Chapter 176-
Chapter 176
Cora POV

A hug from my husband was exactly what I needed when I walked into the office. One look at Xavier, and I felt like I wanted to cry and let all the emotions out that! had been holding in since I confronted Jake.
It didn’t surprise me that Jake contacted my Uncle. The moment I was out of the room, I knew he was lying when he called who he should have seen as my dad, as my uncle. Not that I had ever believed his memory was gone; he said things at the hospital that suggested he remembered more than he let on, and he knew too much to be someone in complete memory loss. Like he only met Sally-Anne and Paul through me, yet he remembers them and not me; how does that work?
Can you remember only some people?
How does he think he met them?
No, my mind won’t let me believe that.
“We need to keep Dormouse and Jake apart. It’s a good thing that we put Dormouse in a private room, but I would be happier if he was on a different secure floor, and ensured their treatment doesn’t coincide. He had suffered enough, and if his mother visits, that could be dangerous. Does Jake know what Dormouse looks like? Plus, his mother and Dormouse will need protection until this blows over.” My mind is busy again, throwing out more and more suggestions. We need to keep them safe. To me, they are innocent in
this.
“Calm down, Cora; we have Dormouse and his mother covered. We are taking her to our private facility to heal. Then a housing complex, which is where I keep most of my men who need a place to live, both single and married quarters; it’s an area which has apartments and cottages, but with high security, because of the type of work the security teams do, they need to know their families are safe so that they can concentrate on their work at hand, not all my team live there. Still, a lot do, and we are building more all the time. As the club grows, they too have homes in that community, and even own shops, giving employment to lonely wives. There is a community center where they can come and talk with other people, share stories, and play games; some like to play card games or chess. A swimming pool. It’s like a mini town on the outskirts of the city, just for the club and employees. They never own the properties; the area belongs to a company I created that is now in your and my names. We control it; they pay a small rent, which is included in their employment package if they choose to live there. There is safe housing, which we use from time to time. That is where we shall place the mother when she is out of hospital; the ladies in the area will give her the care and support she will need.” Dad said, trying to calm me down, and it worked; knowing there was a place like that settled me down quickly.
“Wow, wouldn’t mind visiting there and looking around,” Xavier said, liking the idea; the club had too many members to all live onsite, Living there was optional and required strict vetting before being given a place. Security was the most important for those living there. That I understood, and Dad couldn’t push that idea hard enough; he was looking at me to take over maintenance, upgrade the place, and keep it high quality
and modern.
No pressure, none at all.
Not.
Dad has a lot he wants me to learn and take over, so he can spend more time with Ruby I understand, and

most of it is done online, making the job more an office one than out in the field. I think he deliberately made it that way, and when you have the money, you can have others do the manual work. You do the arrangements, find more work, and yeah, ‘the basics’, as Dad called it. Nothing basic about this to me, and if something were to happen to Dad, he has a team that would guide me in the security side of the job.
My nursing career just went south; I can’t do both, and I had to make a choice.
I talked it over with Xavier, and he was supportive of any decision I made, which really sent the decision back to me, as I had expected.
Xavier had said that he would never try to take over my life or the decisions on my future, and this was his way of showing it. He would only step in if and when a child was on the way.
Child!
Baby!
He was already organising the nursery; he wanted a baby. He didn’t care if it was a girl or a boy, just a mini-us in the making. I heard him telling Dirk to start cleaning a room he’d chosen as the nursery, because it was bright and cheery, and he’d chosen two rooms that would be the child’s bedrooms once out of the nursery. I could hardly believe my ears when I walked down the hallway and heard him talking to Dirk. He didn’t consult me; Xavier told Dirk it was to be a surprise.
I didn’t want to think about that yet; we had too much going on to worry about bringing a child into it.
When did I have that last contraception patch? It must be due to be changed I tried the injections but didn’t like them; they made me moody and played up with my cycle, so I am trying the patch. I have to get the box and the dates I wrote on them and see when I need to change it, or if I was due for the week off, so I can have my period? It was remembering to do this now that it was harder; it was so bad when it was just me, but with Xavier, Dad and Ruby in my life, and all these changes, my patch had not been high on my
list.
The day was done; Dad returned home, taking some of his men with him, and leaving me with the twenty he advised was my permanent group now. I didn’t fight him over it, or Xavier, who would have been on Dad’s side if I did. I know how to pick my battles, and my safety in the men’s minds was not one of the battles I would ever win.
We headed to the bedroom, Xavier talking about tomorrow, our day to receive our cut. I got my days all mixed up; I thought it was tonight. Maybe they moved it when all this went on; as it was at the clubhouse, it wouldn’t have been hard to do. Different if it was in a public venue. Doubt anyone would argue with the President anyway.
In the bathroom, I pulled out the small box that contained my contraception patches, along with a few other medications. I read the label and cringed; I am overdue to change it, beyond the one week that is for cycle bleed, but I haven’t had one.
I pulled out the pregnancy tester, locked the bathroom door, something I don’t normally do, and peed on the stick before getting in the shower to wash, trying not to think about it.
I washed my hair, thinking about what changes the men would expect if I was pregnant. They would put me in quarantine; I reckon they would cover me in cotton balls, if they could, and my security would double, if not triple.
