Inside the vehicle, Ethan lowered his binoculars, his heart clenched tight as he watched the desert lions forced to hunt seagulls just to survive.
“I never thought desert lions would actually resort to catching seabirds just to stay alive,” Ethan muttered.
None of them had ever seen lions actually go after seagulls for food before.
Timothy turned to Sierra and asked, “Sierra, what should we do now? Should we get out and help them return to their original territory?”
Sierra replied, “You guys stay in the vehicle. I’ll go check it out myself.”
Sophie said, “I’m coming with you.”
Sierra didn’t refuse.
She took a moment to explain to everyone, “There have been so many people hunting the desert lions lately. If we all get out there, with how skittish they are, they’ll just run off.
“If I go alone, worst case, I won’t be able to reach them, but they won’t hurt me.”
Everyone understood right away.
Ethan reminded her, his voice earnest, “Just be careful. We’ll be here if you need backup.”
The cops and mercenaries nearby had no clue what was going on as the wildlife rescue team chattered away.
Then. Sierra suddenly got out of the vehicle and slammed the door behind her.
“Why did Ms. Sterling just get out? Should we hurry and follow her?” one of the cops blurted.
“She’s got this,” Ethan said.
The cops stared, stunned.
He thought, ‘What?
‘How’s she gonna do that?
‘Is she really going to talk to the lions?’
The cop blurted out, “No way, I thought you guys were joking! I can’t believe Hustralia actually has courses that teach you how to talk to animals. If I’d known, I would’ve signed up in a heartbeat!”
He thought, ‘Damn, Hustralia’s courses are wild!’
The wildlife rescue team tried their best to stifle their laughter, all bowing their heads and struggling to keep a straight face.
Meanwhile, Sierra was rocking a lavender windbreaker with drawstrings, her head wrapped up in a matching scarf, and a pair of oversized black shades covering her small face.
The desert lions had spotted Sierra from a mile away.
The desert lion king shot her a wary look, but its stomach was growling so loud that it couldn’t help itself. It bent down and took another bite of the seagull.
White feathers were stuck all over its muzzle. Even though it didn’t want to hurt Sierra at all, as she kept coming closer, a

“Human, just because you look good doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want with me. I’m not sharing my seagull meat with you. Get off my turf, now!” the desert lion king growled.
The desert lion placed its paw protectively over its meal, looking for all the world like a dog guarding its food.
Sierra explained, “I’m not after your food.”
The desert lion king snapped, “Then get lost.”
Sophie heard what the desert lion king said and asked Sierra, “Was it cursing us out just now?”
Just as Sierra was about to say it wasn’t that bad, the desert lion king snapped at Sophie, “Yeah, you, too. Get lost!”
Sierra sighed. “Yeah, it was pretty foul-mouthed.”
Sierra sighed to herself. “Guess I was just overthinking things. Let’s just take our beef and head back.”
With that, Sierra turned around and left.
But the moment the desert lion pride heard there was beef, their eyes instantly locked onto the meat in Sierra’s hand.
They just stared, totally mesmerized, at the beef she was holding
Sierra could literally hear the sound of the lions swallowing their drool.
Sierra arched her brow, but didn’t even hesitate. She turned and strode off with Sophie, heading straight for the car.
The desert lion king panicked, totally forgetting about its hard-won seagull feast possibly getting snatched. It rushed right up to Sierra and shouted, “Stop right there! You’re not leaving!”
Sierra showed that she seriously had no clue what it was saying.
She’d tied the beef up with a thin string on purpose, and the smell of meat had the desert lion king practically drooling all over itself.
The desert lion watched Sierra keep moving. Just a few more steps and she’d reach the car, and with all those humans hanging around, there was no way it was going to get close.
It flicked its tail a couple of times, then opened its mouth wide and let out a commanding roar, “Human, stop right there!”
Then, with a few quick leaps, the desert lion jumped in front of Sierra and Sophie, blocking their way. Its eyes were glued to the beef Sierra was carrying, totally fixated.
“Drop the beef and maybe I’ll let you walk away alive!” the desert lion king growled.
