Catherine and Lawrence walked out together, fingers entwined. Nicol stayed behind, answering questions from the press. The news about the trial was already all over the world.

Alice stumbled out of the courthouse, completely lost. The sunlight outside was harsh, almost too bright to bear. All she could think about was saving Shirley. In her heart, she knew only Nestor could help.

She flagged down a taxi and told the driver to take her to the Blair Estate.

At the Blair Estate, one of the housekeepers was caught off guard when Nestor walked in unexpectedly. “Mr. Blair, you’re back? Are you feeling better?”

Nestor nodded, looking healthier than he had in weeks. He settled onto the sofa, clearly waiting for someone.

He was waiting for Alice.

About thirty minutes later, Alice’s cab rolled up. She stepped out and immediately noticed a police car parked out front. Her heart skipped, but she pushed her worry aside. Seeing Nestor was all that mattered.

She hurried through the door and spotted a housekeeper working in the garden. “Is Nestor home?”

“Yes ma’am, he’s inside,” the housekeeper replied.

Relief swept over Alice. Maybe there was still hope for Shirley.

She rushed into the living room and saw Nestor sitting there. The sight of him made her burst into tears. She dropped down next to him, crying her heart out.
