Chapter 66
Sierra quickly checked the phone that Sophie handed her.
It was just a news article that hadn’t gotten much attention.

But in the photo, bright red blood was streaming out from under the wheels of a white heavy-duty truck.
Pip’s mother was using her head to push against the front of the truck, while the rest of the elephant herd was desperately slamming into the vehicle, trying to rescue Pip.
Sierra’s chest tightened, and she didn’t hesitate for a second. She jumped back into the car. “We’re heading back right now,” she said.
Not a single person from the wildlife crew objected. They just climbed back in, quiet as ever.
The drive from the airport to their original destination usually took five hours, but Ethan sped like crazy and got them there in less than three and a half hours.
By the time they arrived, it was already getting dark.
When they reached the intersection, the road was completely blocked. They had no choice but to park on the side and hike up the mountain for forty minutes.
When Sierra finally got to the scene, the red and blue police lights cast eerie flashes through the jungle, but the rescue was going nowhere.
The mother elephant was half-collapsed beside the truck’s wheels, her body smeared with blood. She kept frantically nudging Pip with her trunk, desperate to wake her baby up.
The rest of the herd slammed their heads into the truck again and again, their foreheads already streaming with blood.
The whole herd was frantic with worry.
Sierra spotted the police officer she’d worked with yesterday and rushed over. Sierra said, “What happened here? Who let a truck this size onto a mountain road like this?”
Honestly, Sierra had every reason to be pissed.
This road was a regular migration path for elephants and other animals, so only private cars or small cargo trucks were supposed to be allowed through.
But the truck in front of them was a huge eight-wheeler, overloaded and totally not up to code.
Pip was barely two hundred pounds, and it had been trapped under that truck for hours. At this point, nobody even knew if it had a chance of surviving.
The police officer looked shocked to see Sierra and her crew back, but quickly spoke up, “We’ll deal with the driver. Don’t worry. Glad you’re here, Ms. Sterling.

“Do you think you can help us guide the elephants away? Our rescue team wants to get in, but the herd is freaking out.”
“They’re not freaking out,” Sierra cut him off, keeping her tone as calm as she could. “Elephants are one of the few animals that actually feel empathy and can recognize death.
“The mother is nudging Pip with her trunk and letting out those low, grieving cries. She’s just trying to figure out if her baby is still alive.”
With that, Sierra walked up to the truck.
The herd, still letting out mournful cries, caught Sierra’s scent, their heads all turned toward her at once.
The mother elephant’s eyes went wide. She stopped nudging Pip, rose shakily to her feet, and started walking toward Sierra, one slow step at a time.
Sophie, worried the herd might turn on Sierra, reached out to pull her away.
But before she could move, the mother elephant slowly lowered herself in front of Sierra, a long, sorrowful sound rumbling through her trunk.
Sophie stopped in her tracks, almost without thinking.
The crowd watched in stunned silence, shocked and deeply moved by the scene unfolding before them.
Even if she couldn’t understand what the mother elephant was trying to say, Sophie knew, she was pleading with Sierra to save Pip.
Sierra’s face was set as she strode into the middle of the herd. “Step back and let our rescue team through. I swear, we’ll save Pip.”
Once she’d finished, Sierra turned to the police officer. “Is the rescue station’s vet here yet?”
The officer nodded quickly. “Yes, the vet’s here. We were just worried the elephants might charge at us, so we held back.”
“Please have them bring me the medical supplies. The herd has already moved away. They won’t attack anyone,” Sierra said firmly.
With that, Sierra grabbed the medical supplies from the rescue station staff and, without a moment’s hesitation, dove right under the truck.
Sierra’s clothes were completely soaked with Pip’s blood, and she couldn’t fathom how terrified Pip must have been, trapped under those wheels.
Sierra took a deep breath, grabbed her flashlight, and started checking Pip’s condition.
Pip’s body was twisted at a painful angle, her gums drained of all color from blood loss.
Luckily, the rescue team had brought compatible blood for her. Sierra wasted no time; she started the transfusion and quickly cleaned up Pip’s wounds as best she could.

It was suffocatingly hot under the truck, Sierra’s body pressed tight against the ground, the scent of blood overwhelming her senses.
Her face went pale, but she kept calling out to the little elephant, determined not to let her slip away.
“Pip, please don’t fall asleep, okay? Your family’s still waiting for you,” Sierra whispered.
Pip’s eyes stayed shut, completely unresponsive. If the monitor hadn’t shown the faintest sign of breath, Sierra would’ve thought she’d already lost her.
While Sierra kept talking to Pip under the truck, the anxious cries of the herd rang out again and again outside.
Sierra could feel more and more rescuers arriving, their voices and footsteps growing louder around her.
Just then, Ethan crawled under the truck and called out to Sierra, “Sierra, they’ve unloaded all the cargo. The rescue team’s about to start cutting the truck apart. You need to get out of there, now.”
Sierra nodded, her movements slow and unsteady as she finally managed to crawl out from under the truck.
Sophie saw Sierra covered in blood, her brows knitting in concern as she asked, “Are you okay?”
Sierra quickly shook her head. “I’m fine, really.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Sierra realized night had completely fallen.
Yet the whole mountain was ablaze with headlights and rescue lights, all the drivers stuck in traffic forming a long, glowing line that stretched as far as she could see.
They’d banded together on their own, working fast to move thousands of pounds of cargo in record time.
Finally, the rescue team could start cutting the truck apart.
The truck driver’s face went ghostly white when he heard that. He rushed out, shouting, “No way, officer.
“This truck is worth a fortune. My whole family depends on it to make a living. If you break it down, we’ll have nothing to live on.”
He’d just been trying to avoid paying the highway tolls, but suddenly, a baby elephant darted out from the side of the road as he was turning.
He couldn’t swerve in time, and that’s how this disaster happened.
He’d always thought they’d just use a crane to lift the truck off, but now they were talking about cutting it up.
The truck driver blocked the front of his rig, yelling, “You might as well be killing me, I won’t let you touch my truck.”
The cop was losing his patience. “The wildlife experts have already checked. The baby elephant’s still alive. Your truck is way too big for this narrow road, and there’s no way a crane can get up here.

“We just need to split the front and back apart, and your insurance will cover the damage, so quit freaking out about your truck.”
The truck driver blocked the front of his rig, refusing to move, and the police and rescue team couldn’t just force him out of the way; it wasn’t allowed by the rules.
Meanwhile, the baby elephant was still trapped under the wheels, and no one knew if she’d make it.
Both sides were stuck in a deadlock.
The truck driver’s face turned chalk white. He hesitated, then finally came clean to the cop, “But I didn’t buy any insurance.”
Insurance for a truck this size cost tens of thousands every year. He figured if he was just careful enough, he could pocket that money instead.
He thought he’d covered all his bases, but never in a million years did he expect to run into an elephant.
The truck driver was stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Finally, he clenched his jaw and muttered, “That little elephant’s been trapped for so long, there’s no way it’s gonna make it. Just let me keep my truck.”
“Enough with the excuses, just tear the truck apart,” Timothy, clearly fed up, stepped forward and yanked the truck driver out of the way like he was picking up a kid.
He glared at him and said, “As long as that baby elephant’s stuck under your truck, your truck’s getting ripped apart. And don’t even start playing the victim.
“You skipped out on insurance, broke the rules just to save some cash, and every year elephants migrate on this road without a single accident. So why is it that this time, you had to be the one to mess everything up?”
Timothy had zero patience for these reckless truck drivers who thought the road belonged to them.
Every time they opened their mouths, it was all about how tough their lives were, Newsflash, everyone had problems. They were not the only ones struggling.
And worst of all, the driver couldn’t stop twisting the truth.
This road has a speed limit. If he had actually followed it, Pip might’ve just gotten bumped, not trapped and
crushed under his truck.
Timothy had been working out in the wild for years and never let himself get out of shape. There was no way that the truck driver could ever stand a chance against him.
Sierra stepped up and said, “Start breaking it down now. If anything goes wrong, I’ll take responsibility for it.”
Pip was in such bad shape. He couldn’t afford to wait another second.
And with the whole elephant herd watching nearby, animals have a strong sense of justice. They might not go after the rest of us, but for the truck driver, the one who caused all this, it’s a whole different story.

So even though the truck driver was crying his heart out, the rescue team paid no mind; they tore the truck apart and hauled it away with a crane.
At last, Pip was freed from the tons of metal that had pinned her down for so long.
As soon as the truck was out of the way, Sierra and the crew rushed over as their lives depended on it.
The elephant herd was desperate to join them, but they held back, remembering Sierra’s promise. They watched anxiously from afar, their trunks echoing with mournful cries.
Sierra looked dead serious, all business.
She didn’t say a word, just grabbed some planks to splint Pip’s broken legs, then pressed clean gauze to the bleeding wounds to stop the blood.
But even with all that effort, Pip was still barely hanging on.
The heart monitor kept beeping, its hollow sound cutting through the mountain night, mixing with the endless chirping of insects and making everyone’s heart sink with helplessness.
Sierra quickly called out to the team, “Get Pip loaded up, take her to the best rescue center we’ve got, now.”
But just as the local rescue team had everything ready to move Pip, the heart monitor suddenly let out a shrill, urgent beep.
The heartbeat line that had been moving dropped sharply, then slowly flattened out into a straight line.
Sierra stared at the monitor, her eyes wide with shock, lips drained of all color.
“Pip,” Sierra cried out.
