Chapter 118
Cora POV
The afternoon shift was full of children who had caught measles at school. It went through the
school quickly, hitting more than half of the school, and the waiting queue of children, crying.
coughing and covered in spots, mothers freaking out because they didn’t know what to do, and spread the measles to even more, who might never have caught it before, it will be in the whole
town in no time at all, it’s a fast moving childrens decease, some like that the shilde has contracted
it, and can put it behind them others fear what they don’t understand. It’s hard sending them away with instructions on care and the duration of the virus. It was exhausting because most of the staff
turned to me to comfort the children, as they can treat, but not comfort; not all have the skills to
handle sobbing children who only want their mother’s arms around them.
Lunch was about the only time I got a reprieve, and I used that time in my office to catch up with
emails,
I was glad when the night-shift crew arrived, and I could go home, away from this crying, coughing
nightmare. I didn’t stitch one person up, and no read accidents came in. My whole shift was with
children, the others saw any adults, and my reputation with children had me stuck with them.
Doctors came by agreed with my diagnosis and signed off on my treatment suggestion, making
the whole process for them over in a flash, not so for me. It took the doctors less than two
minutes to read my notes and sign off, while it took me nearly twenty minutes. I was tired of
looking at sick children, who will be okay in a couple of weeks, well, most will be, some can get
complications, but so far none had come to the hospital in my shift.
I signed out and left the hospital, looking around for Gunner, who was usually under the nearby
lamppost. Still, the bike there I didn’t recognise, so I dismissed the rider and kept looking around,
thinking maybe Gunner hadn’t parked next to that man.
“Cora, over here. The man called out, it sounded like Demetri. I stared at the person for a while. At
this distance, I couldn’t say who it was, the light blinding my view
“Come on, Cora.” He called out again, waiting for me to move.
Maybe Gunner couldn’t make it and sent a club member to pick me up. I pulled out my phone, but
there was no message telling me of a change of plans. As I ventured closer, I recognised Demetri,
and the light was no longer in my eyes; his wide grin and sparkling eyes followed my every move.
‘Demetri, is this your bike? I didn’t expect you to collect me.” I looked past Demetri and at his bike.
It was large, black, and shiny, with a backrest and saddlebags, as if it were ready for travel. I noted
the emblem on the bike was the same as on his cut, and he was the president of the club.

Interesting. It showed me how little I know about this man.
“Hi. Here.” Demetri offered me a familiar helmet, so Gunner knows about this and didn’t warn me.
My face must have spoken volumes when I hesitated to take the helmet.
“Don’t blame Gunner, I wanted to surprise you.” Demetri looked worried now, because I didn’t make
a big song and dance about him being here.
“He could have warned me that he wasn’t coming, even if he didn’t mention it was you. Take me
home, I need a shower.” I took the helmet and climbed on the back. The seat made my legs spread
wider than when on the gunner’s bike, the seat a custom-built one, I think. Not that know much
about bikes or what they should look like straight out of the showroom.
The engine purred a deep sound that echoed into the night air. The vibration between my legs was
strong, but it didn’t give me the same feeling as when I am sitting cuddling Gunner. The back
support had me sitting upright more and leaning back instead of cuddling in close, but I still
managed to move with the bike, as I do with Gunner.
“Haven’t seen you for a while, was working out a plan for that shooter’s trap, take all your time, that
you stayed away,” I asked through the intercom.
“No, I, for the first time since your mother, have a woman that interests me, and we have been
together.”
“Together, as in sleeping in her bed?” I asked, wondering who he found so quickly.
“Scones and I are now an item, as we enjoy good bedroom time, and see if we want to go further, you could call her my girlfriend for now, till we move forward, but I hope to one day make her completely mine.”
“You and Scones, one day, meaning she will be my stepmother one day?” I was searching for my thoughts and feelings about this. I like the woman; she gave me a shoulder and an ear when I first came here and helped me through a rough patch. She was good and kind, and was lost. If Demetri can make her smile and be whole again, I guess I can handle a new stepmother.
“Yes, that’s true, we have yet to bond, and I want to ask Scones to move into my room, but I needed to put it past you first, since it’s your house. If you are not comfortable with that, then I can find
another place to live, and maybe use your helipad and office.”
“It’s your room, Demetri. Who you entertain in there is up to you, and thank you for asking, and not
assuming.” I am not that much of a prude to stop Demetri from having a life. I might get a little pissed off if he paraded Barbie dolls around the house, thinking they were entitled to order staff about and make being home uncomfortable, but Scones is nothing like that. I have no problem

with her moving in.
“Thank you, she will behave.”

“Demetri, so that you know, we have two cooks. Scones, when at my home, will not be allowed to
take over any of the cooking.” I didn’t want her to scare my cook away; if they did, I would be
hunting for another cook when they moved on.
