Chapter 172
Cora POV
The night was bliss.
Xavier ensured I had cum, at least twice, before we left the bed the next morning.
Three days had passed since our flying visit to get married; Dad and Xavier had been working in my office. Dad drove over to us each morning and stayed late. Ruby didn’t come every day. she was still sorting out her home and learning the program. This was something so different for her. We have a club party tomorrow, celebrating the dual marriage and becoming new members. Apparently, the club has been excited to meet us and celebrate us becoming members. So far, our marriage has not reached them or the public. Dad and Xavier had been organising the public announcement party because they were the ones to be inviting the guests. We talked about asking some of our former club members to come, but few were on the list of those wanting them here. Xavier wants Scrubs and Hacker here for the party, and it’s still up in the air whether he wants Oddball there. It’s been a hard decision; Scrubs and Hacker will be here tonight. Dad had organised for them to be flown over.
Today I am going to visit Jake and put that behind me; it was time to stop the calls from the rehab center. I don’t want to be in his life, or have him in mine. He has his chance. Ruby was going to come with me, but she would be visiting Dormouse and trying to question him. When I have finished with Jake, I will find her and chat to him too. Maybe I could get more out of him, but then everyone saw Ruby as a nurturing figure, so possibly he would open up to her, needing someone from his world to talk to.
“You are going by SUV, and you are taking six bodyguards, end of story.” Dad was giving Ruby rules to go by. Xavier and I were leaning against the wall, watching the discussion. Ruby didn’t want six, and Dad was threatening even more if she fought too hard.
“You done? I want to leave before I need to return, or we won’t be going at all.” I interrupted. having had enough of the argument that was going on in circles; neither was going to give in.
“Yeah, we are done, six guards. Go; the sooner you leave, the sooner you’ll be back,” Dad said
and walked with us out the door.
“Dad, don’t suffocate Ruby,” I said softly when I leaned in to hug him. He needed to let Ruby find her feet, and he needed to accept she wanted to do things her own way sometimes.
“Trying. This is new to me; I don’t want to let her down, as I did with your mother. Poor Dad, I get it; he wants to protect her and not make the same mistakes, but he’s not that young man, and his mother isn’t ordering him around. I don’t remember what he told me about them; they

weren’t high on my want to know list. I wanted to know more about him and my mother’s younger years, before she became withdrawn and stayed in her office working on her business, and now that I know more, it was my uncle who made my mother the recluse that she became.
I sat in the second set of seats with Ruby. This SUV was a nine-seater, not a vehicle I would want to drive, but okay to be a passenger, with two guards in the front and the other four behind us, plenty of room, a specially made vehicle, bulletproof as much as a vehicle can be bulletproof.
The drive was just over an hour away, and we settled down for the ride.
“Demetri drives a hard bargain. I bet if he wasn’t so busy and his men weren’t returning today, he would have joined us and stood about like one of the guards.” Ruby started to complain, which made me giggle.
“You need to understand, he didn’t fight for my mother, and he is now trying to prove to himself more than he is to us that he deserves the chance with me and you, that he deserves this kind of happiness, and doesn’t want to stuff it up.” I started to get in Ruby’s head; she needed to give him some slack too.
“I understand, and I am trying. This is a huge change for me too, out of the kitchen and into the limelight; it’s scary. I guess I am trying to hold on to myself, but to be honest, I have no clue who I am anymore. I lost myself years ago. So I am trying to find my footing, and yeah, scary.” Ruby hugged me the whole way to the rehab center.
I left her on the first floor, she turned right, and I turned left.
The closer to the room, the more nervous I got. The last time I saw Jake, he looked terrible; mind you, most people would look bad after such a horrific accident. He should be a little bit better, and hopefully have some memory back.
I stood outside his door, he had a shared room with one other man.
Took a few deep breaths, then entered the room. Jake was sleeping, his television on low, some movie was showing. He was never one to last long watching boring movies.
I picked up his chart and started to read.
Blood pressure, a little high, but that was expected. The rest looked okay. He was still on some high painkillers, which would explain him being asleep; the doses he was on would put the average person asleep or at least very groggy. He was having physiotherapy, where he was co-operating; I didn’t say if there had been any improvement, but that’s not surprising. they have milestones they set, and he might not have reached one yet.

Jake’s eyes opened as I flipped the page.
“Cora?” He croaked out, looking at me as if he didn’t believe it was me.
“Hi Jake, how are you feeling?” I greeted him as I put his chart back in the slot.
“What are you doing here?” he asked, not answering my question.
“The doctor said you needed to see me, get something off your chest, and that would aid your healing,” I replied, wondering if I should have told the doctor I was coming today. I did tell the woman that I would try, but didn’t commit to a time.
“Yeah, he has been pushing for me to talk to you.”
“What do you want to talk about?” I asked, moving to a seat close by, but not touching the bed. I didn’t want him reaching out and touching me.
“I still don’t remember the accident, or even a few months before, but I do remember you were my girlfriend. Are you still my girlfriend?”
“No. We are not still together; in fact, I am married now.” I raised my hand to show my ring.
“I see. What happened between us?”
“You were cheating on me. I caught you and left.” I replied with the simple version.
“I cheated? That doesn’t sound like me. Are you sure?”
“Yes, I am sure.” I tried to keep my emotions out of this; it wouldn’t do me any good, and I
hate rehashing old news.
“Who was I with then?”
“Sally-Anne.” I hadn’t mentioned Paul yet.
“Your best friend?”
“Yes.”
“Why, did we have a falling out?”
“No, she offered you something I couldn’t.”
“What?”
“You were having a different kind of intimate relationship with her that I couldn’t offer you.”
“Jake, why did you start doing black market runs?”
425 Ponts
“Your uncle started me on it, gave me good money to do them, and because I was with you, he trusted me to keep it quiet.”
He said Uncle, so he knew he wasn’t my father.
“How long have you known he was my uncle?”
“Uncle, did I say uncle?” Too late, buddy, you have done it now.
