My brother.
He’s here, and he’s right behind me. “Hide,” I tell Rowan, my voice panicked.
Rowan frowns, “What did you say?”
I turn to my left and catch sight of my other brother, showing a stranger his phone screen. “My brothers,” I tell him. “They’re here. You need to leave immediately. Please go,” I beg, if my brothers see him, it’ll be a mess. I may not have mentioned his name, but they might know some things.
“You look pale,” Danielle frowns. “Are you—”
“Go,” I snap, my voice unintentionally loud, and I know my brother heard me because his ears stay perked to the sound of my voice. It’s one rule our father has, he trained them to recognise and listen for my voice in any crowded room. “Go,” I whisper, but neither one of them moves.
My brother, the one who was just behind me and almost walked past me, turns around, a wide smile spreading on his face when he finally sees me. “Princess,” he smiles. “Found her!” He yells, his voice filling the half-empty lounge.
“Aspen,” I smile.
“Give your brother a hug,” he smiles, approaching me with wide arms.
I put my cup on top of my suitcase and hug him. “Hey,” I whisper.
“My turn!” Someone announces, and before I know it, I’m pulled into brother number two’s arms. “My child.” He sighs, kissing the top of my head and swinging me from side to side in his arms.
Ares.
The youngest of my brothers, he and I are closer in age, and he keeps referring to me as his child because I grew up taking shadowing him while he shadowed our older brothers.
When he finally lets me breathe, I catch sight of Calix, his gaze assessing already. “Come here, baby girl. I missed you.”
I fall into his arms, “I missed you, too, Calix.” I tell him, hanging onto him. He smells like home, he smells like Dad, he smells like safety—they all do.
Calix sniffs me, “You’ve been away too long that now you’re starting to smell rogue.”
