Chapter 24
The keeper stood frozen, unable to process Sierra’s words.
When she finally found her voice, it came out in a sob. But her words were defensive, not remorseful.
“You have no right!” she cried. “Tris’s a wild animal. Its bite is incredibly strong. How was I supposed to know it couldn’t handle whole chicken bones? Everyone makes mistakes. You can just fire me over one.”
The job was perfect, with good pay for little stress. Losing it would be a disaster, and it would ruin her chances of working anywhere else in the field.
To the keeper, Sierra was merely an outsider with no formal standing at the zoo. She believed Sierra had absolutely no authority to make that call.
Sierra’s face was cold and still, her silence heavy.
She had been waiting for Tris to regain consciousness. When it finally did, it told her that the keeper had always given it whole chicken carcasses or large bones.
Its teeth were too weak to manage them, but not eating meant starvation, so it often ended up swallowing them whole.
If the person in charge of its care had simply done their job, none of this would have happened. And now, the keeper’s defiant question about why she was being fired only sharpened Sierra’s cold anger.
Sierra’s gaze was icy as it settled on the keeper. “Every animal here has a care protocol,” she said, each word deliberate. “You ignored it. You cut corners, and you almost killed a protected animal in this very zoo.”
She paused, a cold, mirthless smile touching her lips. “Actually, I take that back. What you did is a crime. You’re not just losing your job. You’re going to prison.”
As she finished, her eyes drifted briefly toward Natalie.
Natalie flinched, her hands curling into fists. That look had felt intentional, a silent blend of mockery and warning.
Sierra called the police herself. Shortly after, the keeper was led away.
Just before she was taken off-site, a man in a suit arrived in a hurry.
He introduced himself as Thomas Monroe, the deputy director of WonderWild Zoo, who had come at Sierra’s request. As he stepped in, he gave Sierra a quick, knowing glance.
Sierra’s background was known within the organization. Her file was classified, and even Thomas had only limited access to it.
Thomas acted as if he and Sierra were strangers. He first turned to the keeper and spoke with finality, “Sierra’s assessment is correct. You are dismissed.”
Then, shifting his focus to the live stream cameras, he added, “Furthermore, WonderWild Zoo will be implementing stricter employee screenings and will fully cooperate with the ongoing police inquiry.”
The incident had been broadcast live, damaging the zoo’s reputation, and they were committed to a thorough response.
At Thomas’s words, the keeper’s face went pale. In the space of a few hours, she had lost her job and might go to jail.
“Please, I don’t want to go to prison,” she begged, shaking her head. “I made a mistake, Mr. Monroe. Just give me one more
chance.”

Natalie had defended her many times today, and the keeper desperately hoped she would do it again.
But Natalie’s face was hard. The earlier kindness was gone, replaced by a cold stare before she turned

away.
[I thought her job was to take care of the animals. Breaking the rules like that is messed up. But at least Tris is still alive.]
[Get well soon, Tris. Even if you’re ever a bit quick on the draw again, no teasing from me.]
[Who is Sierra really? She knows way too much about surgery, animal rescue, and even wildlife regulations, not like a regular student.]
[She’s just a show-off.]
[She doesn’t even care about animals. It was all a fluke, just dumb luck.]
Moments later, Henry, who had a massive following, shared a screenshot of the comment and posted it for

He didn’t stop there. His next post clarified things. [Sierra is my direct student. She’s a top student who has won the national scholarship for three years running. And she has never ranked below second in her field.
[And that means she was always top of her class and even had the highest SAT score in the state. She finished university two years ahead of schedule, and has already run several wildlife rescues in the field.]
The viewers online were stunned as the details of Sierra’s accomplishments came out. They realized she was just on a whole

But the surprises didn’t stop. Henry, who hadn’t posted online in three years, suddenly decided to comment about Natalie.
His post read: [Natalie, you’re in the arts program at Northbel University, right? You mean to tell me you’ve never heard of my best student? Wasn’t she adopted by your family? After all this time, you really don’t know where she studied?]
He went straight for the attack, tagging Natalie directly. The internet was stunned by the bold move.
Soon, students from the veterinary program started adding their own comments to Henry’s post.
[Go ahead, I dare you to talk trash about Sierra or Mr. Carter.]
[Natalie’s so fake. If Sierra hadn’t forced her way into the OR, Tris would be dead.]
A user tagged a popular pet account with a comment. [Isn’t this Sierra’s dog, Payton?]
[She’s posted about Payton nearly every day for three years. She’s completely devoted to that dog.]
[And people claim she doesn’t like animals? Please.]
[Funny, it’s always the Sterling siblings spreading that she’s not smart enough and doesn’t care about animals.]

Henry was a heavyweight in his field, someone even a star like Shawn wouldn’t want to cross.
And with students and influential alumni from Northbel University watching closely online, nobody in their right mind would pick a fight.
What really caught people’s attention was Henry’s final post.
Viewers were puzzled. Even with a strained relationship, it seemed impossible that the family wouldn’t know which university their adopted daughter attended.
Just when the drama seemed to be dying down, Henry quietly liked a number of the more pointed comments.
Then he replied to one of them, as serious as ever. [Exactly. I’m just her teacher and I remember every grade she ever got. You have to have something to brag about, you know.]
Henry wasn’t scared of the Sterling family. They had money, but so did he. What they didn’t have was his kind of influence.
Gradually, the online audience pieced it together. A man of Henry’s standing wouldn’t create such a public spectacle without cause. He was doing this entirely for Sierra.
He called out the Sterlings publicly and took a subtle dig at Natalie. It felt like a clear warning to anyone who might think of harming his beloved student.
But what happened next was even more shocking. All at once, dozens of official media accounts began rushing to tag Sierra online.
When internet users finally read what those accounts had shared they were left completely speechless.
