KINGSTON
I did not expect to come home to whatever mess that was. Everyone is yelling, talking, and offering their version of what happened, but I can’t seem to care enough. I should, but my mind is with the woman sobbing in Noah’s room.
“Lexie,” I call out, my eyes wandering the room for her. “Go and fetch your Luna her migraine pills, they’re in her room.”
Lexie nods, “Yes, alpha.”
“She just hurt Seraphine and you’re concerned with giving her painkillers?” Audrey gasps, “What about Seraphine?” She asks, motioning to her. I try not to look at her, but she’s pretty hard to ignore. She wails loudly when shifted from the floor to the stretcher. “She is badly hurt.”
“This is an unfortunate situation,” I sigh. “But Seraphine isn’t my wife, my wife is my priority.”
“Kingston, you’re out Alpha. You have a duty to the pack before her.”
“Fuck that,” I grumble. The duty I have to this pack comes second, and Seraphine is alive, she’s conscious, so that's a good sign, right? “How is she doing maddox?”
“Can’t say,” he sighs. “The clinic isn’t equipped for this kind of emergency, so we’ll rush her to the hospital, I’ll contact them right now.”
I nod, walking away, but something catches my wrist. I look back to find Audrey’s hand tightly wrapped around my wrist, her eyes watering. “Kingston, can you come with us?” She sniffs. “I’m scared.”
“I can’t, I have to check on Aeliana.”
“I’ll stay with her, you go.” Danielle offers, nervously scratching her arm. “This feels important.”
“I’ll meet you at the hospital,” I tell her.
Audrey lets go of my arm and is led away by Gemma. I make my way to Noah’s room before heading out, I make sure Aeliana is okay, as okay as she can be while sobbing with guilt. I do try to console her, but she’s inconsolable, so I leave her to Danielle and Noah.
At the hospital, Audrey is sobbing too, worse and louder than Aeliana was. It’s like I traded one broken-hearted woman for another, still, I’d take Audrey’s cries over Aeliana’s. At least here, I can shut them out, I don’t feel the urge to console her, I feel concerned for Seraphine and her child, and for myself, because I somehow can’t be bothered.
“Miss Audrey, calm down.” The nurse tells her. Her patience with Audrey warrants a raise, she's been calm and sympathetic without crossing any boundaries. “Your friend is going to be alright.”
“She’s not!” She sobs, “She’s fighting for her life right now.”
I take a glance at my watch. We’ve been here ten minutes, and we’ll be here longer. “I’ll get you some water,” I say, excusing myself.
