Chapter 158

Chapter 158

“Save the kid?” they thought.

After a few seconds of stunned silence, everyone snapped back to reality.

The reason the black bear hadn’t run off earlier was probably that it wanted Sierra to help protect its black bear cub, so it couldn’t risk exposing where the little one was hiding.

Instead of saying anything out loud, Sierra walked over to the tree whose trunk had been hollowed out by lightning, forming a natural den.

The tree was massive. Five grown adults would have to link arms just to wrap around it.

The wildlife rescue team stepped into the den and scanned the place, but it was empty except for some food the black bear had gathered; the black bear cub was nowhere to be seen.

Just as everyone was about to leave and search elsewhere, a faint whimper suddenly came from beneath a pile of fruit stacked in the corner.

Everyone instinctively turned to look.

Fruit and leaves rustled in the corner, and soon, a fluffy black bear cub with a patch of white fur on its chest timidly emerged, its bright eyes glistening as it looked at the group.

The little black bear cub was trembling all over, clearly terrified.

Even though it was shaking with fear, the little black bear cub still tried its hardest to growl and scare Sierra off.

Timothy snorted, “That’s a real wild animal for you. Even as a cub, it’s got that wild streak.

After saying that, Timothy grabbed a bottle of alcohol spray from the side of his backpack, spritzed his hands, and then walked over to lift the little cub by the scruff of its neck.

The black bear cub’s short legs kicked in the air, and its dark eyes seemed to spark with fire.

“You rotten humans, I won’t let you get away with this.

“Just wait till my mom comes back. She’ll eat you all alive,” it snapped.

With that, it squirmed and thrashed, desperately trying to break free.

Timothy grumbled about the cub being naughty, but he was actually worried about hurting it. Seeing how fiercely it struggled, he quickly said, “Alright, alright, I’ll let go of your neck, okay?”

With that, he set the black bear cub down on the ground.

As soon as its paws touched the earth, the black bear cub got even more aggressive and spun around, trying to bite Timothy.

Luckily, Sierra was right there and stopped it just in time. Otherwise, Timothy would’ve been bleeding for sure.

Timothy broke out in a cold sweat, then glared at the black bear cub, annoyed. “Seriously? We came here to help you, and you try to bite me? Ungrateful cub.”

The black bear cub shot back, just as defiant. Its eyes sparkled like stars-so bright it was almost intimidating.

It glared at the five humans with obvious disgust, lingering a moment longer on Sierra, fighting the urge to get close to her

“You took my family, my mom, my brothers, and sisters. You made me lose so many loved ones, and now you actually expect me to thank you? Yeah, right.”

The black bear cub kept spouting threats, “Just wait. When I grow up, I’ll come down the mountain and finish you all off.”

The cub wasn’t even as tall as their calves, but it stood up straight, talking big. In reality, its voice was trembling all over, buzzing like a beehive, and not a single word came out at the right pitch.

And except for Sierra, nobody else could understand a word it was saying. They just thought the little cub was being feisty and adorable at the same time.

Once the black bear cub had finished its rant, Sierra finally crouched down, her movements gentle and unthreatening.

The cub, mid-rant, just froze.

Faced with Sierra, who seemed to glow with a soft, calming light, the cub’s insults died on its lips. It just stared, wide-eyed, at Sierra’s kind smile.

“You humans are just the worst,” the black bear cub mumbled to itself. “How can you cheat like that?”

‘How was it supposed to keep yelling at someone who looked this nice?’ it wondered.

Sierra listened to the cub mumbling, and a small smile tugged at her lips, but remembering how the mother bear got caught, her smile faded away.

Once she was sure the cub wasn’t going to attack, she reached out and gently poked its round belly.

It was winter, and bears usually hibernated to save their strength. This little black bear was tiny. From what she knew about black bear cubs, it was probably less than two months old.

For it to be this chubby in the middle of winter, it must’ve been eating really well.

“Wow, you sure know how to throw shade for someone so little.” Sierra couldn’t resist poking the cub’s round belly again.

The little black bear cub wobbled and plopped down on its butt.

It gave Sierra a look of utter disbelief, cheeks burning with embarrassment.

Sierra continued softly, “Sweetie, we really mean you no harm. Have you gotten used to our scent? Yesterday, we accidentally wandered into your territory.”

At her words, the cub trotted right over and gave her a good sniff.

As soon as it caught that familiar scent, the cub’s eyes went wide with recognition. “It’s you guys.”

Black bears have an incredible sense of smell. They can detect every animal that sets foot in their territory.

These humans carried a scent unlike any other, soft and smooth like a veil of silk, irresistibly inviting to the cub.

But bears for hundreds of miles around had all been bullied by humans before, so even if their scent was comforting, none of them dared to trust humans again.

Thinking of this, the cub tilted its fuzzy head defiantly and snorted, “So what if it’s you? My mom told you to leave yesterday, and now you’re back again.”

“Yesterday, I saw your mom was hurt, so I came back to help you out,” Sierra said softly.

Noticing the cub was tough on the outside but soft on the inside, Sierra pretended to look hurt. “Your mom entrusted you to us, and now you want to bite us?”

With that, Sierra stood up, looking determined. “Forget it. If you don’t want us here, we’ll just leave.”

The rest of the wildlife rescue team could tell Sierra was just playing along with the cub, and they all exchanged knowing glances.

Without another word, they all turned to leave.

The black bear cub was totally stunned this time.

“Wait,” the cub yelled.

Sierra kept walking, heading straight for the entrance of the den.

“Don’t go,” the cub added.

Sierra didn’t even slow down.

The cub totally freaked out. It was just trying to throw a little tantrum and never thought Sierra would actually leave.

“Humans, don’t go. I was wrong, okay? Is it not enough that I admit I was wrong?” the cub wailed, its voice trembling with panic.

Black bear cubs can stand up for a short while, and in its panic, the little guy scrambled over to Sierra and wrapped its arms around her leg, clinging on for dear life.

Timothy almost burst out laughing.

But the cub was so panicked, it didn’t even notice.

It kept sniffling and sobbing, “Please don’t leave me here. I was wrong, I shouldn’t have talked to you like that. My attitude was all wrong. I’m sorry, I’m really sorry.”

Seeing the cub all meek and snuggly now, Sierra finally picked it up and cradled it in her arms.

The cub looked up at Sierra, bawling its eyes out like a little kid.

“Human, I really didn’t mean it. I thought you were just like those bad humans, here to steal our bear bile,” the cub cried, its voice shaking with fear.
