Chapter 157

“What?” Elliot exclaimed.

When he heard Sierra was heading back up the mountain, Elliot, who’d been sulking at the wall, whipped his head around. “Sierra, seriously, that bear’s way too dangerous.

“Why would you even think about going back up there? If you have to go, at least let me tag along next time.”

If that bear comes at us again, with my build, I could at least hold it off for a bit.

I’d probably be enough to keep that bear fed for days, Elliot thought.

Sierra glanced at Elliot and motioned for him to come over and sit down.

Elliot hadn’t expected Sierra to invite him, so he sat down right away next to Marcus.

But then he remembered how Marcus had pinched his arm and touched his back earlier, so he shuffled away from Marcus, looking totally grossed out.

The others just stared at him, speechless.

Marcus was left speechless, too.

Sierra looked back and forth between Marcus and Elliot before finally saying, “We really riled up that bear today, so there’s still a lot we don’t know.”

She brought out the black down jacket she’d changed out of and showed it to everyone.

Sophie’s expression instantly hardened as she stared at the dried, darkened bloodstains.

The bear hadn’t hurt Sierra at all. She’d only gotten a few scrapes from falling, so there’s no way all that blood came from

her.

Besides, there weren’t any tears or holes in the jacket.

“Is this the bear’s blood?” Sophie asked.

Sierra nodded. “That’s right. The bear was injured, but I think there’s another reason it was so on edge besides just being

hurt.”

The wildlife rescue team members instinctively recalled what had happened.

Normally, wild bears are lightning fast, but this one was moving sluggishly.

If they hadn’t kept getting closer to its territory, the bear probably wouldn’t have attacked them at all.

Looking back, the bear was really just defending itself.

Mark took a look at the bloodstains and did a quick estimate. “We were so busy trying to get away, we didn’t even notice this before. That bear’s lost quite a bit of blood.

“If it keeps bleeding like this, it could be in serious danger. We really do need to go back up

there.”

Marcus said, “So, what do you guys need? Dalton told me to do whatever I can to help.”

“Sorry to trouble you, Marcus,” Sierra said. “I’ve got a hunch this bear is somehow connected to the villager who broke his leg, but I’m not sure if the bear got hurt first and then attacked, or if they both got injured fighting each other.

“Now that the bear’s hurt someone, the villagers definitely won’t let it off the hook, but as wildlife rangers, we can’t just let a wild animal die. So, Marcus, please keep this quiet for now.”

The signal here was pretty unreliable, so Sierra wrote down everything they needed on a piece of paper. “Marcus, here’s our list. We’ll need it first thing tomorrow. And also, could you help us figure out a way to stay here a few more days?”

Marcus glanced at the list and didn’t hesitate.

“No problem, I’ve got this,” he said.

Marcus turned to Elliot.

Elliot narrowed his eyes at him. “What are you up to now? Are you plotting something against me?”

Marcus gave a sly grin. “Mr. Paterson, looks like you’re the only one who can pull this off.”

That same day, Elliot, the jewelry mogul, went to see Hank without giving away who he really was. He hinted there might be a mine hidden somewhere and said he’d have people come investigate, so they’d need to stick around for a few more days.

As soon as Hank heard about the sweet relocation offer, his eyes lit up like fireworks.

He raided his fridge for all the food he’d been saving, and threw together a feast for Elliot.

Elliot really knew how to sell a dream.

In no time, he had Hank wrapped around his finger, ready to tear down the whole village himself if it meant cashing in.

Meanwhile, Marcus showed up from the city with the equipment and the tranquilizer gun Sierra needed.

Early the next morning, the wildlife rescue team quietly made their way back up the mountain.

Thanks to yesterday’s experience, they reached the same spot in no time.

As soon as they stepped into the bear’s territory, they heard a heart-wrenching roar echoing from afar.

But it didn’t take long for everyone to realize something was off.

This time, the bear’s roar wasn’t a warning. It was frantic and desperate, like it was in agony.

Sierra’s expression turned serious, and she shot Ethan a look.

Ethan got the tranquilizer gun ready, and the team crouched low as they crept closer to the bear’s territory.

But soon, they witnessed a scene that left them all stunned.

Surrounding the bear were six or seven adult men. Some had guns, others held torches and tranquilizer guns.

Without exception, they were all attacking the bear.

The wildlife rescue team did their best to keep a low profile. Timothy glanced at the men and whispered, “That guy with the hunting rifle is the one who owns our place.

“Are they out here to get revenge for the villager who got hurt the other day?”

Before anyone could react, the bear suddenly exploded into action, ramming straight into the man with the rifle and sending him flying.

“Lance,” someone yelled.

When the villagers saw one of their own get hurt, their eyes went cold and murderous. “You filthy beast. We let you slip away last time, but this time, you’re not getting out of here.”

“Nico, shoot it with a tranquilizer,” another villager shouted.

As soon as he finished speaking, the tranquilizer dart hit the bear.

The bear realized it was doomed and, in a desperate burst of energy, staggered toward Sierra and her group.

Timothy whispered, “What do we do? The bear’s coming right at us. If we don’t move, those villagers are definitely going to spot us.”

With all that gear, these villagers aren’t just out for revenge. They’re here to hunt, plain and simple.

After sprinting a dozen feet, the bear suddenly caught sight of Sierra.

Everyone froze, expecting it to keep running, but the bear stopped dead in its tracks, fixing its gaze on Sierra.

It seemed conflicted, maybe even judging her.

The moment it paused, the villagers wasted no time and fired another tranquilizer dart into its side.

The bear suddenly crashed to the ground.

It tried to push itself up, but its body refused to respond.

Its eyelids grew heavier, and it felt like it was drifting away.

With the last bit of strength, the bear let out a feeble cry.

At last, its eyes slowly slid shut.

The villagers, grinning from ear to ear, lifted the bear into the big cage they’d set up, all smiles as they walked away, looking triumphant.

It wasn’t until the villagers were gone that Sierra and the others finally came out from behind the small hill.

Looking at the mess left behind from the fight, everyone looked seriously upset.

After a long silence, Alex broke the quiet. “That bear was it talking to you?”

Everyone turned to Sierra.

Thinking of the pleading in the bear’s eyes and what it had tried to say, Sierra gave a heavy nod, her voice choked with emotion. “That bear asked me to save her cubs,” she whispered.
