Chapter 101
Chapter 101
Sierra kept the live stream going until evening, only finally wrapping it up when the truck driver called to say Pip had arrived.
The zoo didn’t have any elephants yet, and Thomas was worried Pip would feel lonely. So, he assigned three keepers to look after Pip and even built a spacious elephant enclosure just for him.
After all, in zoos, with the limited space and artificial environment, it’s hard to prevent animals from developing stereotypic behaviors.
Thomas put his heart and soul into it, hoping to give them more companionship and more room, so these animals who could never return to the wild could live out their days in peace.
When Sierra stepped out of the zoo, Thomas, Ethan, and the others were already waiting at the entrance.
Ryan, who was working as a security guard at the zoo, stood there clutching a pitchfork, looking stunned.
Just as Sierra walked out, the truck carrying Pip pulled up to the zoo entrance.
Inside the truck, Pip spotted Sierra through the bars from afar. It excitedly raised its trunk and let out a happy trumpeting sound.
“Sierra, I’m here!” Pip called out.
Pip’s injuries had been horrific, and even now, Sierra could clearly see its tiny body covered in scars, both big and small.
But Pip didn’t seem to notice the pain at all. It tilted its head, fixing Sierra with its little eyes.
When Sierra walked up to the truck, Pip plopped down on its knees, wiggling its little butt, reaching out with its soft trunk to nuzzle Sierra’s head.
“It’s Sierra’s scent!” Pip’s trunk gently tapped Sierra’s head, and it beamed with joy, feeling over the moon inside. “Sierra, I missed you so much!”
Sierra reached out and held Pip’s trunk, not bothering to hide how much she adored it. “I missed you, too, Pip.”
Sure enough, no animal could resist Sierra’s affectionate words.
Pip excitedly flapped its big, floppy ears. If it weren’t still in the truck, it’d be happily dashing around the place.
Soon enough, the staff came over to help Pip get out of the truck.
If it were a grown elephant, this would’ve been a breeze. But Pip was just a little guy. Its legs didn’t even reach the ground, so they had to use some equipment to help it down.
Thankfully, Sierra was right there, talking to Pip and keeping it calm. Faced with all those big, unfamiliar machines, Pip wasn’t fazed at all. It just started exploring everything around it with its curious trunk.
On this journey, Pip got to see stuff most elephants could only dream of in their whole lives.
It had gone from the rainforest straight into a modern city, right smack in the middle of the human world.
Humans were way smarter than any elephant herd could ever hope to be.
It was shocking that these little humans could create things so cool and so scary at the same time.
Once Pip stepped out of the cage, it gawked at everything around it. The muddy trails it used to know were now hard

concrete, and the lush banana forests had vanished, replaced by skyscrapers everywhere.
Pip spun around in circles, getting itself so dizzy it almost toppled over.
“Follow me, Pip! Let me show you your new home,” Sierra called out.
“Yay!” Pip didn’t hesitate for a second. It trotted right after Sierra, tail wagging with excitement.
Sierra was totally oblivious, but after they left, Ryan was so shocked that his jaw nearly hit the ground.
He couldn’t figure out if it was the elephant was just super smart, or if Sierra was some kind of animal genius.
He’d been standing off to the side and hadn’t seen Sierra say a single word to the elephant, but Pip just obediently followed her like a little puppy.
He was wondering if he was just seeing things. He saw that when Pip trailed after Sierra, it was actually bouncing along. bobbing its head like a little kid.
Ryan rubbed his eyes, thinking, ‘No way, I must be seeing things. There’s just no way that really happened!’
Meanwhile, Sierra led Pip over to the elephant enclosure.
Pip looked around left and right, its eyes wide with curiosity like a little kid.
When they got to the entrance of the elephant enclosure, Sierra gave Pip a gentle pat on the head. “Pip, this is your new home now.
“The keepers will take you out for a walk around the zoo every week, but you have to behave and not run off.
“Otherwise, you’ll have to stay inside until it’s time to rejoin your herd. Understand?”
If Sierra could really get along well with an animal, she’d let the keepers take it out for a walk and let it stretch its legs. But not every animal was suitable for that.
Pip might be a bit mischievous, but it’s not aggressive at all, so it’s totally fine to let it out for a walk.
Pip blinked up at Sierra, its eyes full of curiosity, and asked, “Can I go into the city?”
On the way here, it had seen so many glittering things in the city, and it thought it could spend its whole life just looking at them and still never get tired.
Sierra sighed and gave Pip a gentle boop on the head. “No way! If you sneak out, both you and I will end up in the police station.
“You won’t just be banned from leaving the zoo. You’ll be sent straight back to Evergreen Valley that very day, and you’ll never see me again for the rest of your life.”
Pip’s fur bristled, and it looked totally freaked out. “No! I don’t want that to happen! I’ll be super good, I promise! If the keepers let me drink water, I won’t refuse. Oh, right!”
Pip stuck out its big floppy ears, as if something had just popped into its mind. It waggled its head back and forth, scanning the area like it was searching for something.
“Sierra, where’s the sugarcane you said I could have?” Pip called out, craning its neck and looking all around, a little disappointed when it didn’t spot its treat.
After Pip asked about the sugarcane, Sierra didn’t bat an eye, but Thomas, realizing what Pip was searching for, suddenly flushed red.

Sure enough, Sierra shot him a playful grin and teased, “Mr. Monroe, Pip’s asking where all that sugarcane you planted went.”
Thomas let out a couple of awkward laughs, pointing at the sugarcane that was barely as tall as Pip’s little legs. “Yeah. I planted it, but it just hasn’t had time to grow yet.”
Pip just stared at the tiny sugarcane, at a complete loss for words.
As Sierra walked away, she could still hear Pip’s grumbling protests and its demanding questions for Thomas trailing after her.
Ethan and the others followed Sierra out of the elephant enclosure.
Mark, hanging back, looked a bit uneasy. “Sierra, are we kind of ditching Mr. Monroe here?”
Sierra paused and nodded with mock seriousness. “Yeah, a little bit.”

But Pip’s super clingy, so Thomas’s just going to have to take one for the team. After all, he’s the one who invited Pip in the first place.
Sierra shrugged. “That’s just how it is. Mr. Monroe’s got a soft spot for Pip.”
With that, Sierra headed back to her staff dorm, freshened up, and crashed into bed.

The next morning, Sierra decided to drop by and see Pip outside the elephant enclosure.
On her way there, she bumped into Thomas, chugging along on a tricycle loaded down with a mountain of sugarcane.
Sierra blinked. “Mr. Monroe, what’s with all the sugarcane?”
Thomas, still pedaling his tricycle, looked at Sierra like he’d been suffering all night. “Pip bugged me nonstop yesterday evening. I couldn’t get a moment’s peace.
So, first thing this morning, as soon as the fruit shop opened, I went and bought it a mountain of sugarcane.”
Pip really was no different from a human kid. When he wanted something, especially a treat, he’d whine and fuss until he got it.
Thomas let out a long sigh, with dark, tired circles under his eyes as he hauled THE sugarcane toward the elephant enclosure.
‘Man,’ he thought to himself. ‘Guess this is how it feels to be a parent.’
