Chapter 226 Testifying For The Dog

When Sierra’s voice cut through, the man immediately lost his nerve.

He stammered, “H-how could that be?”

Sierra gave Muddy a look, telling him to speak for himself.

Muddy stared at Sierra in shock.

He never thought Sierra would still trust him at a time like this. His tail, which had been tucked between his legs, suddenly wagged like a propeller, letting out two sharp barks at the man.

Muddy said, “Sierra, I swear I didn’t mean to bite him! His kid was picking on me first, and I just couldn’t get away. I was really scared.

“You always tell us not to bite anyone at WonderWild Zoo, that if we’re good, people will like us. I really don’t want to be abandoned again, so I’ve been trying so hard to hold it in.

“But just now, both of them started hitting me, and I was so terrified I bit back. I’m really sorry, Sierra.”

Sierra’s eyes turned stormy.

Just then, someone in the crowd called out, “Sierra, I saw it, too! That guy was the one who hit the dog first. I played with this dog last week. He’s super friendly!”

“Yeah, I saw it, too!” another person jumped in.

“Same here!” someone else echoed.

One said, “We can’t let a good dog get wronged! He deserves to be cleared!”

Everyone started stepping up for Muddy, speaking out on his behalf.

Muddy looked at the humans who were helping him, his eyes shining with tears as he gazed at them.

Back when nobody ever helped him, he just shrugged it off. He was used to it. But now, with so many people standing up for him, he actually started getting a little sentimental.

Muddy whimpered a few times, lay down on the ground, and looked up at Sierra, full of hope.

Sierra stroked Muddy’s head and said, “Looks like you are innocent after all.”

Then she turned to the man, who just moments ago was acting all high and mighty. She said, “Sir, Muddy is a WonderWild Zoo dog, so if he bit you, that’s on us.

“But he’s already had his rabies vaccine, and we’ll arrange for you to get your shot, too.

“As for the 30 thousand you want, that’s not happening. We’ll cover your nutrition fee and any lost wages for getting the shot, and the zoo will compensate you 300 bucks. If you’re not happy with that, you’re welcome to take us to court.”

He thought he’d walk away with 300 thousand, but when it dropped to just 300 bucks, his mood soured instantly.

Still, he figured it was better than nothing. Not caring about the dirty looks from everyone around, he stuck out his hand and said, “Fine, 300 bucks it is. Just give it to me already.”

Sierra transferred the money to him right away.

Just as the man was looking all smug, Sierra added, “Oh, and by the way, you won’t need to buy tickets for WonderWild Zoo anymore. Starting today, you and your kid are banned. Go take your kid to some other zoo from now on.”

The man’s eyes went wide.

His smug grin froze on his face, making him look downright creepy.

He snapped, “Sierra, what the hell do you mean? Since when do businesses kick out their own customers?”

Sierra kept her face blank as she said, “Sorry, but your kid attacked my dog. There’s no way I’m kicking out the dog I rescued just to please you, right?”

Sierra didn’t bother to save him any face at all.

Some folks in the crowd were even muttering that Sierra was way too generous to give him anything at all.

They thought, ‘Seriously, the kid was the one messing with Muddy vanking on his ears, and the dad didn’t just let it happen. He even joined in! Folks like that totally deservis

Seeing the man about to make a scene, some parents with quickly jumped in. One of them said, “Sierra’s right! Would you rather we kick Muddy out instead of you?”

Another chimed in, “Yeah, Muddy’s way better behaved than your kid. If it had been any other dog, your son would’ve been seriously hurt.”

“Apologize to Muddy!” someone shouted.

“Yeah, apologize!” others echoed.

More and more people started standing up for Muddy, taking his side and making sure he got justice.

The man’s son was so freaked out that he started screaming his head off, his shrieks echoing through the crowd.

Seeing someone raise their phone to film his kid, the man quickly grabbed his son and hurried off.

Once the man and his kid had left, Sierra thanked everyone for their help and asked, “Hey guys, could you please not post anything about what happened today online? Let’s keep this off social media.”

Even though the man and his kid were pretty badly behaved, if this got posted and went viral, it might stir up trouble or cause some unwanted backlash.

But what happened with Muddy really made Sierra realize she needed to be careful.

There were just too many stray cats and dogs hanging around WonderWild Zoo. She could afford to care for these furballs for now, but with the zoo turning into a hotspot for strays, the numbers would just keep climbing.

She knew she had to figure out how to find new places for some of them to go.

Sierra decided to kick off an online adoption drive.

But she wasn’t about to let just anyone take one of her animals home.

After hashing things out with Ethan and the crew, they laid down some pretty strict ground rules.

One needed a stable job, had to be able to shell out at least three to five hundred bucks a month for pet food, and Sierra even wanted a background check, plus details about one’s age and family situation.

Most importantly, one had to agree to random video check-ins for six months and pay a twenty-dollar adoption ticket fee.

As soon as those rules went up, a bunch of people who were just thinking about adopting on a whim backed out right

away.

Some netizens even started bashing Sierra, saying her standards were way too high

Sierra saw all the drama the marketing accounts were stirring up online, but she just ignored it.

Once everything was set up, Sierra picked a day when the zoo was closed to host the adoption event.

Even though a bunch of people online called her money-obsessed, there were still over a thousand adopters lining up bright and early.

The animal keepers were running around like crazy, and it wasn’t until five in the afternoon that the adoption event finally wrapped up.

Out of the more than three thousand stray cats and dogs, all but a hundred or so who just weren’t interested in being adopted found new homes in just one day.

Plenty of marketing accounts were just waiting to see Sierra get dragged online over her event, ready to pounce on any drama. But when they checked, there was nothing but praise for Sierra everywhere!

One commented: [Honestly, if those marketing accounts didn’t even show up, they shouldn’t be badmouthing. All these cats and dogs are super gentle.

[The keepers said Sierra, no matter how busy she is, gives them pep talks every single day, and they’re all so well-behaved!]

Another commented: [Can you believe some people are saying Sierra’s just after money? When we adopted, we got two pounds of premium pet food to take home.

[Do you know how expensive that stuff is? It’s like seventy or eighty bucks a pound! Sierra’s literally spending her own money to make this event happen!]

Someone commented: [Sierra really takes amazing care of all the strays. She said herself that there are just too many cats and dogs now, so she’ll keep holding regular adoption events.

[And the ones who aren’t ready for adoption will always have a home at the zoo.]

One commented: [I adopted a big orange cat, and he’s super chunky and has the best personality! The keeper said he’s super clean and even behaves during bath time.

[But when he first arrived at the zoo, he was so sensitive and scratched the keepers a bunch of times. Sierra personally helped him learn to trust people, step by step.]

More and more adopters started standing up for Slerra online, backing her up and defending her. So those marketing accounts that were all set to drag Sierra ended up hyping her up instead.

Sierra had seen it all before: nothing surprised her anymore.

Those online hype accounts would say whatever it took for traffic and money.

She knew if she got into any drama tomorrow, they’d flip on her in no time.

But now that so many animals had found new homes, Sierra finally felt some of the weight lift off her shoulders.

With nothing else pressing on her plate, she spent her days working on rehabilitation training for the lion that had been hypnotized back in Kenland.

But honestly, there was almost no progress at all.

Just as Sierra was about to start searching for someone in the country who’s an expert at animal hypnosis, she spotted Ryan barreling toward her, clearly in a panic.
