Chapter 18 A Glimpse Through the Glass
Hegreau.
Evening shadows stretched long across the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a soft, golden hue across Axel’s face. Gone was the cool indifference of their first encounter at the airport-he looked warmer now.
“I’m Florence Wraith,” she offered, breaking the silence.
Axel stood to pull out the chair for her, his hand resting lightly on the backrest, fingers elegant and precise.
He smiled, the corners of his lips lifting with a trace of amusement. “Ms. Wraith. Never thought we’d be meeting under this occasion.”
Florence placed the folder of documents gently on the table. “It’s quite the coincidence.”
As she sat, Axel slid the menu toward her.
“Let’s eat. Any dietary restrictions I should know about, Ms. Wraith?”
His slender fingers traced the edge of a seafood entrée photo. “Their crab is excellent. Any allergies I should be aware of?”
That caught Florence off guard.
Back when she attended dinners with Baldwin, he always ordered what Ursa liked-never once asked about her preferences.
He didn’t even know she was allergic.
“I have mild allergies to seafood and almonds. Everything else is fine,” she replied, then pivoted, “About the investment-”
“Let’s eat,” Axel said with an easy smile, snapping the menu closed and waving the server over.
“Work can wait till we’ve had something decent.”
Throughout dinner, Axel navigated the conversation with effortless poise.
He shifted from discussing recent developments in the Galeborn Pack to highlighting Hegreau’s cityscape, carefully steering away from anything remotely related to the contract.
Florence tried a bite of the braised beef, so tender it practically melted in her mouth. She had to admit it was hard to focus on business when the food was this good.
