Chapter 100
Chapter 100
Sierra ended the call and picked another person to join the stream.
This time, it was a guy around fifty.
He had an orange cat too, but unlike the last one, his was a long-haired little tabby. Its fluffy tail swished behind it like a feather duster as it walked.
Right then, the cat was weaving around his feet, meowing up a storm.
He had a gentle look on his face as he picked up the cat and held it up to the camera.
He asked Sierra, “Hi, Sierra. I have a question. My cat eats a lot, but it’s still so skinny. Do you know why that is?”
He started listing off everything the cat ate in a day.
The chat was blowing up: [Wait, it eats a whole pound of cat food, half a chicken breast, plus veggies and fruit every day? With all that, how is it still so skinny?]
[Maybe it’s not getting enough vitamins?]
[Sierra’s not a vet. She’s just here to help people chat with their cats. If your cat’s sick, shouldn’t you go to the vet?]
The guy jumped in, sounding anxious, “I swear, I’ve already taken it to the vet, more than once! Every day when I get home. from work, its bowl is licked clean.
“The vet ran every test, and they say it’s fine, but it just won’t gain any weight. If this keeps up, it’s gonna waste away.
“The vet said it’s right on the edge of malnutrition. I’m doing this live stream because I’m hoping Sierra can help me out. Maybe talk to it, and see if it’s feeling off. If it is, I can go straight to the vet with it.” |
Sierra glanced at the cat. It wasn’t exactly frail, but these cats were usually pretty big and solid. Right now, with the guy holding it up to the camera, it looked long and skinny, definitely not in the best shape.
The cat seemed to sense the guy’s worry and let out a soft meow.
“Don’t worry about me,” it said. “I’m lucky enough to have a nice house to live in, but my brothers and sisters are still out there, going hungry.
“I can handle being a little hungry, but if they don’t get anything to eat, they might not make it.”
After that, it meowed again, “When are we gonna eat? I’m starving!”
Sierra took a second to think about what the cat said.
She said, “Do you have another room? Can you put the cat in there and top off her food bowl? I’ve got something I want to talk to you about.”
As she spoke, Sierra glanced at the cat and said with a hint of mischief, “We might be here for a while.”
The guy gave Sierra a confused look, glanced at the cat, then refilled its bowl and took it to its own room.
Once the door was shut, Sierra asked, “Did you pick up the cat as a stray?”
The guy nodded. “Yeah, I’m a construction worker. I rescued it from the job site.”
From the metal shack in the background of his stream, it was obvious to Sierra that he was renting a place near the

construction site.

Sierra said, “It isn’t actually starving. It has been holding back on eating because she’s worried about her brothers and sisters out there.”
“Brothers and sisters?” The guy was stunned for a moment and then shook his head. “To be honest, when I found it, its mom and siblings were there too, but they had already passed away.”
The guy let out a heavy sigh as he recalled the scene. “Construction sites are rough places. You meet all kinds of people. When I found the cat, it must’ve been so scared that it fell into a pipe.
“That probably saved her, since some workers would bully stray cats. I just couldn’t leave it there, so I rescued it.”
The chat was blowing up: [Wait, so the cat’s siblings were actually killed by the workers? Did the poor creature really have to see all that happen?]
[God, it still trusts humans after all that? That’s honestly amazing.]
[Man, you are really a good guy.]
[We always thought construction workers were all honest folks, but that’s just a vibe, not a fact. No need to judge a whole group by a stereotype.]
[Totally agree. Ten years ago, when I was about to start college, I went to a construction site to tie rebar for the first time.
[The old-timers there were really tough on me. They saw I was clueless and stuck me at the bottom, while they rushed to finish the top floors.
[In the end, it was the foreman who realized someone was missing and searched everywhere to find me. After that, no matter how broke I got, I swore I’d never go back to a construction site.]
[A lot of workers are cruel. They just want to vent their bad feelings for the world to stray cats and dogs.]
The chat was full of stories about the hidden rules and tough experiences people had on construction sites.
Sierra nodded in agreement. “Everyone’s right. People are complicated, and no job is all good or all bad. We shouldn’t put anyone on a pedestal just because of their profession.”
As she spoke, Sierra glanced at the guy and curved her lips in a knowing smile. “You can bring your cat out now.”
The guy was confused. “I thought you said we’d be a while?”
Even so, he headed over to open the door to the cat’s room.
But when he opened the door, the cat food and chicken breast that had been on the floor had vanished, and the cat was nowhere in sight.
The windowsill was wide open, with just a few pieces of cat food scattered on it.
The guy’s mind flashed back to what Sierra had said. “No way. Could it be?”
Sierra said, “It probably hasn’t gone far. Go see if you can catch up with it.”
The cat was wobbling along, struggling to carry the food bowl as it made its way out.
The guy noticed cat food dropped here and there along the path and followed the trail, finally stopping at the entrance to a construction site.
Just then, a guy in his thirties walked up to him and said. “Hey Martin, you looking for your cat? I just saw it carrying a bowl

and heading into the site.”
Martin was well-liked around the construction site, and everyone knew he was a total cat dad. Even though he busted his back every day, he still shelled out so many bucks on cat food just for the cat.
So, everyone on site recognized his cat. Even if some folks had their eyes on it, they wouldn’t dare make a move. After all, it was Martin’s cat.
When Martin heard his cat was inside the site, he was pretty much convinced by what Sierra had said.
“Does my cat come here a lot?” Martin asked.
“All the time! You didn’t know? We see it running in here with its bowl all the time. It eats and then heads back home, the guy replied.
Martin put two and two together.
‘So, the cat has been sneaking out, trying to keep it a secret from me!’ Martin thought.
Martin just had to laugh. After getting directions from his coworker, he made his way into the construction site.
The building in front of him had already risen dozens of stories, almost finished and ready to be capped off.
Following the directions, Martin headed up to the second floor. Before he could spot his cat, he heard a few faint meows echoing through the bare concrete of the unfinished building.
After searching around for a bit, Martin finally found the source. Tucked away in some old scrap woods were two ridiculously cute long-haired kittens.
His cat’s food bowl was set right in front of the little ones, while it lay quietly nearby, its tail flicking back and forth as it kept a careful lookout for anyone approaching.
It was keeping watch until it suddenly spotted Martin.
The cat was surprised to see him.
The chat was blowing up: [Whoa, Sierra’s got magic!]
[Kitty helping out other kittens? It’s just too cute!]
[The cat looks so surprised to see the guy!]
[Those kittens are adorable, too!]
The cat looked up at Martin, its eyes full of shock and a little fear.
It remembered Martin said he wouldn’t open the door for a while. It wondered how he got here so fast.
It meowed, nervous and unsure as it hurried over, rubbing its head against Martin’s leg over and over, its voice soft and careful. “I’m sorry, please don’t be mad at me, okay?
“They’re my siblings, and they’re really struggling. I can eat less and share my food with them, is that alright?”
Martin could tell it was acting all cute, so he couldn’t help but ask, “Sierra, what’s it saying?”
Sierra replied, “It is just worried you’ll be upset, so it is being extra sweet with you. It says it is okay with eating less, as long as you let it keep sharing its food with its little siblings.”
Martin couldn’t help getting teary-eyed as he listened.

He picked his cat up, bringing his rough, tanned face close to the cat, and said softly, “How could I ever be mad at you? If I’d known you were sharing your food with those other kittens, I would’ve taken them all home with you.”
Far from home, he always felt that ache of loneliness.
But ever since he took in the cat, just knowing a soft, furry friend was waiting for him at home kept him going. Even the long, lonely hours felt a little happier.
And if he could bring home more kittens, that would mean even more joy.
Martin scooped up all three cats and brought them home together.
The chat was flooded with happy tears. Everyone was totally touched.
[Aww, sometimes the world really does feel warm and wholesome.]
[The little ones got adopted, too! Now the cat has a loving owner and its own little family.]
[Wait, isn’t that kind of odd? Didn’t the guy say all of the cat’s siblings were gone? These two look like they’re just a few months old. They’re way smaller than his cat.]
[Maybe it just decided they’re her siblings!]
Sierra went quiet for a moment, deep in thought as she stared at that comment.
Suddenly, another message popped up in the chat.
It said: [Does it really matter whose siblings they are?]
