Richard’s face was grim, but in his heart, he was secretly hoping Sierra would get stomped to death by the rampaging male elephant. If only Sierra and Sophie were out of the picture, the zoo’s secrets would never be in danger.
But the scene he’d pictured in his mind never happened.
The elephant section was huge, and the herd consisted of elephants, all massive in size. From afar, the visitors couldn’t really appreciate their true scale.
But when Sierra stood right in front of the male elephants, stick in hand, everyone finally understood just how gigantic one elephant could be.
Sierra’s height didn’t even reach the male elephant’s leg.
But even so, there wasn’t a trace of fear on Sierra’s face.
When Sierra burst out of the elephants’ resting house, no one knew where she got it from, but she was gripping a six-foot- long pole.
She marched straight up to the male elephant that was harassing the female, and without a second thought, whacked its leg with the pole.
Elephants’ skin was so thick and tough that unless someone really went at it, hitting them was nothing more than a tickle.
And right now, that was exactly what was happening.
The male elephant, in the middle of charging at the female with its head and tusks, suddenly felt a sharp sting in its leg, like it’d just been bitten by something.
Its small brown eyes drifted downward.
Standing there was a skinny human.
Right now, that skinny human seemed to be surrounded by a white-hot glow of anger, glaring fiercely up at it.
The male elephant, its mind clouded with rage, suddenly felt as if someone had dumped a bucket of ice water over it. It snapped to attention, its whole body stiffening.
The elephant let out a loud trumpet, echoing through the section.
“Who are you?” the male elephant demanded, its tone edged with suspicion.
Sierra didn’t say a word. She just kept striding forward, step by step, right toward the herd of male elephants.
If it had been anyone else, the whole herd of male elephants would’ve crushed a weak human underfoot without a second thought. But this time, things were different.
They wouldn’t even think about stepping on her.
With their tails tucked tight, the male elephants backed away in awkward little steps, their thick legs moving hesitantly.
For every step Sierra took forward, they retreated three steps.
Every time Sierra smacked them with the pole, the elephants instinctively cried out, “Please, stop! We were wrong!”
Sierra retorted, “You’re not sorry. You’re just scared out of your minds!”

She stared hard at the herd, knowing animals didn’t really do the whole bullying thing out in the wild. But here in the zoo, they had to play by some human rules now.
Piling on a scrawny female elephant like this was messed up.
Sierra didn’t even bother with these wimpy elephants. She snapped, “Get lost!”
The male elephants scrambled over to the side of the building, tails tucked between their legs. They lined up along the electric fence like a row of nervous schoolkids, ears drooping, just waiting to get chewed out.
Sierra didn’t even spare the male elephants a second glance.
She hurried back to check on the female elephant.
The female elephant was still stuck in the same pitiful pose from when it’d been bullied-its front legs half-kneeling on the ground, hind legs shaking like crazy, and its whole head nearly buried in the loose dirt.
As soon as Sierra reached out and touched it, the poor elephant shuddered from head to toe, scared out of its wits.
Richard rushed over just then.
He stared in disbelief at the male elephants lined up like nervous schoolkids, and then looked at the six-foot pole in Sierra’s hand.
‘Did Sierra really just manage to control eight male elephants with nothing but that stick?’ Richard thought, his mind reeling.
Richard walked over. Sierra was still trying to comfort the female elephant, but the poor thing was so terrified that nothing could get through to it. It just kept whimpering softly, its whole body trembling.
Sierra’s face was grim.
“Mr. Lane, is this what you call ‘no problems at the zoo’?” Sierra shot back, pointing at the female elephant, still curled up and motionless.
Her voice was blazing with anger. “Would it end up like this if it hadn’t been abused and bullied for so long?”
Richard was speechless, and the panic inside him only grew worse.
Richard finally gave in and admitted, “Our management was poor, but that’s just nature. Survival of the fittest…”
“Save your lectures,” Sierra cut him off sharply. “I’m going to report this to the authorities. And right now, I’m taking this female elephant back to WonderWild Zoo for proper care.”
“What?” Richard blurted out, stunned.
“Bongo is the private property of Harborty Zoo! Even if we messed up, we’ll deal with it ourselves. We don’t need some outsider barging in and telling us how to do our jobs!”
If Sierra took Bongo away, it would be a straight-up slap in the face for Harborty Zoo, right in front of the public and the Wildlife Conservation Association watching.
Once public outrage blew up, Harborty Zoo could kiss its business goodbye.
Richard turned to the security guards behind him and barked, “Get Ms. Sterling out of here!”
As soon as he finished speaking, two burly bodyguards flanked Sierra from both sides, closing in to grab her.
But before the bodyguards could even reach Sierra, they were knocked off their feet and sent crashing to the ground.

Bongo, who’d been frozen in fear, suddenly sprang to its feet the moment it sensed Sierra was in danger. It rammed the bodyguards with its head, sending them flying, and let out a fierce, trumpeting shriek.
Bongo’s legs were trembling. It was terrified.
But it understood everything. Just moments ago, it had watched Sierra march right up to the male elephants with nothing but that slender pole, chasing them off to protect it.
Sierra had gently stroked its wounds, and her voice was as gentle and comforting as dew on morning grass, making Bongo feel truly safe for once.
Bongo was so scared that it worried this was all just a dream, and if it so much as looked up, Sierra would vanish.
After all, it’d never met a human who was actually kind to it.
Especially Richard. He was the one who stuck it with eight male elephants and just let them push it around.
It’d heard the keepers say Richard did it all just so it’d have more calves.
But it didn’t want that. Not at all.
Now Richard was trying to mess with Sierra again. Even if this was all just a dream, there was no way Bongo would just sit back and let it happen.
Bongo threw everything it had info it. With its eyes squeezed shut, it barreled into the two bodyguards and sent them flying.
Then, with its long trunk, it wrapped it around Sierra’s shoulder and tucked her safely beneath its massive frame.
It roared.
Bongo fixed Richard with a fierce, threatening stare, making it clear that it wasn’t backing down.
“You’ve bullied me enough! Leave my savior alone!” Bongo trumpeted, its voice echoing with rage.
As Bongo spoke, it swung its trunk and landed a heavy smack right across Richard’s face, the sound echoing with a sharp
crack.
The world spun and went dark for Richard. He went down hard, landing in a dirt pit nearby.
As his mind faded, he could still catch the gasps and shouts from the crowd all around.
Richard went down hard, and several staff members scrambled over to help him back to his feet.
Richard shook off the dizziness, and his glare fixed on Bongo, who was suddenly raging out of control. His eyes went dark and vicious. “Somebody, she’s lost it! We can’t keep a rampaging elephant around. Put her down, now!”
Sierra, who was guarded by Bongo, stormed out and landed a slap right on Richard’s face, shutting him up instantly.
And Sophie didn’t hold back. She swung her stick and cracked Richard on the head.
His glasses shattered, exposing those sharp, scheming eyes.
In that moment, Richard’s true colors and ambition were on full display.
Richard glared at Sierra, his eyes burning with hatred.
Just then, both Sierra’s and Sophie’s phones buzzed with a message at the same time.
Sophie pulled out her phone, glanced at the screen, and said, “Sierra, they’re here.”

“Who’s here?” Richard groaned, still reeling from Sophie’s smack. His head was spinning, and he had no idea what she was talking about.
But it didn’t take long for him to figure it out.
Just then, Richard’s phone started ringing. It was his secretary calling.
His secretary said, “Mr. Lane, bad news! A ton of cops just stormed the zoo and went straight for the warehouse. We couldn’t move a thing before they got there!
“And Thomas Monroe from WonderWild Zoo just showed up, too, bringing another squad of police looking for you!”
