Chapter 260
Sierra’s eyes were determined.
The cop was stunned for a moment.
Shock and disbelief flashed in his eyes, but Sierra met his gaze head-on, not backing down at all.

Finally, the officer nodded. “Sierra, if you’re set on this, we’ve got your back. But our resources can only last for half a month.
“If we can’t find any trace of the desert lion pride by then, we’ll have to pull out to keep everyone safe.”
Sierra replied, “Thanks.”
The officer replied politely, “No, Ms. Sterling, we should be thanking you.”
If it weren’t for Sierra, the wild desert lion pride might have disappeared before the local conservation team even realized what was happening.
Everyone spent the night resting in the tents.
Since there was concern about big predators roaming around, both the police and the mercenaries posted guards for the night, so the wildlife rescue team actually got a good night’s sleep.
The next morning, just as dawn was breaking, everyone quickly freshened up and got back in the cars, ready to hit the road.
Riding through the desert was rough. After a few hours, even Sophie, who was usually tough as nails, looked pale and worn
out.
Timothy and Ryan had it even worse. They were puking their brains out.
Luckily, after six hours, the group finally made it to the Skeleton Coast.
But as soon as they stepped out of the cars, everyone’s eyes went wide in shock at the sight before them.
The Skeleton Coast and the Nymeria Desert were connected. On one side, the pale blue ocean lapped at golden sand dunes.
But the moment they set foot on the Skeleton Coast, a wave of scorching heat slammed into them, and the wind whipped up sand and gravel so fiercely that they could barely keep their eyes open.
On the other side, the pale blue water had deepened to a dark blue, with white surf crashing onto the desert sands. Seagulls landed on the beach, searching for tiny fish and shrimp to eat.
They’d thought the desert they’d seen before was already lonely enough, but here on the Skeleton Coast, that sense of desolation was even more overwhelming.
The officer nearby explained, “This place is called the Skeleton Coast not just because of where it is, but also because it’s so barren that even animals can’t survive here.
“That’s why I told Ms. Sterling it’s basically impossible for desertions to make it out here.”
Sure, their old territory was dangerous, but at least there was prey to hunt.
But this place was different.
Maybe they’d spot a couple of weird mutated lizards or bugs, but that was it. Nothing else survived.
Desert lions weren’t going to chase after those little critters.

“Not necessarily,” Sierra replied gently. “When animals are pushed to the edge, they can break through their limits, just like people do.
“In Hustralian legends, there are stories of heroes overcoming impossible odds. It’s all about finding a way when things seem hopeless. Animals aren’t so different.”
Battling the elements, the land, and even each other.
The local cop didn’t fully understand, but he had to admit Sierra made sense.
Humans had countless ways of thinking, and with so many animals out there, they might be the same.
The officer just stood there, watching Sierra head for the beach. The rest of the group wanted to follow, but Sophie stopped them with a look.
The officer looked totally confused, and then saw that as Sierra got close to the water, the seagulls that had been quietly foraging suddenly burst into the air.
It looked like Sierra was talking to the seagulls. They’d been chill, but now they were flapping like crazy, some even fighting, all trying to get her attention like they had something urgent to report.
Turned out, that was exactly what was going on.
Right now, those seagulls were actually tattling to Sierra.
“Sierra, you’ve got to help us! We seagulls were living here just fine, but ever since those desert lions showed up and couldn’t find anything else to eat, they started eating us!” one seagull squawked.
“Seriously, since when do lions eat birds? Just yesterday, one of them gobbled up my cousin! Now my cousin’s mom is on a hunger strike, saying it can’t go on without its kid!” another seagull chimed in.
“And that’s not all…” another seagull started.
“Stop!” Sierra cut them off.
Sierra was already getting dizzy from all the seagull drama, so she quickly reached out to quiet them. “Hold on, guys! I promise, if we find the desert lion pride, I’ll make sure they leave you alone and head somewhere safe.
“But you know, we humans can’t fly, so we have no way to find the desert lions by ourselves. Can you help me out? I brought some homemade cookies to share with you.”
“We’re in!” the seagulls squawked in unison.
“Yeah, it’s definitely not for the cookies!” one of them chirped, mouth full as it munched away.
Sierra couldn’t help but laugh.
They did have drones, but the local models had lousy battery life and were tricky to handle. Sierra had given them a shot but ended up ditching them.
Honestly, birds were way better than drones.
But with so many seagulls crowding around, Sierra had to break the cookies into tiny crumbs. After the seagulls sampled the treat, the whole flock took off for the desert.
Sierra turned around and saw the mercenaries and cops, faces wrapped up tight so only their eyes showed-and those eyes were locked on her, stunned and full of disbelief.
She walked back over, trying to play it cool. “Honestly, in our field, talking to animals is just part of the job, isn’t it?”

Her gaze landed on the wildlife rescue team.
Ethan jumped in first. “Yeah, we actually had courses on animal communication back in school.”

Alex chimed in, “Totally, but you’ve got to put in the work. If you flunk those classes, you don’t even get to graduate.” Mark said, “Seriously, this kind of thing happens all the time. Nothing to be surprised about.”
