Sierra stared at the slightly chubby woman, saying nothing. For a moment, it was as if someone had hit the mute button, and the whole place went eerily quiet.
After a long pause, Alex, sitting in the corner, finally spoke up. “Ms., the stray cats and dogs we’ve rescued before were out of necessity. If everyone did what you’re doing, it would put a lot of pressure on us.”
The woman’s face fell, panic flickering in her eyes.
“I can cover all its living expenses, and if it gets sick, I’ll pay for that too. I just want the zoo to give it a safe place to stay,” she pleaded.
As she finished speaking, she lowered her head, tears streaming down her face.
She knew stalking Sierra was wrong, but she was truly at her wits’ end, with nowhere else to turn.
She wiped her tears and said, “I even tried leaving my dog with a friend, but it kept running back home.
“Later, I tried finding someone to adopt it, but it ran over 180 miles and still managed to find its way back. Its paws were raw and bleeding.
“I know so many animals are drawn to you, Ms. Sterling. I really have no other choice. My only option is to bring my dog to you.”
The woman was getting desperate. Even though Sierra hadn’t said a word, she kept rattling off all of the dog’s good qualities, barely pausing for breath.
“My dog’s name is Lucky. It’s really well-behaved. It doesn’t even need walks or much attention. Just put its meals in front of it, and it’ll eat on its own.
“All I’m asking is for it to have a roof over its head, somewhere safe from the wind and rain,” she pleaded.
‘And maybe if it stays far away from me, it’ll be better for it, the woman thought, her heart heavy. She lowered her gaze, and her eyes clouded with sorrow.
Lucky stuck its tongue out, looking at its owner with those big, innocent eyes. It let out a soft whine, looking absolutely adorable.
But to Sierra, she heard Lucky was saying, “Hey, she’s trying to send me away again. Nice try! I’m way too clever for that.
“Every time she puts me in the car, I just keep my eyes on the road, and when the moment’s right, I find my way back home. I’m not going anywhere without her!’
Sierra couldn’t help but fall into deep thought after hearing that.
Lucky’s owner was always trying to send it away, but Lucky never once blamed her.
At that moment, Sierra heard Lucky chime in, “If I leave, who’s gonna look out for my human? I promised her when I was just a pup that I’d stick by her side forever!”
Suddenly, a kid started crying at the restaurant entrance before Sierra could even get a word out.
No one had time to react before the woman’s face drained of color. She spun around, her body stiff with fear.
Lucky, who’d been looking all cute and happy just a moment ago, suddenly twisted its face into a snarl. It dropped low to the floor, muscles coiled, ready to pounce, and let out a terrifying growl.

Chapter 103
At the door, a big guy was yanking a little girl, maybe seven or eight, by her hair, roughly dragging her inside.
Sierra and the others shot to their feet in an instant.
If it had been an adult person the guy was dragging, they might’ve just watched and waited to see what happened
But it was a kid. The guy was rough, and with just a little force, he yanked out a huge chunk of her hair. The little girl screamed in agony, her cries tearing through the air.
The guy, clearly fed up, didn’t hesitate to slap the girl hard across the face.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Voices erupted in unison all around.
The woman who’d been desperate just moments ago was now the angriest of all. She marched right up, her face full of rage. “Soren Young, what the hell are you doing? If you have a problem, come to me! Why are you hitting a kid?”
Without hesitation, she slapped him hard across the face.
Soren’s head snapped to the side from the slap. He looked at her. She was shouting, but everyone could see she was scared. shaking all over, and he just sneered.
Soren jabbed a finger at Lucky, who was still growling on the floor. “Jane, you still trying to dump this mutt? I’m warning you. Today, I’m gonna put this damn dog down for good!”
Jane, who’d looked terrified just moments ago, suddenly twisted her face into a snarl. “Go ahead, try it! If you hurt Lucky or my daughter again, I’ll make sure we both go down together. Nobody’s walking out of here alive!”
“You?” Soren scoffed, not bothered at all by her threats. “How many times have you run your mouth like that? All you ever do is talk tough, Jane.
“You’re mine, alive or dead. Hand over the dog right now, and maybe I won’t lay a hand on you today.”
Jane was shaking all over, and it was impossible to tell if it was from anger or fear.
Lucky watched helplessly as the little girl was trapped in Soren’s grip, while Jane looked like she was on the verge of a complete breakdown.
Out of nowhere, Lucky darted forward and bit down hard on Soren’s leg.
It all clicked for Sierra. This guy was a textbook abuser, and Lucky was only hated because it tried to protect its family.
Amid the chaos, Sierra shot Sophie a look.
Sophie didn’t hesitate. She snatched the little girl out of Soren’s grip and shielded her behind the group.
The little girl’s eyes were wide with terror, so scared that she couldn’t even cry anymore.
Sierra glanced back at the girl, her chest tightening with a sudden pang of sadness.
The next second, the little girl’s world went dark as a pair of cool hands gently covered her eyes.
A gentle, soothing voice sounded in her ear, “If you’re scared, don’t look. I’m here to help you, okay?”
Her eyelashes fluttered. Her whole body hurt, but right now, she felt an unusual sense of safety.
She said in a shaky voice, “Okay.”
Seeing this, Sierra finally lowered her hands.

Chapter 103
She glanced at Soren and then turned to Ethan. “Call the police.”
Soren hadn’t expected anyone to butt in, but when he saw it was a gorgeous woman speaking up, he paused for a second before sneering. “Even if God himself showed up, it wouldn’t matter!
“It’s my house, my rules. I can deal with my wife and that damn mutt however I want. Even the cops would be on my side.”
Jane gritted her teeth so hard that it hurt. “Soren, you’re a monster!”
Lucky planted itself firmly between them, its white fur streaked with Soren’s blood.
It was a far cry from the gentle pup it had been moments ago. Its hackles were raised, every muscle taut, ready to tear into Soren if he dared take another step.
Soren’s bravado faltered.
Still, he kept running his mouth. “Jane, don’t think that mutt makes you untouchable. As long as you’re mine, I’ll beat you whenever I damn well please. And one day, I’ll make sure that filthy beast is dead and gone!”
He thought, ‘Whenever I lay a hand on Jane, that damn mutt would go berserk, sinking its teeth in until I left bleeding all over. Last time, it had almost bitten my ear clean off!’
After Soren threatened to kill Lucky, Jane scrambled to send it away, but they were just too close. Every time she tried, Lucky would always find its way back home.
Whenever Soren started beating Jane, Lucky would go wild, risking its own life to protect her.
Thinking about all this, a nasty look flashed in Soren’s eyes, and he suddenly aimed a vicious kick at Lucky.
