Chapter 163

Chapter 163

EX 55 vouche

During the New Year holiday, the zoo staff were taking turns off, and nobody expected tickets to be completely sold out on day one.

People online kept clamoring for more tickets, and fans even showed up outside the zoo from time to time, asking about extra tickets.

Sierra was worried that some people might try to climb over the fences, so she beefed up security.

Now, Payton was sporting a little black reflective vest, leading Ryan and the crew on daily patrols. To their surprise, they actually caught two weirdos trying to sneak into the zoo.

Time flew by, and before anyone realized, it was already New Year’s Eve.

Sophie kept inviting Sierra over day after day, and made sure the whole wildlife rescue team was included.

Mark’s parents had both passed away a few years back, and Ethan’s folks were serving in the military out on the border. It had been nearly ten years since they’d all been together for New Year’s.

Alex’s parents were murdered by Sebastian more than ten years ago.

The only one in the team with a happy, complete family was Timothy.

Timothy said, “It’s our wildlife rescue team’s very first year together. If none of you are heading home, why should I?

“Plus, the zoo reopens on the second day after New Year’s Eve. It’s a big deal, so of course I’m sticking around!”

Sophie said, “Then let’s all head over to my family’s place.”

Sierra felt a little uneasy about imposing on the Paterson family, but with Sophie inviting her day after day, and now that everyone else was going, she finally agreed with a nod.

Since she was going to the Paterson residence, she made sure to buy some festive gifts in advance.

On New Year’s Eve, Elliot and Leonard were in the kitchen themselves, cooking up a storm, while their dad stayed upstairs handling some work.

He figured he’d just come down for dinner, not wanting to make anyone feel uncomfortable.

Inside the villa, the kitchen was bustling with activity, while in the living room, the wildlife rescue team was busy playing card games.

Elliot would pop in from time to time to check on things.

Sierra couldn’t help but glance at Elliot’s apron. Maybe he’d felt embarrassed last time he cooked, because he’d ditched the weird apron and put on a more normal one today.

Underneath, he wore a simple, clean black shirt, paired with crisp, casual dress pants and gray cotton slippers. If people ignored his outrageously handsome face, no one would ever guess he was actually so playful and unpredictable in private.

The Paterson brothers finished preparing the New Year’s Eve feast in no time, and their dad came down from upstairs.

Everyone sat around the big square table, laughing and chatting under the warm glow of a chandelier.

Outside, snowflakes swirled through the air, ice crystals frosted the windows, and every so often, the smoky scent of fireworks wafted in from the neighborhood.

Just then, Elliot picked up a beautifully cut rib and gently placed it on Sierra’s plate, whispering, “Sierra, I chopped there myself. Eat up, okay?”

Sierra slowly looked up, meeting Elliot’s serious gaze. Then she noticed her plate was practically a moun

Elliot had kept adding food to her plate without her even realizing, and now there was so much piled up.

In that moment, Sierra felt like she was finally standing on solid ground. A weird calm settled over her.

It was as if someone had pulled her back from the edge of the world.

She could almost hear her own heartbeat.

now.

At the Sterling Residence, this year, the Sterling residence felt cold and empty.

The food on the table had long gone cold, and Sharon sat there, her frame so much slimmer than before.

Jonathan and Shawn each sat alone at opposite ends of the table.

As for Jimmy, ever since the chaos broke out at home, he hadn’t left the office at all. He just didn’t want to deal with any of it. And honestly, he really couldn’t.

Sharon was clearly unhappy about it.

She used to be the epitome of a gracious high-society lady, but now she was more like a resentful wife, finding fault with everything.

“Jonathan, did you buy the tickets I asked for?” Sharon asked.

Finally, in the tense atmosphere, Sharon was the first to speak. Her eyes, flat and emotionless, flickered for a moment as she looked straight at Jonathan.

Jonathan replied, “I had to pay a premium for some scalped tickets.”

After a pause, Jonathan glanced at Sharon, who’d been kind of losing it lately. He hesitated, and then said, “Mom, Sierra doesn’t want us showing up in front of her right now. If we just barge in, she’ll definitely be upset.”

Sharon said, “Of course I know that.”

Sharon’s eyes were full of sadness as she murmured, “I just want to see her from a distance. I never paid much attention to her when she used to come home, and now I just want to see where she works.”

Jonathan didn’t say a word.

Shawn just kept his mouth shut, too scared to say anything.

The atmosphere at home had been seriously weird lately.

Ever since Sierra got kidnapped by David, Sharon had started acting like she’d lost her mind.

And Shawn’d been losing fans left and right because of all the online backlash.

Just recently, a bunch of people in the industry accused him of lacking professionalism, and he even got roasted on social media, trending for all the wrong reasons.

And Sierra was the reason for all this mess.

Shawn thought he’d be furious, that he’d resent her, but every time he remembered what David and Elouise had done, he just felt so sick to his stomach that he couldn’t eat or sleep.

And then there were those dreams he’d been having lately. They’d started showing up almost every night now.

In those dreams, he did all kinds of messed-up things to Sierra, and even coldly watched as someone brutally stabbed her to death right in front of him, just standing there, emotionless.

But none of that ever really happened. He was Sierra’s brother, after all. He thought, ‘Even if things were rocky between us, how could I possibly witness her dying right before my eyes?’

And then there was Natalie. Ever since the whole switched-at-birth scandal came to light, she’d basically disappeared. No one could track her down. Now, Shawn didn’t even have anyone left to demand answers from.

Shawn was just about to say something to lighten the mood.

But just then, Sharon suddenly spoke up, “Jonathan, go take some food to Natalie. Don’t let her starve to death.”

Shawn gaped at his mom, stunned.

But Sharon didn’t even spare him a glance. Her eyes were locked on Jonathan.”

Then, Shawn watched as Jonathan just nodded calmly, picked up a plate of food, and headed upstairs.

Without thinking, Shawn followed him.

The sound of leather shoes on the wooden stairs filled the air. The room was warm, but as Shawn watched Jonathan heading that way, he felt a cold sweat breaking out all over his skin.

He thought, ‘Wait… That’s the same small room Sierra was locked in before!’
