Chapter 10

Sierra reacted instantly. “Ethan, step on it. Now!”

At the same time, Ethan spotted a dozen vehicles tailing them. A he floored the gas, gunshots rang out around them. Sierra heard glass shatter and rain down around her.

Ethan shielded Sierra’s head with one hand, pushing her down into the scat. “Everyone ke wolf pups.”

The gunfire intensified, hammering the jeep like a sudden storm The police on the other end of Ethan’s call immediately realized something was wrong and scrambled for backup.

Just then, the rear window exploded loudly, glass flying everywhere. The wolf pup in Sierra’s arms growled, low and deep.

Sierra hushed it gently. “It’s okay. Don’t be scared.”

The pup whined softly. “I smell my mom and the others. They’re in those trucks behind us.”

Sierra carefully placed the pup near her feet and checked the rearview mirror. The military-green trucks were now barely three hundred feet back, closing in from all sides. They were encircling them.

With a harsh screech, the jeep swerved sharply, nearly tipping over. Ethan slammed the brakes just in time to keep it upright.

But the moment he tried to speed up again, the trucks boxed them in completely, forcing them to stop. A burly man with a thick beard and a military coat jumped out from the lead truck, shotgun in hand.

Ethan’s forehead was slick with sweat as he glanced at Sierra. No matter what, he was determined to get her and the others out alive, even if it cost him his life.

He glanced at the rearview mirror and said to Mark, “I’ll get out and distract them. You take the wheel. When there’s an opening, floor it and break through. Don’t wait for me. Just go.”

Mark frowned, “But what about you?”

Ethan didn’t answer. Backup was at least half an hour away. If he didn’t buy time now, none of them would make it.

Just as Ethan reached for the door, Sierra grabbed his arm. Her expression was deadly serious as she shook her head.

Ethan started to argue, but Sierra had already passed the wolf pup under the seat to Timothy. “Sierra, you…” Ethan’s voice was tight with worry. His face showed clear disagreement.

But Sierra met his eyes with a steady look. “I know what I’m doing.” Then she turned to the others in the back. “These poachers want the wolf pups.

“If they can’t get them, they won’t risk harming us. Stay alert. If you get a chance to escape with the pups, take it. Ethan and I will cover you.”

Everyone exchanged uneasy glances. Finally, Sierra and Ethan slowly pushed their doors open and stepped out.

Outside, Sierra immediately noticed most of the poachers were injured. Bandages wrapped tightly around their arms and legs, fresh blood still seeping through. The sharp scent of blood hung thick in the cold air.

Suddenly, heavy pounding erupted from inside the trucks, followed by the exhausted, desperate howls of wolves.

Held tightly by Timothy, Alex, and Mark, the wolf pups began howling back in response. Soon it became a rising, haunting chorus that echoed across the vast desert. The banging against the metal walls grew stronger, more frantic.

The barrel dug deeper into Patrick’s skin. Sweat beaded on his forehead as he yelled, “Stand down. Everyone stand down.”

Sierra scanned the nervous poachers and the captive wolves. A plan clicked into place. “Move,” she ordered Patrick, nudging him toward the back of the truck.

Confused and terrified, Patrick obeyed.

When they reached the rear, Sierra called to Ethan, “Open it. Let them out.”

“Have you lost your mind?” Patrick cried, panicked. “Wolves don’t forget. They’ll kill us all.”

But Sierra just gave Ethan a look. With no hesitation, he flung the doors open. In the darkness, pairs of glowing green eyes fixed on Patrick.

One by one, the wolves leaped out, gathering silently behind Sierra. Their coats were stained with blood from the previous night’s fight. They stood tense, hackles raised, waiting.

Patrick thought Sierra had lost her mind until he saw a faint, chilling smile on her face. Then it hit him. Something was terribly wrong.

The wolves had stopped right at Sierra’s side, their eyes locked to the poachers, muscles tensed, like they were just waiting for Sierra’s signal to tear thein apart.

Sierra’s voice rang out, cold and clear. “Go on. Avenge your pac

A chorus of savage howls erupted. The next second, the largest wolf lunged straight at Patrick, jaws clamping onto his face and tearing it half away. His scream ripped through the night.
