Chapter 23

The vet stared, stunned that Sierra, a celebrity, was offering to perform the

surgery.

But her voice was so calm and certain that he found himself following her without another thought.

“Just stop messing around, Sierra,” Natalie said, moving to block her way as Sierra turned toward the operating room.

Sierra looked up, a faint frown touching her brow. “Step aside.”

“I get that you’re worried,” Natalie said, “but you don’t even have your degree. You’re not qualified for this. Let the crew take it to the rescue center where it belongs.”

Natalie was oblivious to the viewers’ reactions streaming across the live chat.

The animal was likely past saving anyway. She was planning to spin this so everyone watching would blame Sierra for its

death.

Her voice rose with the thought. “You can pull these stunts at home all you want, but not here. I won’t let you.”

“She’s right,” Shawn joined in. “The vet has a doctorate, but you don’t even have your junior college certificate. If he can’t save it, what makes you think you can? Don’t make this worse.”

As soon as he finished, Sierra’s cold stare was on him.

The fading bruises on Shawn’s face seemed to sting again. Before he even knew what he was doing, he had taken

behind Natalie.

step back

A moment later, he realized what he’d done and cursed silently. That beating she’d given him had really stuck with him.

He had spent all these days trying to puzzle out why she had changed so completely.

Before, a single word from him could have her cooking for him while running a fever, playing the dutiful assistant without complaint. Now she could barely stand the sight of him.

The thought made him burn with frustration. He grabbed Sierras arm and persuaded again, “I know you’re trying to help, but you’ll just make it worse. Please, stop this.”

“Get lost before I hit you again,” Sierra warned, her eyes flashing as she pulled her arm free.

She then turned to the vet. “You can call my teacher if you prefer But I need to start before he gets here to keep Tris stable. You will assist me.”

The vet paused before asking, “And who would that be?”

“Henry Carter,” Sierra answered.

“Henry Carter?” The vet’s voice rose in surprise, making everyone in the room turn their heads.

The hesitation on the vet’s face dissolved into a bright smile. “You trained under him? There’s no need to call. Please, lead the surgery.”

Henry was the kind of name every vet knew.

Even meeting Henry would be an honor for most vets. To assist Henry’s own student felt like a career-making moment.

The vet led Sierra into the operating room, the others still too shocked to move.

Meanwhile, the live chat was going wild.

[Who’s Henry? Why did that name make the vet freak out?]

[Vet student here. Henry is a legend. He’s famous everywhere.]

[He teaches at Northbel University. He’s a big deal. I can’t believe Sierra is his student.]

[She’s lying. Someone like him would never take her on.]

[She should be cancelled. Hurting an animal for fame is insane.]

Just call the cops.]

Online, nobody believed Sierra could really be the student of a genius like Henry.

In a classroom at Northbel University, Crystal was watching the stream. The comments doubting Sierra made her furious.

She knew how brilliant Sierra was. It was frustrating to watch people online doubt Sierra without any real basis.

When class ended, Crystal pounded her fist on the desk in frustration. “This is so unfair. People online have no idea what they’re talking about. Why are they targeting Sierra?”

Crystal’s roommates felt the same way.

One of them spoke up after a moment. “We should go to Mr. Carter. If he supports her publicly, the university

Crystal’s face lit up. “You’re right. Let’s go now,” she said.

After a tense eight-hour surgery, the operating room doors finally opened. The vet walked out first, his face showing clear relief this time.

Knowing the whole thing was being streamed live, he spoke directly to the camera, “The operation was a complete success. Tris’s heart rate is back to normal, and its temperature is stable. With proper care, it can expect a full recovery and a long life.”

In his excitement to get back and write down everything he’d seen, he forgot to even mention how skilled Sierra had been.

With a hurried goodbye, he practically ran off, looking more energized than tired.

Vivian watched him leave, and then looked into the operating room.

Sierra was standing by Tris. Her face showed the marks of the mask, and there was sweat on her forehead as she waited for it to wake up.

A moment later, Tris opened its eyes. He seemed happy to see Sierra, its eyes wide as it made a couple of soft sounds.

Sierra leaned down as if to say something, and then finally walked out.

Vivian saw how tired Sierra was and moved to support her the moment she stepped through the door.

Sierra was surprised for a second, and then said a quiet thank you.

Vivian’s expression was full of tenderness and concern as she asked softly, “Are you hungry? Would you like something to

eat?”

Sierra shook her head. “I can rest later. Right now, there’s something I need to handle.”
