everyone was waiting, the anticipation in the air almost suffocating.
Hailey wasn’t here. As much as she insisted on being here, the doctor had specifically said that the stress from the trial could induce the baby. It was too risky. So, she was staying in her room, resting. And Hailey might try to stop my judgement, even when someone tried to kill her. She was that good of a person.
The maids were brought before the crowd, their hands bound, their faces pale and terrified. The anger in me burned, the rage in me a white hot fire. I was going to find the truth. I was going to find the one responsible. And I was going to make them pay.
“These two maids,” I said, my voice a low, dangerous rumble. “Have been charged with the attempted murder of the my wife, and the attempted murder of my unborn child. The poison they used was slowly killing her, it was enough to cause great harm to her and the baby. This was an act of treason. A deliberate
act of hatred. A deliberate act of evil. And there will be no mercy for traitors. So why don’t you make things
easier for yourselves by confessing and taking the easy way out? It will save us a lot of time.”
Rachel looked up, her face white, wide with terror.

“I didn’t do it,” she said, her voice a shaky whisper. “I swear I didn’t do it. I didn’t poison the tea. I didn’t do anything. I’m innocent. Please. Please believe us. Please don’t hurt us. Please.”
She started crying, her shoulders shaking, the tears rolling down her cheeks. Lucy was next to her, her face a mask of terror, her eyes wide with fear. They were terrified. Good.
“You have one last chance,” I said, my voice a low, rumbling growl. “Both of you. Start talking. Now. Or face the consequences. I won’t ask again. Who did it? Who did this? Who tried to hurt my wife? Who tried to kill my unborn child? Who?”
Rachel and Lucy looked at each other, the fear and terror on their faces obvious. They knew what was coming. They knew there was no way out. They knew the only way to survive was to talk. But they were silent. Their mouths shut. Their faces white. Their eyes wide.
The rage in me flared.
“No answer?” I asked, my voice a low, menacing rumble. “Okay, fine. You leave me no choice.”
I walked toward them, the anger in me burning.
“No,” Rachel said, her voice a high-pitched, terrified scream. “Please, no! Please! Please, don’t hurt us. We are innocent!”
“You didn’t do it,” I said, my voice a low, menacing rumble. “Well, let’s find out, shall we? Let’s see who the

real traitor is.”
I grabbed her arm, my hand closing around her wrist. She screamed, the fear in her obvious
“Stop!” Lucy said, her voice a loud, terrified shout. “Please, stop! Don’t hurt her. Please. I did it. I did it. It was me. I’m the one who poisoned the tea. Please, let her go” The whole crowd gasped.
“What did you just say?” I asked, the rage in me simmering.
“I did it,” she said, her voice trembling. “It was me. I’m the one who poisoned the tea. Please, let her go. She didn’t do anything. It was me. It was all me. Please”
The anger in me burned, the rage in me a white hot flame.
“So, you’re the one who tried to kill my wife. And my unborn child,”
“Yes,” she said, her voice a low, quiet whisper. “I didn’t want to. But I had to. You have to understand. You have to believe me. It was the only way. It was the only way to stop this. To end this. You have to believe me. I didn’t have a choice.”
