Chapter 41

That’s when everyone noticed that one of the trucks was missing.

After talking to the handcuffed drivers, one driver admitted, “Wild animals fetch a high price, so the boss always gives us the best trucks. The only one that didn’t get stuck was the one loaded with wild animals.

“It’s probably already out of the city by now.”

Sierra and Sophie exchanged a look, both thinking, ‘This is bad.’

Just then, Henry showed up with his crew.

Noticing Sierra’s troubled look, Henry took a deep breath and asked, “Sierra, where are those wild animals you were talking about?”

Sierra’s expression turned sour as she replied, “They got away.”

Henry, having seen his fair share of chaos, stayed way calmer than Sierra. He said, “Relax. As long as that truck hasn’t left the city, we’re good.

“We’ve already got a search warrant, and cops are stationed at every exit. There’s no way they’re slipping out.”

Sierra shook her head and said, “That’s not what I’m worried about. The truck lacks proper ventilation. If we don’t find it soon, all those animals could suffocate to death.”

As she spoke, Sierra glanced at the police officers working hard to get the cats and dogs out of the trucks, noticing that some of the big dogs were already on their last legs.

Sierra’s fingers curled unconsciously, her thumb rubbing against her index finger. She said, “Mr. Carter, the wild animals are important, but these cats and dogs matter just as much.

“Let some team members with vet skills stay and help the police, and the rest come with me.”

After that, Sierra spoke softly to the little sparrow perched on a branch nearby.

The sparrow flapped its wings and returned just a few minutes later.

The sparrow said, “You guessed it. That truck went down the mountain. It’s heading southwest, looks like it’s about to enter a village.

“But

you need to hurry. There aren’t many cars on the back road right now, but once it hits the main road, traffic will pick up, and I might lose sight of it.”

Sierra didn’t waste a second. She got behind the wheel and slammed the accelerator, speeding off without a hint of hesitation.

Henry instantly split off a team of over thirty people and ordered, “Everyone, follow Sierra’s car.”

Sierra could tell the driver hauling the wild animals knew the slaughterhouse had been exposed. For two hours straight, he’d been driving all over the map, making it impossible to tell where he was headed next.

The sparrow and the other birds were too exhausted to keep flying, so Sierra let them rest inside the car and started reaching out to other animals for intel.

Every passing second was pure torture for the animals still trapped in that truck.

Sierra pulled over to the side of the highway and closed her eyes, deep in thought.

They’d totally lost track of the truck, and the birds couldn’t keep flying forever. What they needed now was someone who could give real-time updates on the suspect truck’s location.

Sierra thought, ‘If only someone could keep tabs on the suspect vehicle… Suddenly, a lightbulb went off. Her eyes flew open, and she excitedly grabbed her phone.

On Twitter, the official WonderWild Zoo account Sierra had set up had already racked up over half a million followers, and the numbers were climbing every day. It was the hottest thing online right now.

Sierra thought, ‘These fans are our last hope.

Her fingers shook as she flew across the screen, typing out a few urgent lines before hitting send.

Soon, people received notifications of WonderWild Zoo’s post update.

WonderWild Zoo had been blowing up lately, with fans clamoring for a chance to visit. But Sierra kept putting it off, knowing the animals inside still had a ton of problems.

When netizens saw the official WonderWild Zoo account suddenly drop a new post, they clicked in without a second thought.

And what they found was an urgent call for help: Sierra was searching for a truck trafficking wild animals.

The internet exploded.

Angel’s story had just gone viral, and the buzz hadn’t even died down yet. Now, there was a whole wildlife trafficking operation running wild in the city? They couldn’t put up with it.

Fans joined the search for the truck and posted real-time updates on its location in the comments.

One commented: [Hey, is this the truck you’re looking for? I accidentally snapped a pic of it by the roadside about ten minutes ago. It looks just like the one in the post.]

Another commented: [I found one, too. This photo’s from half an hour ago, I heard pigs squealing inside, so I took a picture and joked with my friend that Peppa was on her way to the slaughterhouse. Maybe there are wild boars inside?]

Someone commented: [Seriously? Why do they have to chase thrills by eating wild animals? Isn’t farm-raised chicken, duck, goose, or fish tasty enough for them?]

One commented: [Totally agree. If it’s farm-raised, I can eat it with a clear conscience. But most cat and dog

meat comes from stray or stolen pets that end up in the market, and that’s just nasty.

[And now there are wild animals too: they’re supposed to be hiding out in the mountains, but humans still manage to catch them.]

One comment read: [Honestly, I’ll never get people who cat dog meat.]

A person commented: [In some places, eating cat and dog meat is just a tradition, nothing we can do about that. But stealing, abusing, and killing animals is a whole different thing. It’s just way too cruel.]

One commented: [Update: Just caught sight of the truck. It’s heading for the next province!]

Sierra scrolled through thousands of comments and zeroed in on the crucial info. Using her gut and some quick thinking, she instantly figured out the driver’s route.

She fired up the engine and sped off toward the destination she’d just pinpointed.

Half an hour later, the rain was coming down in sheets, hammering the windshield, loud as hell. It was bright out one second, and pitch black the next.

The truck driver let out a curse. He thought, ‘Man, once I drop this load and get my cash, I’m gonna chill for a whole month. Things had always gone off without a hitch before. Who knew this time I’d get nailed?’

He was still cursing when, out of nowhere, he saw four or five cars parked about three hundred feet ahead, their high beams nearly blinding him.

Just as he was about to start swearing again, he caught sight of the uniforms and badges they were wearing.

The truck driver slammed on the brakes, staring at the people in front of him in disbelief.

One of the women looked delicate and strangely familiar, standing right in the middle of the crowd. Everyone else was clearly there to protect her, like she was the one they all revolved around.

The driver immediately realized that they were from the Wildlife Protection Association from their uniforms and badges.

The truck driver swallowed hard. Just as he was about to turn the wheel and make a run for it, the piercing wail of police sirens blared from behind him.

Sierra stepped out from the crowd, stopping less than thirty-three feet from the truck. She fixed the driver with a cold, unwavering stare. She said, “Don’t even think about running. Step out and surrender while you

still can.”

The rain was coming down even harder, and the truck driver felt like every drop was hammering straight into his chest, making him more anxious by the second.

Suddenly, a huge streak of yellow lightning tore across the sky, thunder booming so loud it made the driver flinch. But Sierra just stood there, calm and unmoving: so cold and collected it was almost scary, making his nerves go haywire.

The truck driver gritted his teeth and stuck his head out the window. He shouted, “Bullshit! Turning myself in

just means jail anyway. I know you can call off your wildlife crew. Tell them to back off, or I’ll plow right through all of you.”

Sierra didn’t flinch, looking at him like he was a clown. She said, “Give it up. You don’t have the guts.”

As soon as Sierra finished, Sophie led a squad of cops who surrounded the truck, forming a tight perimeter.

Sophie pointed straight at the driver, her voice cold as a tomb. She snapped, “Step out of the truck with your hands on your head right now. If you don’t, believe me, I’ll take you down with a single bullet.”
