Beast Tamer's Rebirth National Treasure Edition novel Chapter 207

Chapter 207 Please Ride Mel

Emery was blown away.

He’d watched Sierra’s livestreams before and knew she could figure things out just by reading an animal’s eyes and body language.

Sierra could analyze the scene between pets and their owners and figure out what really happened.

That’s what Emery used to think.

But now, he wasn’t so sure anymore,

Especially that part when the little squirrel actually led them to find the missing person.

Sierra was clearly having a real conversation with the squirrel.

But Sierra was still focused on following the tiger’s tracks, so Emery couldn’t just bombard her with questions. His mind raced with a million questions, and the suspense drove him crazy.

Emery said, “Felix, don’t you think Sierra’s kind of weird? How does she get all these animals to be her loyal crew?

Felix shot Emery a look, rolling his eyes so hard that they almost got stuck. He shot back, “Loyal crew? Sierra treats animals so well, always gentle and kind. Not like you, who just kicked Rusty a minute ago.”

Rusty barked, “Totally! Emery just kicked me!”

Emery was fuming. He shot back, “Come on, Rusty, I barely even kicked you. Why are you whining?”

Rusty was a stray dog adopted by the Forestry Bureau. He was eight years old, and Emery had been working there for seven years. So Rusty considered itself Emery’s senior.

Every time Rusty looked at Emery, it was like he was treating Emery as the junior, which always made Emery want to smack him.

Seeing Emery about to smack him again, Rusty ran to Sierra.

Emery yelled, “Ungrateful! I’m the one who bought you that down jacket! It cost me 100 bucks!”

Felix just shook his head, looking totally exasperated. He said, “Enough already. Why are you arguing with a dog?

“When you first started here and got lost in the mountains, you didn’t even know how to mark a trail. Rusty was the one who sniffed you out and saved your butt.”

Emery grumbled, “I just think Rusty gets distracted by pretty faces and forgets his bros.”

Felix lowered his voice and said, “Come on, you know Rusty is a sucker for good-looking folks. And Ms. Sterling just has this way with animals. They’re all drawn to her. Just drop it.

“On the way here, I noticed Sierra just clicks with every animal she meets. And Sophie? She’s no animal expert. She doesn’t know the first thing about them. She’s actually a soldier, just here to keep Sierra safe.”

Emery stared at Felix, his eyes wide with shock.

Felix added, “I’m pretty sure Sierra can actually understand what these animals are saying. So just let it go, alright? Stop grilling her about it.”

Emery stammered, “W-What the…”

Felix just shrugged. He said, “There are all kinds of crazy stuff in this world.”

Felix had spent years out in the wild and seen plenty of strange things, so when it came to Sierra’s abilities, he just felt lucky to have her around.

Plus, Sierra became the zoo director while she was still so young; Felix figured the government had a hand in that.

Emery was just too thick-headed to get it.

Emery went quiet after that, but it was obvious he was way more impressed by Sierra now: walking along, he treated her with a whole new level of respect and awe.

The team of twelve kept following the white tiger’s tracks.

Halfway there, the weather took a turn. Snow started falling.

All around them were leafless trees, their branches covered in snow. Pretty soon, the tiger’s tracks would be buried.

If they lost the white tiger’s trail today, finding it again would be next to impossible.

Everyone hurried up.

The local rescue team members were quickly falling behind, panting, and some were even showing signs of altitude sickness.

This wasn’t going to work.

Sierra said, “The white tiger is important, but everyone’s lives matter too. Altitude sickness is no joke. We’ll mark the trail with cloth strips as we go. Once you’ve caught your breath, you can either follow us or head back down the mountain.”

After that, the rest of the team, aside from the wildlife rescue team, Emery, and Felix, struggled and had to stop to rest on the spot.

The snow kept coming down harder and harder, completely covering up the white tiger’s tracks.

All around them was just a sea of white. If they kept going, they could easily lose their way.

Timothy looked at everyone, a hint of worry in his voice. He asked, “What do we do now? If we don’t find the white tiger soon, it’ll be dark.”

Sierra glanced around. In Darkmoor, it got dark early this time of year, and visibility at night was almost zero. In just half an hour, it’d be completely dark.

She took a deep breath and said, “Let’s find a spot with a gentler slope to set up camp. We’ll head out again at first light to keep searching for the white tiger.”

Others nodded and replied, “Okay.”

They walked about 330 feet further and finally found a spot where they could settle down for the night.

Just as they were about to step forward, a rough voice shouted out, “Stop! Don’t step there!”

Sierra froze and quickly stopped everyone. She called out, “Wait, don’t go any further.”

She glanced around, and finally, next to a huge tree she couldn’t even identify, spotted a big, grayish animal, somewhere between a sheep and a cow, watching them closely.

The animal looked like a nervous wreck, its voice shaking. It said, “DP-please, don’t go over there! There’s a trap. You could fall right in!”

Sierra’s heart skipped a beat, cold sweat instantly breaking out on her forehead.

She picked up a rock and chucked it hard into the snow ahead. The snow gave way, revealing a huge pit right where she’d

thrown it.

The bottom was lined with vicious spikes and steel animal traps.

Sierra sized up the massive creature and instantly realized it was a takin, the infamous “killer king” of the Greenridge Mountains.

Takins always looked so honest and dopey, but despite being called a “cow,” they were actually more like goats.

With cow hooves, a bear’s back, and a long horse face that seemed to be smiling, it was a total mashup, like nature couldn’t decide what it wanted, so it just made a walking contradiction.

This takin was enormous, easily tipping the scales at over 880 pounds, but judging by its nervous vibe, it was basically a socially awkward giant.

As Sierra approached, the takin grew even more anxious, nervously gulping. It said, “I swear I’m telling the truth! About two weeks ago, a tigress fell into that trap. She got impaled by all those spikes and didn’t stand a chance.

“The male white tiger’s been stuck raising the cub alone ever since, but honestly, he looks pretty messed up, too. If you ask me, he’s barely hanging on.”

Sierra felt a chill run down her spine. She asked, “Is it a male white tiger with a busted leg, taking care of a cub?”

“Have you actually seen them?” the takin said, his voice honest and a little awkward. It asked, “Are you guys here to help thern out?”

Sierra nodded and said, “That’s right, we’re with the wildlife rescue team. As soon as we heard the white tiger was injured, we came here overnight.

“But now the snow’s buried all its tracks, and we’ve completely lost it. If you can, could you take us to where it is?” But the takin shook its head desperately, eyes wide with panic. It said, “I can’t! That white tiger is way too scary!” Sierra looked at this massive takin trembling all over, and for a moment, she was speechless.

The takin was infamous as the killer king of the Greenridge Mountains, not something one’d want to mess with.

But now, here it was, acting like a total scaredy-cat.

Sierra couldn’t help but roast it a little in her head, but she got where it was coming from. She said, “Just point me in the right direction. I’ll go check it out myself.”

The takin let out a huge sigh of relief when it realized Sierra wasn’t going to force it to go with her.

With Sierra being so pretty, it just couldn’t say no to her.

The takin said, “I’ll take you to the edge of the white tiger’s territory. But we can’t go any further. None of us are allowed in

there.”

Sierra gave a grateful nod and said, “Thanks, I really appreciate it.”

“Beautiful lady, hop on! I promise I’ll be super steady. You won’t fall, not even a wobble!” the takin said, gazing at Sierra with big, hopeful eyes.

It seriously wanted to be Sierra’s trusty steed!

Sierra said, “We’ve got a whole group here.”

She glanced back, nodding toward her teammates.

“That’s totally fine!” the takin said, not missing a beat.

The takin gave’a loud snort, and suddenly a cloud of white mist puffed out all around it.

Then, out of nowhere, about a dozen more takins, just as huge, came trotting out of the woods.

“If you let me be your ride, we can carry your whole crew, too!” the takin said, eyes shining with excitement.

At that point, Sierra really had no way to refuse. She turned to her teammates, gave them a quick heads-up, and signaled for everyone to get ready.

The wildlife rescue team had ridden elephants before, so climbing onto a takin wasn’t exactly a novelty. Still, it took some awkward scrambling and teamwork to get everyone up on those massive backs.

Emery and Felix shared a knowing glance, said nothing, then grabbed Rusty and hauled themselves up onto the takin together.

The takins raced up and down the mountain at blazing speed.

They handled steep slopes like it was nothing, always sure-footed and barely ever slipped or stumbled.

What would’ve taken half an hour on foot, the takins covered it in just five minutes

As soon as they got close to the white tiger’s territory, a deafening roar shook the air..

The takin carrying Sierra heard it and instantly collapsed to its knees, shaking all over. It let Sierra off its back and stammered, “S-Sierra, we’ll wait for you nearby. I’m outta here!”

With that, the whole herd of takins scrambled away, practically tripping over themselves in their rush to get out of there.
