This questioning was not getting us anywhere; my gut says they have nothing to share, that they were not part of the hierarchy, and only received the need-to-know information.

A guard came in, spoke to Oddball, and both left.

A few moments later, Oddball came back in, looking thunderous. Just when I thought one of the men was going to cave, his phone rang, and he answered it with anger.

He listened intently, then hung up.

“Done for now, let’s go.” I could see that Gunner wanted to argue, but I nodded for Screw to leave when he looked at me questioningly.

My phone pinged; Cora was giving me a heads-up that she must have called Oddball. The last thing we needed right now was nosy police snooping around. Someone went to a lot of trouble to do this; luck was on our side. If Cora hadn’t gone home, we would have been none the wiser till they reached our doors.

“Screw, heat, get showered.” Screw nodded and went in the direction of the laundry, where they had showers. He would put his clothes in the washer and clean himself up. I would get one of the lads to take him some clean clothes. Gunner’s phone pinged too, and he read it, looked over at me and nodded, before heading upstairs to shower and change. We all needed to be clean when the police arrived. Clean as in no blood on us.

It was the quickest shower I have had in a while; I threw my clothes in the wash, along with everyone else’s. Oddball was outside, distracting the police as they combed the area outside for something. Oddball had mentioned the gun. As I was walking up the stairs to shower, my daughter took it home with her. Good girl; nothing to find unless they find the entrance to the cells. That would be a different set of problems.

The police were getting frustrated; the yard was pretty clean, and the group had done a great job of cleaning it up. They had searched the same set of bushes a few times before talking to our members; none knew what the police were looking for. That was a bonus. Oddball hadn’t had time to discuss the find yet. You could see the members were confused over the search.

I called Cora, informing her of what was going down, and that I would be home as soon as these clowns were gone; they really are fumbling about, hoping to find something, but there was nothing to find. It was amusing to some extent, when you know there is nothing here, and seeing the frustration, of sending so many here, they must have an informant, but I don’t think it’s one of ours,

maybe the guy that planted the package, and glass, had contacted the police, not expecting us to be so quick in cleaning up, and finding where it was left behind clues.

The police ended up leaving; they had no warrant to search the clubhouse, only the grounds and car park. They left with apologies, which were not enough for me; I already had my investigator looking into this.

“Time to see that footage and find what Cora had seen; it might give us a clue who it might be.

Oddball, Gunner and I headed in to see Hacker. We crowded around the footage, winding it back a little from where Cora had paused it. It didn’t take long to find the footage, knowing where the police had been searching the hardest. Oddball zoomed in as best he could, but the footage was too dark and grainy to make out too much.

“Leave it with me; I will wash that image through my program and see if I can get a better picture. Will let you know.”

“Send me a copy; I will do the same with my person, see if she can pull something from it,” I said, Hacker forwarded me to shorten version of the footage, half an hour before and after the sighting, just in case a better picture can be made, maybe made a mistake and didn’t think we had cameras all the way to the gate, he or she, might remover her mask, and give us a face to work with.

“Want to come down to the cells again?” Oddball offered, moving to the door; now the drama was done.

“Think best I go see Cora and inspect that package, send it to my lab.

“Good idea. Will you leave some men here, like Screw? I like his methods, but I get the feeling these men are not privy to the information we need.”

“Yes, I am leaving all twenty here. They leave tomorrow, getting ready for the delivery vans to arrive. Have there been any changes to the schedule?”

“Hacker?”

“Not yet. I will check again in the morning, but so far nothing has changed.” Hacker returned to looking at his screen, his fingers flying over the keyboard, writing a code that only he would know, because I don’t code; Cora, if she were here, might know what he was doing.

I climbed on my bike, Scones behind me; we had repacked the bike to take our gear home. I didn’t want Scones doing any more; she was worked up enough from this morning’s incident, and if those ladies don’t cook, the men will have to fend for themselves. The ones that helped Scones clean up and prepare lunch were not on the roster and had plans to go into town to catch up with some friends. Leaving the two that were supposed to work last night and breakfast to do the

same today; if they don’t, I’m not sure what Oddball will do with them-no, my problem.

Gunner was behind us; he, too, wasn’t needed in the cells. Gunner will be back at the clubhouse tomorrow night, after dropping Cora off to work. I believe he will clean the cells and remove any men who didn’t make it. He might be the enforcer, but he was the one who did the cleanup, from what Oddball said. Not a pretty job, but someone trustworthy needed to do it, and Gunner apparently has been the one in the past guess that means he continues to do it.

Scones had someone move all the rest of her belongings here; back at the clubhouse were a couple of changes of clothes. She was looking forward to living here. She helped me unpack the bike, and some helpers came and carried it in; they would put it on the stairs on our floor, not being allowed in our rooms unless we asked them to. Part of Cora’s rules: she has a few trust issues, and banning them was her way of feeling safer. Too many strangers in her home; it was taking her a bit of time to adjust to the changes.

I showed Scones around the place. Before taking her up to our room, I picked up our things from the top of the stairs and moved them outside our door. When we had everything to our door, I opened it and let Scones enter. Then I moved everything inside while she looked around; she hummed and made sweet sounds as she investigated the rooms.

“This room’s a lot larger than I had expected, more like a presidential suite in the motel in town.” Scones was still looking in the walk-in robe, and then out on the balcony.

“You approve then?” I asked as I shifted a box in the walk-in robe that doesn’t need unpacking just yet.

“Approve? What’s not to like? I love it.”

“You will still need to tidy up in here; Cora has refused staff on this floor, unaccompanied “I was worried for a moment that she expected the staff to come in and clean, since she mentioned motels.

“Good, don’t need nosy staff poking around in my drawers.” I let out a long breath in relief.

“I like the left side of the bed; you can have the window side, and any space you need. We have a floor safe if you need to hide anything, like jewellery, personal papers; the number is…” I gave her the code to the floor safe. I didn’t have much in there; most of mine was in my office, locked in a safe there, and no one can enter my office without me knowing about it.

We worked together putting all her belongings away before heading downstairs to hunt for Cora.

“I am going to walk around and investigate this, my new home. I am looking forward to having all this space. Don’t worry, I won’t take over the kitchen.” Scones disappeared in the direction of the kitchen, and I hope she doesn’t take over as she had promised. I turned in the opposite direction to
