Since a few lambs needed to be checked, the group headed back together to the wildlife protection center, where the rest of the staff examined them.
During this time, the local police got involved in the investigation.
When they arrived at the site of the tragedy and saw the ground covered with Kaelenridge Sheep bodies, the officers were instantly alarmed. One of them turned to Sierra and said, “This is a serious matter. We won’t let this slide!”
Mount Kaelenridge was one of Hustralia’s four great no-man’s-lands. It might not be as famous as the other three lands, but the Kaelenridge Wilderness was teeming with wildlife. Every year, tons of hikers and off-road junkies braved the dangers just to cross this desolate zone.
Because of that, the authorities kept a strong presence here.
When it came to tracking people down, it was a walk in the park for them.
A swarm of drones buzzed through the sky, but all they picked up were a few hikers: no suspicious vehicles anywhere.
Sierra guessed the poacher crew knew drones couldn’t fly forever, so they’d slipped deep into the Mount Kaelenridge to lay low.
If that were all, the cops could hang back and wait for them to run out of food and water, then catch them when they tried to leave.
But what really bothered Sierra was the thought that these poachers might not just hide. They could make another move at any time.
Just waiting around wasn’t an option.
The local police understood the situation and quickly said, “We’ll send a team in to check things out. We’ll get back to you within three days.”
“No need,” Sierra replied. She grabbed a few pieces of pork from the kitchen at the protection center. With her other hand, she whistled sharply up at the sky.
The whistle echoed across the sky.
Before the cops could figure out what Sierra was doing, an eagle that had been circling high above suddenly let out a cry and dove straight toward her.
“Careful!” one of the cops called out.
But Sierra just lifted her arm, and the eagle swooped down, hooking its talons softly around her arm like it was greeting an old friend.
The cops stared, stunned.
One of them thought, ‘Seriously, since when are eagles this chill?
Falconers always had to wrap their arms in thick towels. Those talons were sharp enough to slice through steel!
But this eagle was so gentle, it would rather barely perch on Sierra’s arm than actually clutch her, almost like it was afraid its talons might hurt her.
The cops looked like they’d just seen a ghost.

But when they glanced at the wildlife rescue team, everyone looked totally chill, like this was nothing special.
The cops couldn’t help but think, ‘No wonder these experts from the city are so amazing. Not only can they rescue animals, but they can also even train them!
‘Damn, that’s impressive!’
Sierra let the eagle finish eating the pork from her hand, then spoke to it softly.
The eagle spread its wings, let out a powerful screech, and soared off into the sky.
Sierra turned to the cops and said, “I’ll need you to head back and bring your team. We might have to head deep into the no- man’s-land soon.”
Eagles could travel a thousand miles in a single day, and their eyesight was far keener than any human’s. As long as the poachers were still somewhere in the Kaelenridge Wilderness, there’s no way they could hide from an eagle for long.
On the other side, deep in the heart of Mount Kaelenridge, night had fallen.
Four or five off-road vehicles were parked beneath some wind-carved boulders, with a huge supply truck loaded with fuel sitting behind them.
Seven or eight men huddled around a campfire, trying to keep warm.
“Damn, good thing we booked it out of there before those cops and the experts from the city caught up to us,” one of them muttered.
These guys were the poacher crew.
They’d planned to hunt down another herd of Kaelenridge Sheep, make one last score, and then offload the pelts as fast as possible.
But they couldn’t find any sheep, and instead, they spotted the wildlife rescue team closing in on them.
“For real, good thing we bailed,” another guy said, spitting on the ground.
One of them spat and looked at the leader, a middle-aged man named Bradley.
He said, “Bradley, this batch of pelts could net us at least 6.5 million. Maybe we should just call it quits on the Kaelenridge Sheep business. Those cops are no joke. If we get caught, we’re screwed.”
Bradley sat there, thinking it over for a moment, then nodded. He said, “Alright, but the cops are definitely on our tail now. We’ve enough supplies, so let’s just hole up here for a while. No way those guys are gonna keep hounding us forever!”
Bradley thought, ‘Hundreds of Kaelenridge Sheep dead? Who cares.
The cops have a ton of other crap to deal with. They’re not gonna camp out here watching us forever.
‘We are deep in the no-man’s-land now, way out of reach for the cops. We don’t have a thing to worry about.
With that thought, Bradley felt a wave of relief wash over him.
Just this one haul would net them 6.5 million: more than enough to live it up for a while.
Just then, one of the guys pointed up at the sky and said, “Seriously, what’s with all these eagles circling us today? It’s kinda weird, man.”

Bradley glanced up, not bothered at all. He said, “Out here in the middle of nowhere, those eagles must be eyeing the Kaelenridge Sheep meat we’ve got. That’s all it is. No need to get all jumpy.”
With that, he grabbed a piece of roasted meat and tossed it up into the air.
He figured the eagles would swoop down and snatch the meat, but instead, they all turned away, ignoring it completely.
In the end, the eagles perched on the weathered rocks nearby, fixing their gaze on the group in eerie silence.
Bradley finally realized something was off. He stared into the eagles’ eyes, and a chill ran down his spine.
He jumped to his feet and said, “This is freaky. Something’s seriously wrong with these cagles. We need to get out of here, now!”
Bradley thought, “There are way too many weird things that happened out here in the no-man’s-land. With these eagles acting so strange, something bad is definitely about to go down.
Seeing the others still frozen, Bradley stomped out the campfire. He snapped, “Quit eating! Move your asses now!”
Just as he finished speaking, Bradley heard the distant roar of engines.
At that moment, hundreds of eagles suddenly let out a chorus of screeches, the sound echoing eerily across the barren wasteland.
Out of the darkness, a powerful spotlight swept over the poacher crew.
Bradley instinctively threw up his hand to block the glare. When he finally managed to squint through the light, he saw a girl in a red windbreaker and black hiking pants standing by a police car.
And on her shoulder perched an eagle with eyes that seemed to see right through him.
Thinking back to those hundreds of eagles that had just been circling low overhead, Bradley’s face drained of color in an instant.
It suddenly clicked: all those eagles were like this girl’s followers, worshipping her.
Bradley thought, ‘Hardly anyone can tame eagles out here in the wild, and that girl doesn’t look like she was from around here at all. She looks just like that animal expert we spotted earlier today.
‘But seriously, how old is this girl?”
Bradley just couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
“Freeze! Hands on your heads, squat down!” the cops shouted.
Hundreds of armed police surrounded the poacher crew.
The poachers shot each other a nervous look. They all knew if they tried anything, the cops wouldn’t hesitate to fill them with lead.
So, without a second’s hesitation, the whole crew crouched with their hands on their heads and were quickly loaded into the police cars.
While the cops were still investigating the scene, Sierra divided up chunks of the pig’s head and shared them with the eagles who had helped with the operation.
The eagles swooped and hovered around Sierra, and when they took the meat from her hand, they were so gentle, careful not to let their sharp beaks touch her hand at all.

Bradley was left speechless, totally floored by the scene.
As the cops led him away, Bradley couldn’t help blurting out, “Who the hell are you? Are you the one who sent those eagles after us?”
Bradley thought, ‘A girl from out of town can actually tame eagles and even command them to do her bidding?
Is this for real? How can something so unbelievable actually happen?’
