The situation was turning critical. Sierra kept her voice gentle but urgent. “Angel, be good now. Let Natalie go first. Tell me what’s wrong. I promise I’ll make it right. And you need to stay alive…”

She paused, and then leaned in close, her voice dropping to a whisper near Angel’s ear. “Don’t you want to find your mother and your sisters?”

“I want to find them,” Angel said, its voice thick with emotion. “But my mother and my eldest sister were killed by humans. My second sister saved me. She told me to hide, and she led them away. I don’t know what happened to her next.”

“I will help you find them,” Sierra vowed, her voice low but steady with conviction. “Angel, let me handle this. Just trust me.”

“I…” Angel looked at Sierra, uncertainty and a fragile hope warring in its eyes.

Every night, Sierra came to visit. A quiet calm always settled over Angel in her presence. Some instinct whispered that this human was kind, that the gentle voice and patient games were real.

Still, it wasn’t sure if it should truly place its trust in her.

Sierra’s gaze was so open and honest. Looking into it, Angel felt its own resistance melt away.

“I believe you,” Angel whispered, its grip finally loosening on Natalie. Its large, earnest eyes fixed on Sierra. “You’re the only one I trust.”

Natalie scrambled to her feet, her whole body shaking.

She tried to say something, but Sierra’s voice stopped her, cold and final. “Get out now, or you won’t leave at all.”

Words failed Natalie. The memory of Angel’s attack was still fresh, and she simply turned and fled from the

room.

With Natalie gone, Sierra finally allowed herself to speak openly. “Angel, you are smart. You know I can understand you.”

Angel nodded, familiar with the sight of Natalie talking to the three raccoons next door.

“Tell me what you know. If I can help, I will,” she whispered.

Angel’s ears perked up, and its small voice grew hopeful. “Really? You mean that?”

Sierra gave a steady nod.

All at once, Angel began to talk, sharing everything that had happened months ago.

“We lived in a vast mountain once,” Angel said. “Our clan had all the food and fresh water we could ever need.

Then humans came. They built their towers below our home, and we had to keep moving on.”

The realization struck Sierra that another species had been uprooted because of humans’ relentless demand for resources.

Her hands tightened, but she stayed silent and let Angel continue.

“When my mother had us, our home was already fading,” Angel went on. “Staying meant our clan would die. So we left.

“We weren’t alone. Other clans sent their strongest too. My mother, my sisters, and I were part of that.

“We’d heard about a safe place across the river in Yondeland. My mother led us through the rapids. We were almost there when it happened.”

Its voice grew thick with sorrow. “We found a grove, but we didn’t know humans claimed it.

“We were starving, so we took one of their sheep. A man came with a gun. My mother and oldest sister died protecting us. My other sister led him away so I could run.”

Angel wondered why other humans couldn’t be more like Sierra.

Their home grew smaller each time they were forced to move, until only a handful remained from what was once a great clan.

Their mother led them for miles, searching for a safe place where the clan could live in peace. But humans found them and took that too.

Angel’s little mind couldn’t make sense of it. It looked up, hurt and bewildered. “Sierra,” it whispered, “did we do something wrong?”

“No,” Sierra said, her voice gentle but firm. “You did nothing wrong.”

She pulled Angel close, cradling it. “I will help you find your mother and your sisters,” she promised softly. “I will bring them back to you.”

The viewers watched this quiet exchange unfold on their screens.

But with Sierra’s microphone removed and Natalie’s destroyed by Angel, the audience could only watch the silent scene. Everyone was aching to know what words Sierra and Angel were exchanging.

[What’s wrong? I can’t hear a thing.]

[Neither can we. Looks like Sierra took her mic off.]

[Just my luck to catch all this drama while slacking off.]

[That thing attacked Natalie. It should be put down. Why would Sierra stop the staff from calling the police? Doesn’t she realize what just happened to Natalie?]

[And didn’t you see that Natalie would have died without Sierra there?]

[It’s still a wild animal. People should know better to approach it.]

[So what are they even saying? Why cut the audio now?]

[This place is a joke.]

Sierra cutting her mic only made things worse. It gave the haters exactly what they needed, and the internet erupted with outrage.

Later, Natalie posted online about her condition, complete with photos of her scratches. People flooded her with sympathy, saying she was just unlucky to meet a creature with a bad temper.

Sierra’s brow furrowed as she scrolled through the growing criticism of the zoo online.

She told Henry about the raccoons shot in Yondeland, and then made a call to Thomas.

“Mr. Monroe,” she said into the phone, “I want to make an official statement using the show’s audience. We should post it directly through our own account. What do you say?”

Thomas had been outraged by what happened to Angel’s family, but as a man in his fifties, the world of social media was a mystery to him. He had no idea how to explain the animal’s actions online.

So when Sierra offered a clear plan, it was exactly what he needed. “Do it,” he agreed instantly. “I’ll make sure management backs you up.”

With his approval, Sierra quickly created the account.

She posted a message right away. [In response to recent discussions online, we’d like to clarify that our staff provides safety guidance to all guests before and during their visit.

[Natalie breached our rules by touching Angel without following required sanitization procedures. Please remember that even the most cuddly-looking animals are still wild.

[We ask guests not to touch them without permission, and not to hold the zoo responsible for any resulting injuries.] The statement was signed off with a smiley face that felt less than sincere.

The statement was quickly shared by several official accounts. Within half an hour, it was spotted online and began to trend, catching the attention of even more people.

The zoo took a clear and unyielding stance, and netizens immediately lit up the comment section.

[That’s cool. They made an account for this?]

[They’re really standing their ground.]

[I love how they defend their animals. Sierra’s been handling Angel for a while with no problems, but Natalie touches it once and it reacts badly. She must have done something to upset it.]

[The zoo is right. Fluffy or not, it’s a wild animal. And Angel must have been through something. You can tell it doesn’t trust people.]

[Let’s not forget Natalie wanted it shot.]

[She didn’t say that.]

[Look how it let her go. It seemed so sad. Something awful must have happened between them before.)

[How can she possibly play the victim now?]

Online, the tide of opinion had turned decisively, fueling a bitter feud between Angel’s defenders and Natalie’s fanbase.

Meanwhile, Thomas informed Sierra that their superiors knew about the situation and were absolutely livid.

They had authorized the zoo to lead the investigation, tasking them with finding the bodies of Angel’s family and any other raccoons in Yondeland without delay.

Sierra nodded, ready to go, but then she hesitated when she remembered she was in the middle of filming the show.

Thomas waved his hand. “Forget the show. Finding those raccoons is what matters now.”

Sierra gave a slow, dry smile. “But there’s a ten-million-dollar penalty,” she said quietly.

“Ten million? That’s not a big…” Thomas blurted out before he realized what he was saying. The next instant, he froze, the meaning sinking in as his eyes went wide.

“Okay, scratch that. We can’t afford it,” Thomas said, suddenly serious. “But we should go to Yondeland. I’ll talk to Frank.”

Thomas didn’t waste time. He went straight to Frank and suggested taking the group into the wild to look for

raccoons.

Frank slapped his knee in excitement. “Into the wild? I love it. Let’s go.”

That night, Frank announced to the guests that for the next few days, they’d be going with Thomas to Yondeland to film wild raccoons.
