Upon hearing they were searching for a desert lion, the geckos immediately began chattering among themselves.

“A lion with a name? But lions never even bother to look at us, so how would we know their names?” one gecko said.

“Didn’t Sierra give us some clues? This lioness is pregnant, so its belly must be huge. Let’s think carefully. Have any of us seen this lioness named Bessa in the past few days?” another gecko suggested.

“I think I saw it…” a gecko said.

The geckos kept chattering, most of it was just random stuff, but Sierra actually caught a few useful bits.

“I saw that lioness, too. Not sure if it was Bessa though, but its back leg was hurt. It was limping,” one gecko said.

“Its belly was huge,” another added.

“I saw a bunch of cars chasing it today. It looked like it was barely hanging on,” a third gecko said.

“I saw it, too,” another gecko chimed in.

“Wait, you guys weren’t the ones chasing it? Then you should help it out. That desert lion is a poor thing,” one gecko said.

More and more useful info kept coming in.

Sierra quickly asked for the last place Bessa was spotted, gave the geckos some food, and rushed back to camp.

When Sierra and the others got back to the team, she immediately said, “Everyone, wrap up your meals and in five minutes! Gary and Holden are chasing Bessa, so let’s move, now!”

As Sierra spoke, she was now holding a little gecko in her hand.

This time, the wildlife rescue team’s car led the way, with the little gecko perched on Sierra’s shoulder.

“Yeah, just keep going straight. Up ahead, there’s a huge cactus tree, and next to it are two dead trees. Head toward the smaller one…” the gecko directed.

“It’s just up ahead, but watch out. There’s a quicksand area coming up. Sierra, you need to drive extra carefully,” the gecko

warned.

After the gecko’s warning, Sierra slowed down and pulled over in a safe spot.

She gently placed the little gecko on the sand, gave it a heartfelt thank you, and offered it some extra food for guiding them.

Then Sierra turned to the local police behind her and said in their language, “There’s a quicksand area up ahead, so we’ve got to be careful. Don’t drive the vehicles in.

“Make sure everyone grabs their gear and weapons. We’ll go on foot from here.”

The local police officer nodded right away.

He gave some instructions in the local language, and then everyone grabbed their gear and strapped it on.

Out in the endless desert, every step left their feet covered in sal.

With no vehicles, everyone had to walk, and their progress slowed down a lot.

On the way, Sierra asked every animal she came across if they’d seen Bessa. Thankfully, the gecko’s directions were super helpful.

“As they crossed the final dune, Sierra suddenly heard a familiar voice coming from the base of a distant sand hill.

“Bessa, you sure know how to run! The boss wants your head as payback for that rich family. Let’s see you try and escape now!” someone yelled.

Sierra quickly gestured for everyone to halt.

They were already up on the sand dune, with enough cover around to stay out of sight.

The cops and mercs were all seasoned pros. The moment Sierra raised her arm, they crouched down, each finding a hidden spot and making themselves invisible.

Sierra lay low at the edge of the dune, squinting in the sunlight she watched the scene unfold below.

It was Gary and Holden, the very same men Sierra had spotted Back in Grave Canyon. Now, they were surrounded by a fleet of off-road vehicles and a small army of bodyguards.

Bessa had half its body trapped in the quicksand, with nothing to grab onto for support. The harder it fought to escape, the deeper it sank. Its frantic movements were only speeding up its descent into the quicksand.

Ryan’s face fell with worry. “Oh, no!”

He quickly turned to Sierra, sounding desperate. “Sierra, what do we do? If this keeps going, Bessa’s either going to get killed by Gary and Holden, or it’ll get buried alive in the quicksand!”

Sierra didn’t say a word.

Ryan didn’t press her further.

‘I know Sierra can handle this,’ Ryan thought, but I just can’t stand watching an animal suffer like this, right in front of me.’

While Ryan was still struggling with his emotions, Gary and Holden took a few steps back and gestured to the bodyguards behind them.

The bodyguards quickly turned and grabbed a rope as thick as a wrist from one of the vehicles.

They swiftly tied a strong, adjustable slipknot at one end, then hurled it with deadly accuracy, landing it right around Bessa’s neck.

In the next instant, several bodyguards rushed forward, grabbed the rope, and yanked it hard.

The noose tightened instantly, and Bessa let out a hoarse, desperate cry. Sierra couldn’t catch what it said, but she could see the endless hatred blazing in Bessa’s eyes.

Bessa was hauled out of the quicksand.

The instant it was free, Bessa tried to lunge at Gary, its eyes blazing with fury.

But Gary immediately raised his gun, not hesitating for a second

The gunshot echoed across the vast desert.
