Weston was willing to trust her now.

Sierra let out a sigh of relief.

“Weston, I promise I won’t let you or your pride down. If you trust me, I hope you’ll let me take the lead from here,” Sierra said.

Weston glanced at Sierra a couple of more times, then lowered itself to the ground and gently rubbed its head against Sierra’s knee. “Okay.”

Sierra shot Sophie a look, and Sophie handed her the sniper rifle before heading back to the convoy 300 feet away.

A hundred-strong team quickly arrived, all of them lugging heaps of meat.

Sierra turned to Weston. “Weston, there’s enough food here for you and your pride to fill your bellies. After you’ve eaten, I’ll check everyone over.”

But Weston didn’t answer.

Its eyes were fixed on the food, completely transfixed.

Except for that stint at the desert lion base, Weston hadn’t seen this much fresh beef in ages.

“Sierra, we’ve got a few old desert lions and a young desert lion king back at our territory. Can we take some of the beef home for them?” Weston asked.

Sierra was speechless. “Why didn’t you say so earlier?”

Weston looked genuinely aggrieved. “It’s not like I had a chance, and you never asked me either.”

He felt pretty wronged. Their plan was to each snatch a couple of seagulls to bring back for the old lions watching over the cubs after they’d eaten, but then Sierra showed up out of nowhere.

Sierra was honestly shocked that Weston only mentioned this now. “Go ahead and dig in. There’s more beef in the trucks, and later you can show us the way to your territory.

“We’ll crash there for the night, and tomorrow, someone will make sure you get to a safe base.”

Weston blinked, just realizing. “Sierra, you’re not coming with us”

Sierra shook her head.

She added, “We’re still searching for a pregnant lioness named Bessa. Has anyone in your pride spotted it?”

“Bessa?” Weston echoed, sounding surprised.

It said, “Yeah, I know it. We were at the same base for a while. Its mate got killed by humans. Then the base got attacked and we all escaped.

“I tried to get it to come with us, but it wouldn’t. It said it had something important left to do. And now it’s pregnant? That’s a real problem!”

“What do you mean?” Sierra asked.

Weston sighed and explained, “Bessa’s only three, and it’s never had cubs before.

“Desert lions aren’t really good at raising cubs, and with how harsh things are, most of the little ones die right after they’re born. If Bessa doesn’t get help from the pride, its cub doesn’t stand a chance.”

Sierra’s heart sank.

Not only did Bessa look like it was about to give birth, but it was also injured.

“Weston, Bessa is the main target for those people, so I have to do everything I can to find it,” Sierra said.

Weston said, “Bessa’s really wary of humans right now. But if it’s their main target, I think I know why.”

Before Sierra could ask, Weston explained, “Those people are after Bessa because it saw its mate get killed by humans, and then it turned around and mauled the human who shot its mate

“Bessa got its revenge on the humans,” Weston added.

Sierra froze for a second, and then figured the person Bessa killed was probably some billionaire from overseas. With that guy dead, the people running the base would be in hot water, so they pinned it all on Bessa.

But there was no signal out here, so even if she wanted Ryan to dig up some info, there was nothing she could do about it.

Sierra let out a sigh. “Weston, take us back to your territory first

Weston had finally let its guard down. It told its pride to hurry up and finish the beef, and then led Sierra and the crew in a grand procession into the heart of the desert.

“You guys need to be careful. There are places in the desert that swallow you whole,” Weston warned.

Sierra caught on instantly.

Weston was talking about quicksand, one of the many hazards out here.

But they were totally prepared for this trip. They had all the right gear, local police were guiding them, their vehicles rolled in the center, and Elliot’s mercenary convoy covered the rear.

If anything went sideways, help would be there in no time.

After hearing Sierra’s explanation, Weston finally relaxed. “Just stick with our pride. We’ll make sure you quicksand,” it said.

More than twenty lions ran up front, with dozens of vehicles trailing behind in a long line, winding their way through the desert.

About an hour later, here and there, a few cacti and some scraggy, nameless trees started popping up in the endless sand.

The desert was blazing hot, with hardly a scrap of greenery anywhere they looked.

Sierra scanned the desert with her binoculars and spotted a few old desert lions, their faces streaked with white fur, sprawled out under any spot with shade they could find.

The midday heat was brutal, and the pride was clearly struggling in the sun.

Once they got out of the vehicles, Sierra told her team to quickly fetch drinking water from the supply truck for the lions. Then she turned to Weston. “Where’s the cub you mentioned?”

Just then, a female desert lion let out a low, rumbling call.

“Human, are you here for my cub?” it asked warily.

Sierra heard a soft thud and turned around to see the lioness open its mouth as it spoke, and the cub it’d been carrying tumbled onto the sand.

The cub was barely half an arm long, its eyes matted shut with gunk and tears, so skinny that they could see every bone.

When it hit the ground, it let out a tiny whimper, then, probably too hungry to even struggle, just flopped over and stuck out its little pink paw pads, looking heartbreakingly cute.
