Chapter 155
Chapter 155
At that moment, Sierra, who was already halfway up the mountain, let out a loud sneeze.
Everyone on the team turned to look at her right away.
Mark, who was closest to Sierra, handed her a tissue. “Sierra, are you alright?”
Sierra felt her nose getting a little runny. ‘Must be the chilly weather making me catch a cold,’ she thought.
Sierra took the tissue and shook her head. “I think I’m catching a cold, but it’s nothing serious.”
“That’s good to hear,” Alex said. “Make sure to take some cold medicine when we get back.”

Timothy chimed in, “Maybe we should swing by the temple when we get back. I feel like you’ve been jinxed lately, Sierra. That sneeze was probably someone badmouthing you.”
Timothy declared, “It must be Natalie.”
Right as Timothy finished talking, a savage animal’s roar suddenly ripped through the forest.
“Damn, did you guys hear that? Was that a bear?” Timothy felt a chill run down his spine.
He’d seen plenty of bears back when he was in Coliburg.
Bears were seriously ruthless. They would attack people out of nowhere, mess with one for a while, and then tear one apart and eat one.
Back when he was working in Coliburg, he ran into a Kham Bear that was at least 6 feet tall. Its shaggy fur covered some seriously strong limbs, and when it roared, he swore the ground shook.
“Good thing Eeef and I ran fast last time, or we’d have been nothing but bones left, Timothy said, shivering at the memory.
From the sound of it, that bear was practically right on top of us.
Timothy edged behind Ethan, eyes darting around warily.
Sierra’s nerves went on high alert. That roar wasn’t random. It was a warning, and from a mama bear, no less.
Sierra glanced around and spotted bear claw marks gouged into every tree trunk nearby.
From the depth and size of those marks, this mama bear had to be over 6 feet tall. None of us stood a chance against her.
“Bears leave claw marks on trees to mark their territory. We’re right in the middle of hers, so everyone, stay sharp,” Sierra warned.
They hadn’t brought any tranquilizers with them on this trip.
Sierra kept her voice low. “If anything happens, we split up and run for it.”
Timothy nodded like a bobblehead. “No problem. I’ll be out of here so fast.”
They kept heading toward the noise, and the bear could tell we were getting closer. It was getting more and more worked up.
Roar after roar echoed through the woods.
Sierra could feel her heart pounding, her whole body tingling and burning with adrenaline.

Chapter 155
It wasn’t her first time dealing with big animals. Milo and Pip were legends among animals.
But those two were gentle giants, smart as can be.
But wild bears were a whole other beast. They were tough customers, not easy to deal with at all.
Wild bears had no natural enemies. They were the undisputed kings of the forest.
The rough roar echoed out from the hollow of an old, lightning-blasted tree.

Before anyone could react, an all-black mama bear with a ring of white fur around her neck suddenly burst out of the hollow.
She took a few steps, then reared up on her hind legs, looming over them like a mountain, intimidating as hell.
This was a massive black bear.
Most black bears stand around 6 feet tall, but this one had to be at least two and a half, an absolute giant.
“This is insane,’ Sierra thought.
Sierra stepped in front of the group, staring down the black bear that was warning them. “We’re not here to hurt you.”
But before she could finish, the bear lunged at them.
Her face changed instantly as she yelled, “Run.”
The wildlife rescue team instinctively spun around and bolted, all at once.
Alex was closest to the bear, and he bolted so fast he faceplanted right into the dirt.
The bear seized the chance, letting out a ground-shaking roar. Everyone instinctively froze for a split second.
“Alex,” they yelled.
Sierra and the wildlife rescue team spun around. They’d sworn not to look back, no matter what happened, but the instant Alex hit the ground, every single one of them broke that promise and sprinted straight toward him.
Timothy and Mark each grabbed a rock and threw it at the bear, trying to draw its attention.
As soon as the bear’s gaze landed on them, they both yelled at the top of their lungs.
Taking advantage of the distraction, Sophie and Ethan darted over to pull Alex to safety.
Once they’d put about 30 feet between themselves and the bear, the bear finally caught on. It threw its head back and roared so loud it shook the trees.
“Humans, you tricked me again.” The bear bellowed, its voice booming through the woods.
The bear snarled at Alex and his crew, then barreled right toward them.
Ethan whipped around, panic written all over his face. “Run.”
Alex knew his foot was messed up, and he couldn’t keep up. He was about to say, “Go on without me.”
But Sophie, fed up with how slow he was moving, just hoisted him up and bolted.
Alex was shocked.

Chapter 155
Seeing the humans trying to bolt, the bear went ballistic and charged straight at the three of them.
Sierra’s heart shot into her throat as she threw herself between the bear and her teammates.
“Sierra,” they yelled.

Mark and Timothy yelled together. Ethan spun around just in time to see the massive bear knock Sierra flat, its clear drool dripping onto her collar.
‘What the hell just happened?
‘Why is the bear going after Sierra? Did her animal affinity suddenly fail her?’ The thought flashed through all their minds, panic rising.
Pinned under the bear, Sierra’s heart skipped a beat in fear.
She knew better than to think her animal affinity was some kind of superpower. It just made it easier to communicate with wild animals, not make her invincible.
What really threw her off was the sheer hostility this bear had toward humans.
Sierra stared into the bear’s eyes and saw nothing but hatred for humans.
But the bear just roared with its mouth wide open, but didn’t lay a paw on her.
Sierra tilted her head, saw the team clutching rocks, ready to defend Ethan and the others, and shouted, “Everyone, don’t move. It’s not going to hurt me.”
The team, who’d been ready to go all out against the bear, let their rocks fall to the ground.
The bear glanced at them, then calmly looked away.
Then it got up and moved back, leaving about 9 feet between itself and Sierra.
“Human, your scent keeps me from attacking you. Leave now. Don’t come back to my turf,” the bear said.
With that, the bear turned and headed back to its den without a second glance.
Sophie set Alex down and rushed over to Sierra, checking her for injuries, her voice tense. “Sierra, I’m sorry. I couldn’t protect you.”
Alex limped over, looking ashamed. “I slowed everyone down.”
Once the bear was out of sight, Sierra shook her head. “Don’t apologize.
“We’ll talk about it when we get back,” she said.
