Biker's Claim The Broken Angel is Mine (Cora and Jake) novel Chapter 162

Chapter 162

Demetri POV

My men sent me reports on the information they had received from the communication radios Oddball had given them; the radios were so they could receive uptodate information on the vansmovements and where other members were situated. Cora had the link to what Hacker could see: everything he entered or received. We were getting it, whether he was aware that Cora was able to see all that information. I don’t know, and didn’t care at this point; lives were at stake.

My men were camped on the other side of the road; they actually had a better view of the road coming from the direction the vans would come from, so moving was a good idea. Plenty of tall trees for my two snipers to climb, and the moon and sunlight were behind my men, ensuring no light reflected on the binoculars giving away their location.

It pleased me that they moved, reducing their risk. However, I would have preferred if they left completely, but they argued it would tip the informant that their cover was blown. It made me wonder if choosing that location on the other side of the road was Oddball’s idea, and whether the other men we have learned were involved in all of this were involved in it, but how much involved I don’t know yet, as they might be informants and not getting their hands in a dangerous situation.

Oddball might be good at problem club situations, but this, I feel, was a little out of his league, having little experience with this kind of stakeout; his capture of the other men was more to do with following the shooter and confirming they had rifles, but this, we all know, they have rifles and are prepared to use them to kill. Camping close to where the shooter would show up was a high risk and showed his lack of knowledge of the area, or the best place to hide men.

Demetri, look at this,Ruby whispered, as if too loud would distract the others; it would take more than us talking to distract Cora when she is in her zone.

I turned to look at what she had in her hand; it was a report that Cora had printed out from the spreadsheet she hastily put together.

Cora.

Cora looked up from her laptop. Her eyes asked; a frown formed on her face.

I handed her the spreadsheet; Cora’s eyes swept the page with a quick noncommittal scan, then she handed it back.

It’s accurate; more coming when it comes through. Then she turned back to her screen,

showing no emotion to the information on there.

But,Ruby started to say, looking confused by Cora’s lack of emotion.

No buts. Cora has turned off her emotions and is working on facts; time to cry or be hurt comes later.Poor Ruby, she must be conflicted, all sorts of emotions running through her.

But it’s family and friends.Ruby started to argue.

Did you see Bluey as a friend?Cora tilted her head to think before nodding.

I get it; it still hurts.Ruby looked at Cora with glassy eyes, as if she was feeling the pain that Cora wasn’t displaying yet.

Yes, it does, but when there’s work to do, you have to put your personal feelings aside and work on what you’ve got. It’s not easy and shows great inner strength. Not all jobs are enjoyable.I pulled Ruby towards me and held onto her, giving her my strength.

What had got Ruby, so upset were three names. Sally Anne, Jake and Paul were all linked, along with her uncle and stepaunt, not only to the delivery business, but to the gun club, black market and the financials the bank account that was a shared one, under an

offshore account.

Ruby continued to look at the spreadsheet, and sucked in her breath as she started to recognise other names from her club; minor club members, no new officers on the list.

Do the other clubs associated with this one have any links?

Xavier, this list we have, can you have a look at it please?Ruby asked, dragging him away from what he was researching.

He took the list and looked up.

What do you need me to do?he asked, showing no sign of anger or hurt.

Can you highlight all our club membersnames on that list? There are some I don’t recognise.

He took out a yellow and orange highlighter, and started to highlight eight names in all, three in orange and the rest in yellow, and handed it back.

Yellow: old members no longer part of the club; orange: active members.Cora had both the road names and birth names; now it was time to go digging deeper, because this just got uglier. Old members who were still active in the black market were a worry.

It was getting late; Ruby was yawning a lot. This was a lot of mental work for her, something

she wasn’t used to.

My team were set, and I doubt I would hear anything till tomorrowtime to wrap up today’s

work.

Bedtime, team. Can we stay the night, Cora?I saved and closed the computer; that was more than enough for one day.

Sure. The same room you have there for me might be yours here.Cora didn’t argue, just saved what she had done and closed the laptop. Xavier hesitated, but with the rest of us leaving, he sighed and followed us out.

I took a quick shower and climbed into bed, Ruby already in bed, waiting for me.

This has been difficult for me; those people I have worked beside, lived with, to find out they are dirty crooks breaks my heart.

I know.

How do you cope with it?

Accept you didn’t know, had no part of it, and it wasn’t your fault for not knowing. I love that you care so much,I replied, unsure what Ruby was hoping to hear.

Is this the sort of work you do, besides all those properties you own, and businesses you own besides the security business?

Yes, in normal circumstances I would be out there with my men, but they understand where my head is at right now, and are giving me some slack.I tried to be careful with what I said, not wanting to scare Ruby more; she’s so sensitive. A marshmallow, all hard on the outside, when she needs to be, but this big softie on the inside.

Where’s your head right now?Ruby asked, having rolled over and drawing circles on my cheek as she looked up at me, a soft smile on her face, the worry lines she’d had earlier fading.

Honestly?
