At The James Group headquarters, Waldo was in the middle of a call with his father when a police captain knocked on the door and walked in, two officers behind him.
Waldo froze for a second, then forced a polite smile. “Is something wrong, officer?”
“Waldo, we’ve received a tip that you put out a hit on Lawrence on the dark web. You’ll need to come with us.”
Waldo’s expression turned stiff with shock. He tried to brush it off, laughing awkwardly. “There has to be some mistake. Why would I do something like that? I’d never post such nonsense, and I have no reason to.”
“We have evidence, sir. Please come with us.”
Waldo could see there was no way out. He took a slow breath, trying to steady himself. “I… I want to call my lawyer.”
He picked up the phone and dialed the legal department. “Have Ted meet me at the police station.”
A few minutes later, Ted joined him as they headed toward the lobby. Suddenly, a crowd of reporters appeared, microphones and cameras shoved in their faces.
“Waldo, can you tell us why the police are questioning you?”
“Is The James Group involved in any illegal activities?”
Waldo put up his hand to block his face, his expression dark. “No comment.”
