Chapter 154
‘A bear?’ Sierra thought.
She beat Flora to the punch, reacting even faster.

She came out of the kitchen, her eyes watering from the smoke, but she stared straight at the man who brought the news. “Did you just say there’s a bear nearby?”
The man saw Sierra and nodded, still looking a bit stunned.
Flora realized what was happening and immediately started crying.
The man said, “Flora, don’t cry. You need to head to the village entrance and check on Kyson.”
Flora hurried after the man.
Sierra suddenly remembered something and rushed back inside. She pulled out all the firewood Elliot had put in the stove and quickly doused the flames with a ladle of water before they could flare up.
“Elliot, hold off on the fire. Let’s go see what’s going on,” she said.
With that, she and Sophie hurried outside.
Elliot, realizing what was happening, quickly caught up with them.
By the time the three of them got there, the police, the wildlife rescue team, and a crowd of villagers were already gathered at the entrance to the village.
Agonized screams echoed from the crowd.
Ethan spotted Sierra and Sophie, both smeared with soot, and stood there in shock for a moment before quickly stepping aside to let them through.
Sierra glanced at the man lying on the stretcher, howling in pain. His left leg was mangled, and his foot was completely
gone.
“What exactly happened?” Sierra asked.
Ethan replied, “I heard he ran into a bear while gathering firewood up in the mountains. The bear mauled him and tore off his leg. Luckily, some villagers managed to drag him away. But-”
Before he could finish, Flora’s heart-wrenching sobs cut him off.
Hank stood off to the side and just let out a heavy sigh, looking helpless.
He looked at the cops. “We’re out here in the middle of nowhere. Who knows if an ambulance can even get here? Can you guys please take Kyson to the county? If you don’t, he’s not gonna make it.”
Even though the bear didn’t hit any big arteries, he’s still losing a ton of blood.
Another villager spoke up. “Kyson’s dad got killed by a bear, too. If Kyson dies, Flora’s gonna be left all by herself.”
“Yeah, officer, please get him down to town. If you don’t, this kid’s got no chance,” another villager begged.
Dalton didn’t say a word.
But with things this urgent, he knew he had to get Kyson to the hospital right away.

Chapter 154
Luckily, the village had snow chains. Dalton didn’t hesitate. He jumped behind the wheel and drove Kyson to the hospital himself.
Flora and Darius went along too. As soon as Darius heard he could finally get treated down the mountain, he started bawling his eyes out.
After everyone left, Sierra lingered at the village entrance, lost in thought and silent.
Elliot saw the heavy look on her face and couldn’t help but ask, “Hey, Sierra, what’s on your mind?”
Sierra was startled by his voice, then quickly shook her head. “It’s nothing. Let’s just head back and make dinner.”
After a moment, Sierra said, “Let me take care of the fire, Elliot. You don’t need to mess with it.”
‘Better not let Flora come back and find the house burned to the ground, Sierra thought to herself.
Elliot had wanted to impress Sierra, so he volunteered to start the fire. But he didn’t even get a flame going; instead, the room was soon choked with thick smoke.
Elliot rubbed his nose sheepishly, shooting a guilty look at Sierra, then at Sophie.
Finally, he nodded seriously. “Alright, guess I’ll just cook instead.”
Back in the kitchen, Sierra set the wet firewood she’d doused earlier under the eaves, then grabbed some dry logs. In no time, she had the fire going.
Elliot just stood there in silence for a moment.
He might not be any good at starting fires, but cooking was no problem for him.
Sierra finally got to eat some rice for the first time in two days.

In the middle of the night, Sierra and Sophie were sharing a bed, but Sierra just couldn’t sleep. She kept tossing and turning, wide awake, her mind racing.
Sophie asked, “Are you worried about Flora’s son?”
Sierra shook her head. “No, it’s just something feels off.”
Sophie sat up in bed and switched on the light, her eyes bright. “You think so too?”
Sierra hadn’t expected Sophie to be on the same page. She nodded. “Yeah, I heard the villagers say he went up the mountain to get firewood, but with all this snow, all the wood would be soaked, and they couldn’t burn it anyway.
“Plus, when I got back, there was already a big pile of dry firewood under the eaves.”
Worried Sophie might not get it, Sierra explained, “Sure, people in the countryside do gather firewood, but nobody would go out looking for it in the middle of a snowstorm or when it’s pouring rain.”
Sophie caught on. “So you think the villagers were lying today?”
“That’s what I think,” Sierra said.
Sierra glanced out the window at the snowflakes that were finally starting to let up. “Once the snow stops tomorrow, let’s head up the mountain and check things out.”
That night, Sierra got in touch with Ethan and the rest, who were crashing at other villagers’ places.
Chapter 154
Once they heard from her, Ethan and the crew started packing up their gear that very night.
Before heading out, they gave the cops a heads-up.

The cops looked uneasy. “Genova County’s crawling with bears. What if you run into one? We should tag along with you.”
Ethan recalled Sierra’s warning and told the cops exactly what she’d said.
Hearing that, the cops just sighed and said, “Alright, whatever happens, you all need to be back down the mountain before it gets dark today.”
By five in the morning, the snow had finally stopped, and the sun was already shining bright.
The winter sun felt nice and warm, so by the afternoon, the ice and snow would start to melt off. No rush to head out before then.
Ethan nodded. “We will.”
Sierra specifically told Ethan not to alert the villagers. Once the group gathered behind the village, the six of them headed up the mountain together.
Meanwhile, Elliot, who was built like an ox and could sleep through anything, had actually set an alarm for eight o’clock last night. He stumbled out of bed, still half-asleep.
Honestly, the only time he’d ever gotten up this early was back in college for those dreaded eight a.m. classes.
After washing up and getting dressed, he opened his door and saw Sierra’s door still shut tight. He figured she was probably still asleep and couldn’t help but feel a little smug.
He’d finally figured out how to start a fire yesterday, and today, he was determined to blow Sierra away with the perfect breakfast.
Elliot braved the chilly morning wind and tidied up the kitchen before getting started.
By ten o’clock, he had cooked up eight different dishes and oatmeal. He went upstairs and knocked on Sierra and Sophie’s
door.
“Sierra, Sophie, rise and shine. Breakfast is ready,” Elliot called out.
For a while, there was no sound from inside.
‘Guess they’re still out cold?’ Elliot thought to himself.
He hesitated, then knocked harder on the door. “Hey, Sierra, you awake yet?”
There was no response.
Elliot felt awkward about just barging in, so he pressed his ear against the door, trying to catch any sound from inside.
Just then, the door swung open.
But when he looked inside, the room was completely empty. The bed was perfectly made, covers stacked neatly. He reached out to feel the bed.
It was stone cold.
Elliot stood frozen in front of the bed, and it finally dawned on him.
‘Sierra ditched me,’ he thought, his heart plummeting to the floor.
