Sophie quickly pulled up the nearby surveillance footage and got the license plate number.
But when they tracked the trucks all the way to an intersection, the vehicles just disappeared into thin air.
If these trucks dared to move the cargo so openly, they must have found a hidden route that was almost impossible to detect.
After searching every possible route, they finally uncovered that secret path.
Sophie said, “Vivian, Sierra, you two should head back and get some rest. I’ll take the team and go stop those trucks.”
Vivian knew she couldn’t really help, so she nodded. She said, “Alright, honey, just be careful out there.”
Sophie nodded.
But Sierra said, “I’m coming with
you.”
Sophie wasn’t keen on the idea of Sierra coming along.
But before she could refuse, Sierra added, “I’m a member of the Wildlife Conservation Association. I’ve already reported everything to my mentor and my boss. They’ll be here soon.
“If the police can’t track down those trucks, I might have some other tricks up my sleeve. I can definitely help.”
Vivian and Sophie were both taken aback by Sierra’s words.
Sophie hesitated for a second, then nodded. She said, “Vivian, you head back and take care of Payton.”
Vivian just nodded.
The mountain road was a slippery nightmare. As they made their way up the winding path to the summit, the sky suddenly opened, and rain poured down. A few vehicles got trapped in water-filled potholes, unable to go any further.
The police cars were mired in the mud, and the officers lost track of the trucks. The crew’s faces fell.
Sierra got out of the car, stepping out into the mud as rain poured down. She grabbed a stick and crouched in the downpour, poking around in the dirt with it.
Sophie walked over and said, “Sierra, get back in the car, you’ll catch a cold out here.” As she spoke, she saw Sierra dig up an earthworm from the ground.
Then, Sierra suddenly waved up at the sky, and a chubby gray sparrow fluttered down, landing right on her
shoulder.
The sparrow chirped. It nuzzled up against Sierra, trying its best to get close.

Sophie’s eyes went wide at the sight.

Sierra held out her hand, letting the sparrow hop onto the back of her hand, and offered it the earthworm.
The sparrow gobbled up the carthworm in no time.
“Thank. Is there anything I can do for you?” the sparrow chirped, hopping around.
Sierra gave its tiny head a gentle poke and said, “Hey, little sparrow, you can fly high and see far. Can you help me check if there are any trucks carrying animals up in the mountains?”
The sparrow was practically floating in the air from all the praise. It was so giddy that it started imagining itself as a giant, mighty bird, puffing out its chest with its wings in a silly way.
It said, “Leave it to me. If you keep the snacks coming, I can even get my bird buddies to help you track down those trucks.”
Sierra said, “Sure, but I’ve only found one earthworm so far. If your friends pitch in, once this is over, swing by WonderWild Zoo and food’s on me.”
“No problem. Hang tight here, let me go get my crew to help you,” the sparrow chirped.
The sparrow took off, and in no time, hundreds of birds burst out of the forest, flying off in all directions.
The rest of the cops were still worried about their cars stuck in the mud and didn’t even notice what Sierra was doing.
But Sophie witnessed everything. She said, “You….”
Sierra turned around and said, “This is the other way I was talking about.”
Sophie was definitely not an average cop: sharp, young, and quick on the uptake. She stated matter-of-factly, “You can actually understand animals?”
It was almost supernatural, but Sophie had met people with all sorts of weird abilities before.
Sierra nodded and said, “It’s still under wraps, so keep it to yourself for now, Ms. Sloan.”
Sophie agreed, then acted as if nothing had happened. She helped the other cops push the police cars out of the mud. She shouted, “Come on, one more time. We’re almost there, Front car, hit the gas.”
After ten minutes of struggling, the last police car, buried in the mud, finally got pulled free.
The sparrow finally swooped back and landed on Sierra’s shoulder. It said, “We spotted the trucks you mentioned. They’re about twelve miles up ahead, and it looks like they got bogged down in the mud, too. Let me show you the way.”
Sophie heard the sparrow chirping away. Even though she couldn’t understand bird talk, she could tell the little guy had picked up a lead.
Once the sparrow finished, Sophie asked, “Did you guys find them?”

Sierra nodded and gave a rough direction.

Sophie immediately turned around and called out, “Everyone, get in the cars!”

On the way, Sierra kept her eyes fixed on the sparrow ahead, calling out directions to the cops and sending fresh locations to the Wildlife Protection Association team as they went.
On the muddy, winding mountain road, five blue-and-white police cars tore through the rain, racing toward the trucks.

Meanwhile, on the other side, all seven blue trucks had come to a stop along the road.
This was a dirt road that hadn’t been developed at all, so once the rain hit, it turned into a total mess. Nobody expected every single truck to get stuck in the mud.
The dogs’ desperate yelps and whines from inside the trucks filled the air, driving the drivers ever more on edge.
“Damn it, we’re toast. The boss’s guys just called. He said the slaughterhouse got busted and told us to turn back, fast. You think the cops are gonna catch us out here?” one of the truck drivers grumbled.
He lit up a cigarette as he squatted in the wet grass, his face twisted with worry.
Another driver snapped, “Stop jinxing us. With all these trees blocking the sky, unless those cops can grow wings and fly, they could turn this whole mountain upside down and still never find us.”
The other drivers mulled it over and realized he had a point. Instantly, they calmed down.
“Let’s just wait for our guys to get here. Just need to hold out for three more hours, and we’re golden,” one of them said.
Right then, the wail of sirens suddenly cut through the air, growing louder and closer with every second.
The truck drivers were stunned, their breath catching as four or five police cars rolled up, lights blazing, heading straight for them.
With the cops packing heat, none of the drivers dared put up a fight.
Once the drivers were cuffed, Sophie wasted no time calling for backup to haul them in, while the other officers started snapping pictures of the trucks for evidence.
Then they unlocked the heavy locks on the truck doors.
The moment the doors swung open, the cops were stunned by the sight of countless cages crammed together, packed so tightly that it was almost suffocating.
The cages were tiny, way too small for the cats and dogs inside. There were even huge breeds like Alaskan Malamutes, crammed so tightly that some of their limbs were bent or even broken.

They were curled up in those rusty, square wire cages, howling in agony.

One of the cops let out a string of curses. “How can people be so heartless? These poor dogs might not even make it to the slaughterhouse. They’ll die from the pain first!”
“You’re selling dogs short,” Sierra said, her voice cold as ice.
The cop next to her shot her a look.
Sierra added, “The harsh environment has toughened them up. This kind of pain barely registers for them.”
After a brief pause, Sierra looked over the crammed wire cages inside the truck and said, “There’s no air circulation in here. If we don’t hurry, these cats and dogs are going to suffocate to death.”
Sophie had just hung up the phone and called out, “Unload those cages, now!”
The officers didn’t say a word. Even though they were short-handed, they just hustled faster, no complaints. Every second they saved meant one more animal they could rescue.
Everyone rushed to open up the rest of the trucks, but it didn’t take long before they hit a snag.
“It looks like none of these vehicles are suspected of transporting any wildlife,” one of the officers said.
