Chapter 173
Chapter 173
Ruby POV
A small hiccup, I called it, when Demetri almost pushed a whole slew of men on me to look after
Cora tried to make it better, and in some ways she does; I get it, but I want to spread my wings. Now they are no longer clipped, and I am free of the cage I was in. I didn’t realise how much I was missing out on when I was in the kitchen, keeping too busy to notice the world passing me by. Now I am out, I want to see the world and do things I have not done before. All the things Demetri could help me tick off the list, as he had already helped me tick off the list; it was finding a man and getting married again; I had always wanted to be with a man, even though Skeleton was a bully, I still missed having male company; another was flying in a private plane; the chopper was a bonus
extra.
We made it to the hospital, and Cora went to deal with her demon alone, and I turned to hunt the
Dormouse.
Dormouse was in traction, unable to move about yet, had damaged his spine, and had to be still for a while. They still don’t know if he will walk again. Moving him was a risk, but leaving him at the other hospital would have put his life in danger; the risk was worth moving him.
“Hi, Dormouse.” I forgot to ask whether I should use his real name or Dormouse.
“Scones, you’re a sight for sore eyes.” His face brightened up when I walked in.
“The move to this hospital was okay? Wasn’t too bad, was it?” asked, sitting beside his bed, pouring him a glass of water and handing it to him.
“No, they gave me painkillers and some sleeping tablets; I slept most of the way. Do you know why they moved me?”
I thought about that for a moment; we had talked about that question, and Xavier said to speak the
truth as best I could.
“How much do you remember about what happened to you?” I asked, deflecting the answer for
now.
“I remember walking down the street, talking with my friends and girlfriend, then a lot of pain, and ending up in the hospital. My girlfriend said the shooter hit a car’s tyres, and the driver lost control and mounted the curb and hit me.
“Yeah, that’s what the story is.”
Chapter 173
“What’s the rest?” Dormouse was smart; that might be why he got away with the shonky busines
he had been doing. Being young also made him overlooked; two attributes that could have kept
him clean if he wanted.
“It was a hit on you.”
“Why? What have I done?” He genuinely looked surprised by this.
“Were you tricked into doing work for the black market?” Dormouse’s face became pale, and a
guilty look filled his face, which would let him down if he got caught by the wrong people.
“How did you know? I did all that I was told, was careful not to be followed, and dressed in a uniform. I did everything right.”
“Because of Bluey, we saw footage in the storage room where she entered when she didn’t need
to, went down to the morgue and stashed the contraband, then waited for you to come and take it.
I am disappointed in you for that.”
“My Mum got sick, and I couldn’t pay for the medicine. Bluey said she would give me what I needed
if I did a job for her. The only problem was, after I had completed the first job, she blackmailed me
into continuing the task when she asked. I didn’t know who to turn to. Who would believe me over
Bluey?” He was upset; his monitor started to go erratic.
“A nurse came running in and offered Dormouse some pain meds.
“No, it’s okay, I don’t need any. My friend was giving me some news, and it upset me, but I needed
to hear it.” The nurse told him to call if he needed her and left, giving me a dirty look.
“You could have gone to Gunner. He would have investigated; that’s what enforcers do. They don’t just kick people out of the club when they’re rowdy.”
“I tried to hint to Oddball, but he chewed my ear off, something about proof, and then I was given dirt jobs.”
“You were moved here because of that attempt on your life. Gunner thought you might be in
danger still, and trussed up like this, you wouldn’t have a chance.”
“I have messed things up, haven’t I? What about my mum? Is her life in danger now?”
“Who else knows about your involvement with this?”
“No one, I only interacted with Bluey.”
“Then your mother should be safe, but I can talk to Demetri and Xavier and see what they can do.”
“Xavier?”

Chapter 173
“Yeah, gunner, he left the club, went back to his old name. Tomorrow we join Demetri’s club.”!
spoke quieter now, alerted to the door being open.
“What? Why?”
“Because Xavier tried to tell Oddball that Bluey was dirty, and he didn’t believe him. They had a big fight, and Oddball packed up his belongings and left,” Cora said, coming into the room and shutting the door behind her; at least Dormouse was in a private room. That was a small blessing.
“But they have been friends for life, like they grew up together; that has got to have hurt Gunner.
“It did; that’s why we all moved. But we needed to find out what you know, and had to get you to a safe place.” Cora had taken over the conversation, and I was glad she was here at last, because didn’t know what else to say.
“My mum, is she safe? Did I bring danger to her? I tried to make her life easier, and I have failed, haven’t I?” he said again, fear evident on his face. For a moment, I thought he was going to cry.
“We can look into your mother, but we need information from you.” Cora picked up his chart and looked at it before replacing it and sitting on the other side of the bed.
“Tell me more about the deliveries you make. For example, where do you drop it off, and is it always the same place? Do you meet people at the other end? Names, descriptions.” Cora probed, pulling out her tablet from her bag, and started to type.
Dormouse began to give us the information we needed. It started with how Bluey informed him that the next package was ready, the best time to enter the hospital. She would have the door unlocked and clear, and it was always in the same place to drop it off, and described four different people he had met, and some of his gut instincts in the area, people and how he felt at the time, with prompting from Cora for more. An hour later, we had a better picture of the process.
“My mother? Please, she’s all I got left.” Dormouse begged again.
“I will see what we can do, and hopefully not too late. You should have spoken out; even if Oddball had growled at you, it would be out there.” I pushed again.
“I did tell the Prez, and got a week of dirty jobs for it. Maybe I should have tried Gunner later, when I got deeper into it, but I was worried I would be kicked out of the club, and then what did I do? I’d have lost all my friends because everyone would believe Bluey, and I’d be the one who didn’t. They don’t want to see the truth.” This time, a tear dribbled down his cheek.
Cora pulled out her phone.
se’s mother is in danger; pull her out.” I could only hear one side of the phone Cora didn’t put it on speaker; I had no idea who she was ordering about.
