Chapter 170

Chapter 170

Sierra ripped open the rest of the plastic bags.

Without exception, every single bag was stuffed with some kind of mystery feed, all packed with wood chips.

Sierra was shaking with rage, but she still snapped photos of all the evidence before rushing out of the warehouse without looking back.

Meanwhile, the female employee who had accompanied Sierra to the restroom sensed something was wrong when Sierra hadn’t come out after half an hour, so she hurried inside.

As she knocked on each stall door, she finally saw Sierra step out of one of the stalls.

The employee froze, staring at Sierra, suspicion flickering in her eyes.

Sierra raised an eyebrow. “Why are you looking at me like that? The line for the restroom was crazy today. Took before I could get in.”

The employee glanced at the long line outside and reluctantly let go of her suspicions.

The two of them quickly rejoined the others.

Richard and the female employee shared a look, and she gave him a nod. Once he saw that everything was okay, Richard finally let out a sigh of relief.

The group made their way from the flamingo section all the way to the elephant section.

As they walked, Sierra kept hearing the animals grumbling and complaining, but she kept her face calm, pretending she didn’t notice a thing. Inside, though, her mind was in turmoil.

Just as Sierra was lost in thought, a thunderous trumpet suddenly echoed from the elephant section.

In an instant, the crowd of tourists swarmed over, phones raised, eager to capture whatever was going down.

Sierra’s face darkened. She shot Sophie a look, and without bothering with Richard, the two of them quickly made their way to the elephant section.

The section was jam-packed with people, and Sierra could only watch from afar as seven or eight elephants ganged up on a scrawny female, shoving it toward the electric fence with their trunks and tusks.

Some of them were even pinning it down with their front legs, bullying it without mercy.

The poor female elephant was crouched low, its body curled up tight in fear, while the ground around it was a mess, all torn up from the chaos.

Richard strolled over to Sierra and shrugged. “The males are just in/rut right now. Give it a few days, and things will settle down.”

Sierra kept her face cold and didn’t say a word.

Sophie snapped, “That poor female elephant is totally getting bullied! Even if it’s mating season, how could any female handle so many males at once?”

Richard just grinned wider. “They’re wild animals, you know? This kind of thing happens in the wild, too. It’s pretty normal in zoos. Besides, look at it. It’s fine, isn’t it?”

But the moment Richard caught the blazing fire in Sierra’s eyes, his smile froze, and his words died in his throat.

Chapter 170

Sierra snapped, “You call that ‘fine’? There’s a huge power imbalance between the males and females, so why aren’t you keeping them in separate sections? Mr. Lane, you’re supposed to be an expert.

“You know how dangerous rutting males can get. If they can’t find a mate, they could even attack a rhino so viciously that it wouldn’t survive.

“And look at that poor female. It obviously wants nothing to do with them. So tell me, why aren’t you separating them?”

Before Richard could say anything, Sierra cut him off. “You’re a professional, and so are the zookeepers. If you want to explain, then show me the real evidence!”

After all these days, this was the first time Sierra had openly rebuked Richard.

That was right. She was straight-up scolding him.

Just thinking about what she’d seen in the warehouse half an hour ago, and now seeing the scars crisscrossing the female elephant’s body, its skin scraped and bleeding from the electric fence, Sierra had no patience left for Richard.

She said, “Just look at it. It might not even be fully grown! And you seriously thought it was okay to throw a bunch of males in with just one female?

“Is this what you call being professional? Fix this right now, or don’t make me escalate it to the authorities!”

Sierra gave Richard a chilling glare. “Mr. Lane, you probably know who I am. Trust me, I don’t need anyone’s permission to blow the whistle if I decide to report this.”

Richard looked from Sierra to Sophie, totally dumbfounded.

‘What the hell is happening?’ Richard’s mind spun, panic bubbling up inside him.

A wave of panic crashed over Richard. He opened his mouth, but couldn’t get a single word out.

But Sierra’s voice was so loud that the tourists nearby instinctively turned to look.

Someone in the crowd suddenly recognized Sierra and shouted her name, and in an instant, all eyes snapped to her.

Richard’s nerves were shot. He was even more panicked now.

It wasn’t a massive scandal, but now that it was blowing up in public like this, there was no way people wouldn’t start gossiping.

Richard instinctively tried to defuse the situation, lowering his voice to Sierra. “Ms. Sterling, the males are in rut right now.

“If we suddenly separate the female from the group, they’ll just get even more aggressive. And honestly, we don’t have anywhere else to put the female one right now…”

“So you’re just going to stand by and do nothing?” Sierra shot him a frosty glare. “I’m seriously starting to doubt the competence and credibility of everyone working in this zoo.”

With that, Sierra marched straight ahead.

The tourists saw her coming and quickly moved aside, making way for her.

Sierra found a staff member, gestured toward the iron gate, and ordered, “Open it.”

The staff member looked stunned, hesitating for a moment.

‘Is she really planning to go in there?’ He couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

Chapter 170

Not daring to make a call on his own, the staff member shot a helpless look at Richard, waiting for his orders.

Richard never saw this coming. Sierra was totally breaking the rules.

‘What does she think she’s doing? Those male elephants are in a frenzy right now. If she goes in there, she’ll get stomped flat!’ Richard’s thoughts spun out of control, panic flooding his mind.

“Ms. Sterling, we have our own rules here. If you keep being unreasonable, we can take this up with the police and see who’s really in the wrong!” Richard’s face was stormy as he spoke, his tone unyielding.

He went on, “There’s nothing wrong with how we run this zoo. If anyone needs to watch their behavior, it’s you.”

‘Is he really trying to threaten me?’ Sierra thought, her gaze turning steely.

Realizing his game, Sierra snorted in contempt.

But the next moment, her expression frosted over. “Fine, let’s settle this with the Wildlife Conservation Association. If you want to call the cops or drag me to court, I’m game.

“But if anything happens to that female elephant today, Harborty Zoo will be looking for a whole new staff!”

Richard’s face went stiff.

She wasn’t just bluffing. Sierra was dead serious, and everyone could tell she’d go through with it.

‘Who the hell is backing Sierra? What kind of connections does she have?’ Richard thought, his nerves shot.

The deafening trumpeting of the male elephants was pierced by the weak, pitiful cries of the female. Sierra’s expression turned downright grim as she snapped at the staff member by the elephant section, “Open the gate!”

The staff member shuddered, fear running through his whole body.

The cold look Sierra gave him made him reach for his keys without even thinking/

Sophie didn’t hesitate. She grabbed the keys and unlocked the gate in a flash.

Before Richard or anyone else could react, Sierra and Sophie rushed inside.
