Chapter 188 The Trapped-Animal Experiments
Sierra’s eyes sparkled with determination.
Solomon didn’t really understand human emotions. It just couldn’t wrap its head around why some humans would hurt them, while others would lay down their lives to save them.
As far as it was concerned, staying alive was an achievement; it had never thought about justice.
However, Sierra’s eyes were so intense and pure that Solomon couldn’t take its eyes off her.
“Sierra, if I tell you, you’ll just end up feeling sad,” Solomon sighed. “Besides, it’s all over now. My dad, mom, sister, and brother are all dead. Justice can’t bring them back.”
It was perfectly content just roaming the plain every day. As a lion, it was pretty much at the top of the food chain. Whenever it got hungry, it would just grab a buffalo or antelope calf. That was more than enough for it.
However, Sierra wasn’t having it. She felt too much pain for them to accept it.
Sierra’s voice cracked. “Solomon, if we stay silent, these people will only grow more ruthless. More animals will face what you went through.
“I want to uncover everything Carlos has done, step by step, and crush every ounce of malice against wildlife at its root.” Solomon asked, “Is there any way you can help me get revenge for my family?”
Sierra replied, “I swear I’ll do everything in my power to utterly destroy Carlos and ensure he spends the rest of his life behind bars.”
Solomon was lost in thought for a long while. At last, with a flick of its tail, it strode back to the old tree that marked its territory.
As it settled down, memories began to flood its mind.
Suddenly, Solomon looked at Sierra and asked, “My human wife, you know I’d never hurt you, and none of the animals out here would either. Do you get why those cheetahs and lions attacked you that day?”
Before Sierra could say anything, Solomon continued, “Have you heard of something called the trapped-animal experiments?”
A shiver ran through Sierra’s spine, yet she still translated Solomon’s words to the others.
Solomon said, “Carlos is a total lunatic. He loves experiments, and he did that on Sarah and Bonnie. To see if animals could develop higher-level thought, he would go to great lengths to set spotted hyenas and cheetahs against each other.
“Of course, that was just the most basic part of it. When I was young, I wasn’t a stray. My father was the lion king, with far more territory than I.
“I remember my mom being very gentle, licking my fur to keep me clean until Carlos showed up. He captured countless wild animals to make them fight each other. If they refused, he used all sorts of tools to torture us.
“My father killed many of his own kind to protect us, but in the end, Carlos wanted him to kill my mother and me.”
Hearing that, Sierra could already picture the scene.
It was like a fight among animals; winning didn’t bring rewards, just survival.
Sierra’s voice quivered. “And then?”
Solomon said, “My father refused to harm us, so he starved himself. Then the humans beat him, breaking his spine, and he eventually starved to death.
“After that, Carlos went even crazier. He began testing the loyalty of lions. He locked us in a dark room for a very long time, hoping we would consume our father’s dead body.
“My mother refused. She and my siblings starved to death, and I was still very small. I survived only by drinking her milk.”
Solomon’s memories of his childhood had already begun to blur
Solomon saw that Sierra looked even more heartbroken than it was, and it got flustered. “Sierra, did I make you upset by telling you all this?”
“No,” Sierra replied, pulling herself together as she met Solomon’s eyes.
She thought, ‘It looks so innocent, just like Payton back home. Behind those innocent eyes was a story of unimaginable pain and suffering.

Sierra’s voice was soft, full of concern as she a. krt. Trogutal your back to the plain?”
“It was a human kid who brought me back to the wild. He even gave me my name,” Solomon explained. “When Carlos’s

experiment failed, he took out his anger on me.
“Luckily, he only put me among lions about my size to fight. I copied my dad and bit them. Fighting meant getting hurt, so I’ d give up at first, but later I found it didn’t help. After being beaten, I would have to fight again.”
Sierra asked, “So, is it because of all that trauma that you barely ever go hunting now?”
Solomon shrugged. “I suppose. I get dizzy at the sight of blood, but I think I’m smart. I’m the only lion in the world who treats a tree as home. Don’t you think I’m clever?”
Sierra’s mouth twitched.
Solomon meant that its behavior was no less than a monkey evolving, learning to use stones as tools.
Sierra had been feeling pretty down, but after hearing Solomon’s joke, her feelings got complicated. She just chuckled and didn’t say anything.
Solomon didn’t get the praise it was hoping for, so it just sighed, a little disappointed.
It added, “I was stuck there for ages, taking down every lion they threw at me until there was no one left to fight. Carlos saw that I wasn’t going crazy like the others, so he ended up shipping me off fo the circus.”
Sierra asked, “Are you saying that Carlos would drive wild animals into a frenzy, make them tear each other apart, and then use other methods to bend them to his will?”
Solomon nodded. “Pretty much. Every time, I saw someone waving things in front of us. It made my head spin, and eventually, I’d just fall asleep.”
Sierra thought, ‘Solomon probably means hypnosis. The trapped-animal experiments made animals fight each other and hypnotized them when they were weakest. Carlos is a total psycho.
‘Solomon is remarkable. Judging by its tone, it was likely often hypnotized, yet it remained completely unaffected.’
“Did you meet that boy at the circus?” Sierra asked.
“Yeah, that’s right. Carlos saw that I wouldn’t listen to him, so he just dumped me at the circus,” Solomon replied.
By that time, Solomon was all grown up, and its memories of those hellish circus days were way sharper than the blurry ones from its childhood. Just thinking about it made it shake its head, its gaze haunted by fear.
It said, “The circus people always beat me. Even when I cried secretly at night, I’d be punished. They had no sympathy at all.
“However, there was a handicapped boy at the circus who loved to play with me. At first, I found him annoying, thinking he was just like any other human, but he would secretly bring me meat.
“Even if he was caught the next day, he stayed loyal, took the punishment himself, and never gave me away. Later, I realized he considered me a friend. How sad would it be if I refused his kindness? Therefore, I started taking care of him.
“Once, I misjumped through the flaming hoop, and the fire scorched my rear. The humans thought I would attack, and I got whipped again.”
