I had spent the rest of the night in the ICU as expected of me as the head doctor, and the following day was a busy one. Valerie had gone home and spent the night with Liam and a pang of guilt had stayed with me all through the night.

Liam knows what his mom does, how she saves lives, and he even called me a hero for saving people’s lives, but I still missed my baby regardless.

There were tons of paperwork and patients to treat. I had to go and see a few of my patients, and

after that, I headed to the cafeteria.

Grabbing a quick coffee, and a sandwich, I sat down in the corner, and ate. Valerie was still busy with some patients, and Liam was at school.

“Hello, stranger.” I heard a deep voice, and turned around to see Giovanni standing by the table.

“Hey, Giovanni. Sit.”

He smiled, and sat down across from me.

“How’s he doing?” He asked.

“Good, his vitals are strong, and the poison is slowly wearing off. He’s stable, and will wake up soon. But he’s going to have to stay in the hospital for a couple more days, so we can carefully

monitor his recovery.”

He nodded, and let out a sigh.

“He’ll hate that.”

“Yeah, but it’s what’s best for him. He can’t go around fighting people when he can barely stand.”

“Dominic hates hospitals.”

“I can see why.”

“So, you’re really a doctor, huh? It feels unbelievable that you could even save him or anyone else. You even have awards to show just how talented you are.”

I sighed, and took a sip of my coffee.

“You did some background check on me, huh?”

“Technically, you have my nephew. And I need to be sure that you are taking care of him and not

harming him in any way. But so far, I’m so proud of you for your achievements and I’m sure Liam is too. You didn’t let the situation with my brother stop you from finally unveiling the potential that he has been covering, by you just been known as the Luna. But now, you’re not only a great mother to your son, you’re a successful doctor and a damn good one at that. So, congratulations, Hailey. You did it.”

I smiled, feeling the intensity of his words and I realized that I don’t give myself much credit. People notice the greatness I don’t notice, and I kept asking, why me? What’s so special about me, that they give me multiple awards, don’t I save lives like every regular doctor does, why does mine stand out?

I know now.

“Thank you, Giovanni.”

“No, thank you. You’re the best thing that has happened to our pack. Our medical services were

wack and failing. Lots of our people died after an attack because the doctors were not

competent. But you, changed that.”

I took another sip of my coffee, and put it down. “You know, as much as I love it here, the pay and all. It’s only a matter of time before Dominic finds out about Liam. I can’t keep my son caged, all

because I don’t want his father to see him. I have to let him live a normal life like every kid of his age, go to the park, the movies, school trips, and I don’t want to deny him all of that just because his father is the most arrogant asshole I have ever met.”

“Well, I understand, and I’m glad you’re not trying to keep him hidden away. I’ll be more than happy to have my nephew around and spoil him rotten. Besides, he already knows me. This pack is a big one, and trust me, Dominic is too busy shoving his face into the pack’s duties and his business, that he won’t have time to notice a little kid around. We’ll just keep a close eye on him. Don’t worry, you can have as much fun as you want without having to watch your backs. Just don’t overdo, and wait till his stupid obsession with you is over.

“Yeah, right. I actually don’t understand that. Why on earth has he been acting like he hadn’t called the shots five years ago and asked for a divorce? Why is he acting like he doesn’t remember all the horrible things he has done to me? Like he hadn’t done them, like it was all a pigment of my

“Because, he’s the biggest jackass alive. That’s the only explanation. Don’t let it get to you, and don’t let him ruin the progress you’ve made so far. He’s not worth your time. But, there is something you need to know.”

“What?”

“Dominic isn’t the same man you knew five years ago. He’s different now. He’s not the same man that broke your heart. He’s not the same man that made you want to leave. I’m not trying to make any excuses for him, but he’s a lot different. So, I just wanted to let you know, so you don’t have this image of him being this horrible guy in your mind. It’s as if Yasmine might be brainwashing him. Because how else do I explain this?”

“Giovanni, whatever change Dominic has now is none of my business, as it doesn’t erase the past.

You can’t change the past, no matter how much you want to. Besides, nothing he could ever say or do will ever excuse what he has done. It’s not my business, and I can’t bring myself to care

anymore.”

“Well, okay. Whatever floats your boat. You’re the doctor. But, the moment you find out that Yasmine is a manipulative bitch, and is controlling the Alpha. I think you would have a different

opinion on the matter.”

“Giovanni, it’s not that easy. Nothing about the past can be erased. Even if I wanted to. I’m not the same person anymore, and I have moved on.”

“Have you, really? The fear in your eyes was evident when I came in and saw you treating him. I could hear your heartbeat from a mile away, and it was pounding like crazy. Your face was pale, and I could tell that you were scared.”

“Yeah, because he was dying. I’m a doctor. I save lives. That’s what I do.”

“It was more than that. But, I’m not here to force you into anything. As much as I want you to see the truth, the choice is yours. But, if you want, you can always ask me.”

“Thanks, but no thanks. I can’t. The moment I allow him back into my life, everything is going to be the same, and I don’t want that.”

“Alright, well, you have my number, so call me when he wakes up. And, please, eat something more than just a sandwich. I don’t want you getting sick.”

I nodded, and waved goodbye to him.

Taking a bite of the sandwich, I closed my eyes, and tried to focus.
