Chapter 18 A Glimpse Through the Glass

Hegreau.

Evening shadows stretched long across the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a soft, golden hue across Axel’s face. Gone was the cool indifference of their first encounter at the airport-he looked warmer now.

“I’m Florence Wraith,” she offered, breaking the silence.

Axel stood to pull out the chair for her, his hand resting lightly on the backrest, fingers elegant and precise.

He smiled, the corners of his lips lifting with a trace of amusement. “Ms. Wraith. Never thought we’d be meeting under this occasion.”

Florence placed the folder of documents gently on the table. “It’s quite the coincidence.”

As she sat, Axel slid the menu toward her.

“Let’s eat. Any dietary restrictions I should know about, Ms. Wraith?”

His slender fingers traced the edge of a seafood entrée photo. “Their crab is excellent. Any allergies I should be aware of?”

That caught Florence off guard.

Back when she attended dinners with Baldwin, he always ordered what Ursa liked-never once asked about her preferences.

He didn’t even know she was allergic.

“I have mild allergies to seafood and almonds. Everything else is fine,” she replied, then pivoted, “About the investment-”

“Let’s eat,” Axel said with an easy smile, snapping the menu closed and waving the server over.

“Work can wait till we’ve had something decent.”

Throughout dinner, Axel navigated the conversation with effortless poise.

He shifted from discussing recent developments in the Galeborn Pack to highlighting Hegreau’s cityscape, carefully steering away from anything remotely related to the contract.

Florence tried a bite of the braised beef, so tender it practically melted in her mouth. She had to admit it was hard to focus on business when the food was this good.

Florence had just unlocked her phone when it buzzed-Zera’s name lit up the screen. “Well? Did he sign?”

“He said he needs more time to consider,” Florence replied, watching Axel’s black sedan blend into the line of traffic across the street. “But he’s … interesting.”

“Watch out! He could be stalling!”

Zera warned on the other end, “Word is he’s been talking to several other colleges lately. You can’t fall behind! Galeborn Pack’s land is vast and their pockets deep. Any school they back is guaranteed to rise to the top.”

Florence opened the file on her phone, reviewing a draft of the revised contract. “Relax. I know what I’m doing.”

She stared out into the night, recalling how Axel had paused for a long time on one particular page.

She had left that clause in deliberately-a bargaining chip.

Florence had confidence in sealing the deal. Axel might be hard to read, but something deep down told her he’d come around.

It was a gut feeling. And Florence had learned to trust her instincts.
