Chapter 239 The Heavy Rain Caused Landslides
Sierra had gotten used to Elliot’s mischievous ways for a long time.
Vivian was just like that by nature, so Sierra had no problem with Elliot’s personality.
Elliot had finesse and could be ruthless and efficient with outsiders, but at heart, he was just a genuinely good guy.
Sierra watched everything happening inside the car. Even though she couldn’t hear a word, just catching Elliot’s micro expressions made all the gloom she’d been carrying these days seem to lift in a flash.
She headed back to her dorm, ready to finally get some real sleep.
It had been an exhausting month. Sierra was lucky if she got four hours of sleep a night.
After washing up, she’d barely laid her head on the pillow when her phone, sitting nearby, suddenly started ringing.
When she picked up, it was Sharon’s voice on the other end.
Sharon must have sensed Sierra was about to hang up, because she rushed out, “Sierra, don’t hang up. There’s something super important I need to tell you.”
Sierra paused for a moment, caught off guard.
Seeing her hesitation, Sharon jumped in, speaking quickly, “Sierra, Natalie ran off. I’m afraid she’ll try to get back at you. Just be extra careful, okay?”
Nobody had mentioned Natalie for a long while.
Ever since David and Elouise went to jail, Natalie had just vanished, as if she’d never existed.
All the charges landed on David and Elouise, and since Natalie hadn’t done anything illegal, the cops never bothered with her.
Sierra had been so busy with the rescue stuff that when Sharon suddenly mentioned it, she’d pretty much forgotten all about Natalie.
“What do you mean by Natalie ran off?” Sierra asked.
Suddenly, something dawned on her, and she let out a sneer. “You guys locked her up in that little dark room, didn’t you?”
On the other end, Sharon was left speechless, feeling as if she had a lump in her throat.
She couldn’t help but remember how she used to be okay with locking Sierra up in that room so many times.
Back then, when Sierra was locked up, she never made a fuss, so they never thought anything about it.
But after Natalie was stuck in there for months, she came out looking like a total wreck. Her hair was a mess, and she was filthy, left with nothing but skin and bones, practically losing her grip on reality.
Later, Sharon locked herself up in there for a day too.
Just one day, and she was about to go crazy herself.
She just couldn’t figure out how she could’ve been so cruel, shoving Sierra into that nightmare.
Sharon’s voice was low and heavy on the other end. “Sierra, I know I messed up. I won’t interfere with your life anymore, but I’ll keep sending you money every month. Please, just take it, okay?
“And Natalie-she’s pure poison. As long as she’s still breathing, she’ll come after you the first chance she gets. Sierra, you really need to watch your back.”
“Mrs. Sterling, if you really cared about me, you’d go to the police, wouldn’t you?” Sierra shot back.
She didn’t bother with any more words and just hung up.
But Sharon’s words did give her a heads-up.
The pain from her previous life was still as clear as day, haunting her even now.
She and Natalie shared the same birthday, and when Sharon suggested they all go shopping together and buy them gifts, Sierra was over the moon.
It was the first time Sierra ever asked her director for time off. She dressed up all pretty and followed the Sterlings around, feeling like she was on cloud nine.
Her head was full of daydreams about what kirk Chingmotive Sterlings might get her.
Successfully unlocked!
Back then, Sierra had never realized the Sterling eletroy, leaving her trailing behind all by herself.
Then, out of nowhere, one of Natalie’s obsessed fans came charging at her.

Everyone else reacted instantly, but because Sierra’s hearing in one ear was damaged from a fever, she was a split second too slow.
By the time she tried to dodge, it was already too late.
The guy stabbed a fruit knife into her stomach, twisted it like a maniac, yanked it out, and went in for another stab.
Right before dying, every feeling in one’s body would become unbearably intense.
All Sierra could think was that if she were a water balloon, all the water inside her would have leaked out by now.
She had no idea how many times that crazed fan stabbed her in the stomach. When she finally looked down, the white dress she’d picked out just for today was stained deep red with blood below her chest.
Sierra had never realized a person could bleed this much.
When she collapsed, the bystanders recognized her and sneered, saying she had it coming. The Sterlings heard and, with a look of disgust, stepped back and disappeared from sight.
At that moment, Sierra was filled with hatred.
She hated how the Sterlings went out of their way to bring her back, only to never truly value her.
She was the one who went through all the pain, but they showered Natalie with all their affection.
After being given a second chance at life, Sierra finally saw things for what they were.
She was the only normal one, and the whole Sterling family was just a bunch of morons.
Now they were even into locking people up. Sierra didn’t waste a second. She grabbed her phone and called the police to turn them in.
Meanwhile, at the Sterling residence, Sharon was still worrying about Sierra when one of the maids called, sounding all flustered.
Sharon was already in a foul mood, and seeing the maid’s anxious face made her frown: “What’s with all the panic?”
The maid blurted out, “Mrs. Sterling, something’s wrong. There are a bunch of cops outside.”
Before she could even finish, a few police officers walked over. “Mrs. Sterling, we’ve received a report that you’ve been holding a young woman against her will. We need you to cooperate with our investigation.”

Sierra couldn’t care less about what happened to Sharon.
But Natalie was on the loose, and just like Sharon had said, Natalie was totally unhinged. She’d definitely blame everything on Sierra.
But this time around, Sierra wasn’t about to let the tragedy of her previous life happen all over again.
Hence, she let Thomas know about it.
Less than three hours later, visitors at WonderWild Zoo started noticing there were way more security guards around, and they were all seriously good-looking.
With so many people keeping watch, Sierra finally felt safe enough to crash in her dorm for three whole days.
Payton, seeing Sierra sleep for so long, would whimper every now and then until Sierra woke up and gave her dog a quick pat on the head. Only then would Payton finally trot off to her job, looking totally at ease.
The last adoption event was a huge hit, and the staff would randomly drop by to check on the animals. During one of these surprise visits, they caught an adopter being totally irresponsible.
The dog care team didn’t even wait for Sierra’s orders-they just jumped in their cars and drove straight to the adopter’s place to reclaim the dog themselves.
The adopter, too stubborn to admit defeat, flat-out refused to give up the dog no matter what. Things got so heated that they ended up dragging the whole mess to the police station.
Even at the station, the adopter flat-out denied any wrongdoing. She insisted the dog was hers now, so how she treated it was her business and nobody else’s.
But the staff wasn’t about to let it slide. Right there in the police station, they kicked off a chaotic dog-snatching showdown. It was so wild that even the cops couldn’t break it up.
In the end, one of the staff members shot back, “Go ahead and sue us if you want. The cops are right here, and the courthouse is next door. WonderWild Zoo isn’t afraid of you.”
With that, they took the abused puppy straight back to WonderWild Zoo without a second thought.

Payton was the chief of security now, but its squad never took it seriously. They were always messing around with dog treats just to annoy her.
Ryan was the only reliable teammate it ever had, and the rest were just a bunch of troublemakers.
Now that Ryan had gotten himself a cushy official gig, he couldn’t be Payton’s sidekick anymore, so every time it saw him, it gave him the classic doggy side-eye.
After mulling it over, Payton went all in and set up its very own doggy security squad.
It rallied all the cats and dogs that hadn’t been adopted, turning them into a patrol team that strutted through WonderWild Zoo in grand style every day.
While Sierra was away, Payton and its furry squad actually busted two tourists trying to sneak in without paying by climbing over the fence.
When Sierra returned and heard the story from Thomas, she couldn’t resist treating Payton and her whole squad to their favorite dog treats as a reward.
With their bellies full, Payton and its team got even more pumped for patrol duty.
Every day, they’d weave through the crowds, sporting the patrol harnesses Sierra had picked out for them, quickly becoming the zoo’s newest spectacle.
But the good times didn’t last long.
Amberty saw its first drizzle in May.
It was rainy season, so nobody-not even the weather guys-thought much of it at first.
But after two weeks of gloomy, endless rain, one night a thunderclap split the sky, and then it poured like crazy. The rain just dumped down in buckets.
The downpour didn’t let up for three days straight.
Early that morning, as soon as Sierra woke up, she overheard the zookeepers anxiously saying that there had been landslides in the raccoon enclosure and several other animal habitats.
