Chapter 287

Cesar froze for a moment, his eyes going from fear to utter disbelief.

Then he put on an aggrieved look and said, “Officer, there must be some misunderstanding. Yes, I adopted a child recently.

“My wife and I have been unable to have children for years, so we went through the proper legal channels at the orphanage to adopt one. But we did everything by the book!”

Anderson said, “In that case, you won’t mind if we come in and ask you and your wife a few questions?”

Cesar nodded quickly. “Of course not,”

Anderson marched in with a whole squad of officers.

The mine was massive. Everything around was blanketed in dus but the dorms and offices for the staff were really fancy. Even up here on a mountain covered in ash, those buildings still looked super luxurious from the outside.

The officers glanced around, and Cesar explained, “The guys working down in the mine do tough, dirty work. Sure, the pay’s good, but it’s dusty as hell down there, and there’s always the risk of a cave-in.

“So, I figured they deserved somewhere nice to relax after work, so I fixed up the dorms really nicely for them.”

As they chatted, everyone walked into the office.

Cesar pointed at a commendation banner hanging on the wall and said, “Last year, a blogger shot a video here, and then the local media interviewed us and awarded us this.”

Sierra’s eyes lingered on the wall for a few extra seconds.

Cesar noticed Sierra and squinted. “Aren’t you Ms. Sterling from WonderWild Zoo?”

Sierra raised an eyebrow. “You know me?”

Before Cesar could say anything, Sierra jumped in, “I always thought you were buried in mine work and only came down from the mountain once a month. Honestly, I didn’t expect you recognize me so fast.”

Cesar’s face stiffened a little.

Sierra’s bluntness caught him off guard, and for a second, he didn’t know how to respond.

Cesar let out a couple of awkward laughs, not daring to keep the conversation going. He quickly changed the subject. “Ms. Sterling, you’re a legend online.

“Anyone who spends even a little time watching videos knows you. My wife is a huge fan. Could you sign an autograph for her sometime?”

Sierra smiled and agreed, “Sure.”

Cesar’s wife, Linda Fleming, showed up soon after. She was fifty years old, with wrinkles and streaks of gray in her hair.

She came in holding the hand of a little boy who looked about five.

As soon as the kid walked into the office and spotted Cesar, he ran over and called out, “Dad!”

Cesar hugged and kissed his son right in front of everyone, looking all affectionate.

Sierra and Sophie locked eyes, both of them clearly caught onto something.

Everyone grabbed a seat on the couch, and as soon as Linda heard they doubted the adoption paperwork, she dug out the paperwork in a hurry and said, “Officer, how could there be a problem with the paperwork?

“Cesar and I went to the orphanage ourselves to pick out this child. It took us half a year just to get through all the red tape.”

Linda let out a sigh and continued, “When I was younger, I got sick, and the doctors said I’d probably never have kids. Back then, I was all about my career and didn’t really care whether I had kids or not.

“But now that we’re older and life has settled down, not having a kid started to feel like the biggest hole in our lives. So, we decided to adopt.

“Cesar and I have money, and even if we only get to be with our son for twenty or thirty years, it’s totally worth it. The second we stepped into the orphanage, this little guy rushed over and called Cesar ‘Dad’.

We both felt like it was fate, so we kicked off the adoption process right then and there. We got him registered just in time so he could start school before he turned six.”

Right after Linda finished, the little boy in Cesar’s arms shouted. I’m not some trafficked kid! I’m my mom and dad’s son!”

Anderson quickly said, “Hey, little guy, we’re just here to ask your mom and dad a few routine questions.

“Lately, there have been a lot of kids who were trafficked and then adopted through orphanages, so we’re checking up on all the kids adopted in Amberty in the last three months.”

The little boy snorted, chin held high, and said, “You’re all just bad guys anyway!”

Linda scolded him sharply, and the boy immediately burst into loud tears.

Cesar said with concern, “He’s just a kid, why are you yelling at him?”

Linda wanted to call him out for being clueless, but with the cops right there, she had to save face for him.

So, Linda said, “Officer Anderson was just doing his job, and he even tried to explain things to Kenny. But Kenny called the cops bad guys.

“If all the police are bad guys, then who’s left to be good in this world? He was being so rude. Isn’t it a mom’s job to teach her kid some manners?”

As she spoke, Linda felt a little upset,

She really did care about Kenny, even if he wasn’t super close to her. It was her first time being a mom, so she treasured and protected him and didn’t let that weird feeling get to her.

Linda apologized to Anderson and then made Kenny apologize too.

Kenny glanced at Cesar, but Cesar’s face was stone cold. Kenny didn’t dare act up again. He mumbled an apology, and Linda took him away.

After Linda and Kenny left, Cesar flashed a polite smile and said Officer, sorry about that. Kenny’s a sensitive kid, and he was old enough to remember things when we adopted him, so he’s not always easy to handle. Sorry for any trouble he caused.”

Cesar was a seasoned businessman. Dealing with cops was second nature to him.

Anderson didn’t mind. He nodded and said, “We’ll need to take your adoption paperwork with us for a closer look.”

“Feel free to check whatever you need. I’ll cooperate, Cesar replied.

Anderson nodded.
