However, no matter how Weston tried to approach the cub, it would just turn its head away, whining softly, but never opening its mouth.
Sierra was stunned by Weston’s fierce parenting style with the cub.
“Weston, listen to me first,” Sierra said. “Give this piece of beef to the other older desert lions.”
“But if the cub doesn’t eat, it will die,” Weston said.
Sierra held up the cub’s tiny baby teeth for Weston to see and sand helplessly, “Its teeth are so small and dull. There’s no way it can chew beef, let alone seagull meat.”
Desert lions hardly ever have cubs, so they didn’t really know when they were supposed to nurse them or when to start feeding them meat.
The little guy was so hungry that it was practically skin and bones. What it needed right now was milk, not beef.
“Ryan, could you go back to the car and mix up some goat milk formula?” Sierra asked.
Ryan nodded right away and headed back to the car.
Off to the side, the local cops and mercenaries were already putting up tents.
None of them knew the first thing about rescue work, and Sierra didn’t need their help anyway, so everyone just took all their cues from her.
Ryan didn’t hesitate. He had the goat milk formula ready in under three minutes.

The desert lion cub, who’d been flopped out and looking hopeless, caught a whiff of the milk, latched onto the bottle, and started chugging away.
In no time, its skinny little belly was round and full, and they could see it getting livelier by the minute.
After wiping the gunk from the cub’s eyes with a wet wipe, Sierra realized it had super-rare odd-colored eyes.
But its eyes looked a little inflamed, and there weren’t any eye drops in the first aid kit. Luckily, someone happened to have some, so Sierra gave the little guy a couple of drops, planning to see if it worked by tomorrow.
Once Sierra had given the desert lions a quick checkup, she started sorting out where to send them.
She found the local police officer in charge and said, “It’s too risky to leave the desert tonight. Tomorrow morning, the police will take these desert lions to the protected area you’ve setup.
“The rest of us will keep searching for Bessa through the night, and we won’t leave the desert until our supplies run out.”
Worried Weston’s pride might be uneasy around humans, Sierra added, “Just stay calm, alright? I promise these people won’t hurt you. Once I find Bessa, I’ll come back and help sort out your territory issues. Please trust me, okay?”
The lions crowded around Sierra.
Anyone else would probably have freaked out with all those massive, sharp-toothed beasts watching them, but Sierra was totally unfazed.
Having these animals around her just made Sierra seem even more mysterious.
Weston knew exactly what Sierra was worried about, so he said, “Sierra, don’t worry. I’ll keep an eye on them. We’ll wait for

you to come back.”

If the pride had any complaints before, they all disappeared the moment Sierra gave them plenty of beef and pitched in to help with the cub.
Even the cub, now full of energy, stumbled over and wrapped itself around Sierra’s leg, chirping, “Mommy, I’ll be waiting for you to come back!”
Sierra froze for a second when the little guy suddenly hugged her.
When she heard the cub call her “Mommy”, Sierra’s lips twitched awkwardly, and she shot a glance at the cub’s actual mom.
But the mom just acted like it hadn’t heard a thing, even giving its cub an encouraging look, as if to say, “That’s it, kid, call her ‘Mommy’!”
Sierra was speechless.
Timothy, standing nearby, noticed Sierra’s odd look and couldn’t help asking, “Sierra, what’s going on?”
As soon as he said it, Timothy suddenly remembered how all the cubs had treated Sierra like their mom. His mouth twitched. “Sierra, don’t tell me this little guy…”
He thought, ‘It didn’t take you as its mother, did it?’
Before he could finish, Timothy heard the little cub by Sierra’s leg let out two tiny chirps.
That settled it. Timothy was now absolutely sure this little guy really thought Sierra was its mom.
Ethan couldn’t help but laugh. “Sierra, you just came for a few days and suddenly you’ve got enough kids to form your own band.”
Sierra was speechless as well.
She really hadn’t seen that coming.
She wasn’t sure if it was the System’s fault, but all the male wild animals were always trying to play the husband, the cubs kept calling her ‘Mom’, and even the females would hit on her.
Sierra gave a helpless chuckle, scooped up the cub, and handed it back to its mom.
The female desert lion looked super let down when Sierra returned the cub.
It said, “Sierra, how about I just give you my kid? Seriously, I’m done with this one.”
The cub nodded like crazy. “Works for me. I don’t want my mom either.”
Ever since the cub started thinking for itself, it kept wondering, “What did I do in my previous life to get stuck as a desert lion this time around?’
Sure, it sounded badass, but honestly, life as a desert lion was way less comfortable than being a cow or horse on the plains.
When it was born, it had three siblings, but its mom was so inexperienced that it sat right on them and squashed them flat, so this one was the only one left.
Not that being the only survivor made things any better.
On the third day after it was born, humans showed up. Its momotally forgot it even had a cub and took off the second it heard gunshots.

It ran who knew how far, and then suddenly remembered it had a kid, so it came crying and running back.
The curb barely made it out alive.
