Beast Tamer's Rebirth National Treasure Edition novel Chapter 199

Chapter 199 Lion King Dad

Sharon looked at her son in a daze, her chin trembling ever so slightly.

‘Of course, I knew what Shawn was getting at, Sharon thought to herself. ‘Knowing is one thing, but actually facing it is something else entirely.’

“But Sierra is my daughter, the one I carried for nine whole months. I just want us all to be happy together, like it used to be with Natalie. And-” Sharon’s voice shook as she spoke.

Suddenly, those dreams she’d been having came rushing back, making her feel like her heart was being squeezed so tight she could barely breathe.

‘I can’t let those dreams become reality,’ Sharon thought desperately.

“Shawn, can you help me figure out how I can talk to Sierra more?” Sharon asked, her voice full of worry.

No matter what they talked about, it always came back to this same problem.

Shawn was totally stumped.

He looked like someone had let all the air out of him, completely deflated.

Shawn raked his wild bedhead in defeat before finally saying, “There’s a city spotlight interview coming up, and WonderWild Zoo was chosen.

“Since you used to be a reporter, I can arrange for you to interview Sierra. But Mom, just stick to the interview questions, okay? Don’t bring up anything else.”

Sharon’s eyes lit up instantly, and she nodded. “I-I will.”

As long as she could see Sierra and have a real conversation with her, that would be enough.

The live stream audio was always distorted, and it had been so long since she’d heard Sharon’s voice face-to-face.

At WonderWild Zoo, in the staff dormitory, Payton was sitting obediently next to Sierra.

Solomon had been wanting to check out Sierra’s dorm for some time now, so after work, Sierra indulged it and let it visit her

after wo room. Now it was sitting up straight, just like Payton. rogm.

Payton was feeling a bit miffed.

There were just too many dogs hanging around outside Sierra’s place lately, and it was making Payton feel pretty insecure. So the moment Sierra walked into the kitchen, Payton bared its teeth and warned, “Solomon, I’m Sierra’s favorite. If you even think about messing with my spot, trust me, the dogs around here won’t let you have a good time at the zoo!” Solomon gave Payton a solemn look and blinked, “You have my word, Payton! I won’t.”

Seeing how cooperative Solomon was, Payton puffed up like a big shot. “From now on, you’re my sidekick. I know that the Lion King next door is no joke, and you’re kinda scrawny. If anyone gives you trouble, just tell them Payton’s got your back!” “Thanks, but I’m not your sidekick. You got my role all wrong,” Solomon said seriously.

Payton barked, “Hey, are you backing out on me now?”

Solomon blinked seriously. “Of course not. Sierra’s my wife, and you’re her dog son, so really, you should be calling me Dad.” Payton was left completely dumbfounded.

Then, it suddenly bared its teeth and chomped down on Solomon’s rear. “Damn mutt, who said Sierra’s your human wife? She’s mine! My one and only own!

“And

you think you can just show up and be my dad? Only a Huský can be my dad! Are you a Husky? Didn’t think so!” Solomon was tough as nails, but Payton still managed to sink its teeth in a few times.

Solomon considered biting back, but then it hit it that Payton was Sierra’s dog son. ‘If I actually hurt Payton,’ it wondered.’ Sierra would have my hide for sure.’

But then it thought, ‘Wait a minute, I’m the Lion King here! I’m supposed to be Payton’s dad! If people hear that I got bitten by my own dog son, everyone at the zoo will never let me live it down!’

So Solomon just opened its mouth wide and wrapned its laws around Payton’s head, not to hurt it, just to give it a good

scare.

But the second Solomon’s jaws touched it, Payton went sta dvaru, then flopped onto the couch and started howling its head off like it was dying.

“Sierra! Sierra, help! Solomon’s trying to eat a dog, me! It has lost its mind!” Payton howled. “Sierra, I’m scared

Solomon freaked out and instantly let go of Payton.

“Hey, hey, quit the howling! I swear, I wasn’t trying to eat you!” Solomon kept darting nervous glances between the kitchen and Payton.

It actually tried to clamp Payton’s mouth shut with its massive paw.

But that just made Payton howl even louder.

The best part was that Payton was howling right toward the kitchen where Sierra was, but those clever, scheming eyes of its were fixed on Solomon, looking all smug and satisfied.

After the panic faded, Solomon finally realized, ‘Damn, this mutt is totally doing this on purpose!’

“Seriously, Payton, why are you like this?” Solomon grumbled.

‘Unbelievable, it is actually trying to get me in trouble!’ Solomon thought, feeling totally betrayed.

Payton didn’t say a word; he just kept rolling his eyes and wailing, putting on the most dramatic show of misery you could imagine.

Finally, Sierra heard all the commotion and came out of the kitchen.

Payton immediately hopped off the couch, limping with an exaggerated swagger, his head drooping as he’d just survived the apocalypse.

‘Seriously, he’s no different from a zombie dog!’ Solomon thought to itself.

Solomon just stood there, thinking, ‘Man, these city types really know how to pull a fast one!’

Solomon’s mind just couldn’t keep up with Payton’s tricks. He looked like the honest guy who just got hustled, eyes full of shock and bewilderment:

Payton shot Solomon a smug, taunting look.

Then it barked, “Sierra, Solomon’s just a wild animal! Don’t let it hang around the house; just stick with me. I’m all you need! “Did you see that? It tried to bite my head off! If I hadn’t been so quick, you might’ve lost your favorite little guy forever!”

Sierra glanced back and forth between the dog and the lion, then couldn’t help but let out a helpless laugh at Payton’s dramatic performance.

Payton still had no idea Sierra could actually understand animal talk, so he took full advantage and bullied the other zoo animals as much as he liked, figuring no one could understand dog-speak anyway.

Now that Solomon was hanging around the house, Payton was acting all jealous and tattling on it just to get Sierra’s attention.

Solomon, that big old Lion King, was just standing there frozen, looking totally stunned and unable to believe what he was seeing.

Sierra wasn’t buying Payton’s act. She raised an eyebrow and teased, “Oh? Solomon bullied you, huh?”

Payton nodded twice, then gave Sierra a look that said it all. ‘It was totally Solomon who bullied me!’

Solomon finally came to its senses and rushed to plead its case. “Sierra, I swear, I didn’t do anything!”

Payton barked, “Yes, you did! You were totally about to bite my head off, weren’t you? Just admit it!”

“Yeah, I did,” Solomon confessed, but then it felt something was off. “But I swear, I wasn’t trying to eat you, I was just messing with you!”

“So, are you bullying me now?” Payton protested, sounding all aggrieved.

Feeling like it had the upper hand with Sierra standing right there, Payton figured this big guy wouldn’t dare do anything.

It stuck its neck out and challenged, “Now you’re trying to take advantage of me, calling me your son! Who do you think you are?”

Sierra and Solomon were both speechless.

Solomon couldn’t wrap its head around it. ‘Walt, Isn’t Payton supposed to be my kid? I mean, having a Lion King for a dad, shouldn’t any dog be over the moon about that?’

Sierra watched the two animals arguing nonstop and finally lost her patience. “Cut it out, you two!”

With that, she grabbed Payton’s ear and gave it a firm tug.

That feeling was way too familiar; whenever it messed up as a pup, Sierra would yank its ear just like this.

Payton’s body and mouth moved way faster than its brain. “Sierra, I’m sorry!”

It instantly slid down to the floor and bowed, putting on its best puppy-dog eyes.

Sierra wasn’t really pulling its ear. She let go as soon as Payton dropped to the floor. Payton immediately sprawled out, butt in the air, and started licking Sierra’s shoes with the most exaggerated puppy-dog act it could muster.

That goofy, over-the-top performance made all of Sierra’s anger just melt away.

“Payton, don’t think I didn’t hear you from the kitchen. You were totally provoking Solomon! If it really wanted to eat you, you wouldn’t even be standing here right now,” Sierra said, exasperated.

Solomon, off to the side, finally realized what was up.

It nodded like crazy. “Yeah, exactly! If I really wanted to go after Payton, he’d be history by now! Sierra, it’s our dog son who’s picking on me!”

Sierra wondered, ‘Honestly, you kind of had it coming, getting bullied like that.’

Every other word out of Solomon’s mouth was dog son. If Payton were any more dramatic, he’d probably just drop dead from pure indignation.

Sierra said, “Payton, Solomon, you two, park yourselves at opposite ends of the couch and watch some cartoons or TV. If I catch you fighting again, you’re both sleeping in the hallway tonight!”

Payton knew this routine all too well. It scrambled onto the couch and curled itself up into a tight little ball.

Payton looked up at Sierra with its best puppy eyes and said, “Sierra, see? I’m being good.”
