Chapter 268
Bessa was totally stunned.
Especially after it heard Sierra’s words, its nose stung with emotion.
It finally took a proper look at the girl standing before it.

Bessa rarely saw girls with Valorian features. Sierra looked barely grown, so young and pretty that Bessa couldn’t take its eyes off her.
To animals, looking at humans was just like humans looking at animals. They all seemed pretty much the same: two eyes, a nose, and a mouth.
If it really had to tell people apart, it was all about the little details, like who had round eyes and who had those narrow, squinty ones.
But some faces just had that extra something.
Take the wildlife rescue team, for example. With just one quick glance, it’d memorized every single one of them.
Bessa couldn’t keep up its usual cool anymore. It stammered, “You’re human… Why would you worry about me?”
Sierra blinked, and then said earnestly, “According to human science, you’re really important. Desert lions are one of the most endangered species on the planet.
“If desert lions ever disappeared, it would seriously affect the local ecosystem.”
Bessa just stared at Sierra, not saying a word.
It could tell Sierra had more on her mind, and Bessa found itself waiting, almost hoping to hear what came next.
Sierra said directly, “Of course, there are no desert lions in my country, so your extinction wouldn’t really matter to us.”
“Then why are you still trying to save me?” Bessa asked, its tone serious. “If you help me, other humans might retaliate against you. You could end up just like my husband-beheaded and skinned for your hide. Aren’t you afraid?”
“Who really wants to die for no reason? And who isn’t afraid of death?” Sierra said seriously, her voice unwavering. “But whether you’re human or animal, most of us are here for a reason. My reason is to save you.
“Even if it means risking my life.”
Bessa fell silent.
It wanted to tell Sierra she was being stupid, but no matter how hard it tried, the words just stuck in its throat.
In the end, Bessa said, “One day, you’ll regret this.”
“That day will never come,” Sierra said, giving Bessa’s head a gentle pat. “It’s all sorted now, so come back with me.
“Whether you want to come to Hustralia with me or stay here in Nymeria, it’s your choice. But for now, you have to leave the Skeleton Coast.”
Bessa was just about to agree.
But before it could get the words out, a sudden, intense pain shop through its abdomen, and a stream of milky fluid started to leak from between its legs.

Chapter 268
Bessa was still stunned, but Sierra sprang into action.
She quickly helped Bessa lie down on the sand, and then rushed back to the car.
Ethan and the others heard the commotion and hurried over. “What’s going on?” Ethan asked.
“Bessa’s going into labor!” Sierra called out.

Giving birth was always dangerous for animals, and Bessa was already spent before labor even began. If it wanted to deliver its cubs, it would take everything it had just to get through it.
Sure enough, Bessa cried out in pain.
The whole wildlife rescue team scrambled to its side.
Alex knelt down beside Bessa, wearing gloves.
Then he looked
up,
his face tense. “Sierra, I checked. The cubs are stuck in the birth canal, and they’re in the wrong position. If this keeps up, both Bessa and its cubs are at serious risk.”
Hearing that, Sierra hurried over.
Just like Alex said, Bessa was having a complicated labor-a breech birth, with the cubs’ feet coming out first.
If the delivery didn’t happen soon, the cubs would suffocate, and Bessa itself was at serious risk of heavy bleeding or infection.
If they were at the rescue center, Bessa might still have a shot at surviving, but out here, there wasn’t even cell service.
Sierra’s mind raced, and she made a quick decision. “Ethan, call Elliot on the satellite phone and tell him what’s going on. He’ll know what to do.”
Ethan nodded, and then glanced at Bessa, who was lying on the ground, gasping for breath. “What about Bessa?” he asked.
“Alex, you’ll be my assistant. I’m going to try to get the cubs out, Sierra said.
Delivering an animal was way more brutal than helping a human. No gentle hands here, and the odds of making it out alive were slim to none.
Sierra crouched down, moving with extra care as she ran her hand over Bessa’s belly.
Bessa was totally spent, panting hard. Its belly fur was soaked and clumped with yellow sand. It looked absolutely wrecked.
Bessa’s voice trembled with urgency. “Sierra, I don’t trust other humans, but I trust you. Please, save my cubs. If I don’t make it, let them see you as their mom. I…”
Bessa was already making its last wishes known. It wanted to say something truly heartfelt, but in the end, all it could think about was its unborn cubs.
It was terrified it wouldn’t survive, but what scared it even more was the thought of its babies dying with it. All it could do was plead with Sierra to save them.
But before it could finish, Sierra cupped Bessa’s muzzle, cutting off.
Even though Bessa was completely spent, it was momentarily stunned when Sierra held its mouth shut.
Sierra sighed, exasperated. “Bessa, you’re not dead yet. Is it me you don’t trust, or yourself? Do you really want your be born without their mom?”

Bessa said weakly, “But I just don’t have the strength to give birth anymore.”

Sierra pulled out a bowl of milk and a big hunk of beef, placing them right in front of Bessa. “If you can eat, you can make it. Try to get some energy back. Don’t stress, I’m here for you, okay”
