Biker's Claim The Broken Angel is Mine (Cora and Jake) novel Chapter 112

Chapter 112

Cora POV

The ride was educational and exciting. I love that Gunner was happy to explain places of interest and some of the local tourist attractions. Having lived in this area all his life, he had firsthand experience; as a group, they have explored the region thoroughly. Oddball, Scrubs, Hacker, and a few others were a small, closeknit group, going to school together and having each other’s backs.

The scenery became familiar, and it was way too soon; we were pulling up at the hospital.

I have to go, Oddball wanted me back by seven, sorry, you will have to kill a bit of time here.Gunner gave me a long kiss. I was breathless and had swollen lips by the time he released me and reluctantly rode away. I watched until his bike disappeared from view, turned and entered the hospital, made it to my office, and changed into my uniform; today’s uniform had bright cartoon characters on it. Ready for children that come in at night, with chesty coughs, and full of snot, and needing something to smile about, poor mites, I feel for them, it’s terrifying when you have difficulty breathing.

I logged into the system and signed on. It will let them know I am here in the building. if they need me, I won’t be paid for being early. I am on a salary, so it won’t matter how long I work. I still get the same pay, but I do manage to gain a nice bonus to cover it in quarterly reviews.

My first stop was to go upstairs to face Jake, and I believe his parents are here to supervise him moving to the private facility, moving him at night for some reason, maybe they didn’t want the news to know he had moved, till it was done.

The lift was open, people getting off as I reached it, I entered and pushed the button. As the lift rose, my stomach dropped. This was not going to be easy. It was closure, I hoped, the end I needed to do, but still going to be difficult.

I entered his room; his parents were there, packing his things into a bag. He was in his personal PJs, ready to move. Jake looked at me, one eye still closed due to swelling, his head bandaged, leg in plaster, and I couldn’t see under the sheet what else was bandaged, but I had read the reports; I didn’t need to see to know. I stepped in, picked up his file from the end of the bed, and started to read it.

About time you visited Jake, you have been remiss in looking after him.Jake’s mother spat at me, so much hurt and venom in her voice.

I have visited while Jake was unconscious, not that you would know, since you didn’t come and sit with him as a loving mother would.I replied in my calm voice, which scares the staff when I use it.

What’s that you are wearing? Some kidsoutfits?Jake’s father didn’t have the same hurtful look, more like resignation of what’s to come, understanding the long road ahead.

I work here, in the emergency department. This outfit was for the children who come in sick, giving them something to look at while we check them out.I replied more softly. I liked Jake’s dad; he always had a kind word.

That other hospital was your life, why move? His mum interrupted.

Promotion, I am about to start my shift, popped in to see how Jake was doing.Jake’s mother interrupts

again.

How is he doing? He wouldn’t be in this mess if you had just stayed put.

Jake was not my boyfriend any longer. Why stay? He had been bedding SallyAnne for the last six months. We were friends, but not together any longer looked at Jake, who had that confused look in his eyes.

Really? I know I had seen them together a lot, but didn’t think he had jumped ship, good for you, son.Jake’s mother crowed, like she had won the lottery or something.

I forgive you for cheating on me, Jake. Good luck in the future; it will be a long, painful road for you.Jake nodded, acting like he didn’t know who I was, but I felt he did, and was using the memory loss to cover his guilt.

He doesn’t know who you are, isn’t that just dandy?Jake’s mother cackled.

Don’t be like that, dear.I turned from them, not hanging around to hear any more from that awful woman.

Good luck, Jake. You are in for a long ride. I hope you find what you are looking for by the end of it.I said softly as I put his chart back in the holder.

Thank you, Cora, and I hope you find peace.Jake’s husky whispered just loud enough for me to hear. I smiled at him. He knew who I was. Maybe he doesn’t remember the cheating part yet, but he will eventually, and that was enough for me. I forgave him, and that lifted a load off me; he will remember I had forgiven him.

I’m sure the parents have seen the pictures and are not acknowledging them. I have completed all of Jake’s treatments, checked on him when I could, and fulfilled my duties as a nurse.

Jake’s paperwork is complete; he’s ready to be transported. I hear the helicopter will land shortly so that you can leave. Goodbye.

Thank

you for

your help. I know you didn’t need to, and you were hurting too. I don’t hold it against you.Jake’s father hugged me. I tensed at first, but then accepted what he was offering.

Thank you, Mr Simmons. Good luck; it won’t be easy in the beginning.

It never is easy. My wife makes sure of it.I think this was the end of the marriage, poor man, having put

up with her for so long.

I understand, my door is open only to you, if you need to talk or somewhere to take a break. I feel you might need a place to recoup after all this.As much as I didn’t get along with either of them, I feel his wife drove his actions.

Goodbye.Jake croaked out. I waved as I walked out the door, then stopped to check on a few children in the children’s ward on my way down to my office, where I made a coffee, checked the hospital emails, and replied to those I needed to. I needed to refocus and take a break before I started in the busy department.

Chapter 112

Speaking with Jake’s parents was not the most pleasant experience I have had.

Claim

~The Children’s ward sheered me up, even sick, most are happy to see me, and hand out small treats, little games they can play, colouring books, that sort of thing, I buy some each time I shop, and have a drawer full of them in my office, for moments like now when I need a pick me up.

Nurse Cora, you’re the best, thank youOne very sick child said, as I handed over crayons and a colouring book.

My reward is seeing you get better and go home. I gave her a hug, a kiss on the head, and left. She has cancer and is having a hard time with the treatment. My heart goes out to her. Six years old, and would be lucky to reach ten.

The emergency room was about the same as it always is, an hour waiting list, with doctors and nurses rushed off their feet.

Janet, go home, I can take it from here.

You sure, you’re not due for another half hour?

I noticed you didn’t have your full break. Go, take it, or go home.
