Chapter 175
Demetri POV
That phone call was the worst.
It makes me so angry that innocent lives, like Dormouse’s mother, are hurt because of these greedy people.
Sometimes I wish I were more bloodthirsty and took the law into my own hands; I would end them for hurting the innocent. But I am not like that; I prefer to turn them in to the law and let the justice system do what it needs to do. My men might use harsh methods to get the answers and evidence needed to deal with them, but when the law fails society, then my men bring the criminals to justice. Finding the evidence the law missed, or didn’t see as relevant, wasn’t that hard when you are not tied up with red tape, like the police are. The police have come to us on more than one occasion and asked for help and to do what it takes to get the evidence when they had run into police and red tape. Not that town, though. I feel that retired or near-retirement-age police officers could be part of this. Maybe not doing the dirty work, but being paid to lose evidence or look the other way.
“Demetri, look at this.” Xavier gave me a printout.
“What am I looking at? Whose phone is this?” I asked as I read some of the conversation.
“Jake’s phone talking to Cora’s uncle.”
“So we are right. Jake is faking it, and I am glad that Cora didn’t say too much, but enough to make the uncle feel safe. The uncle knows she knows he is involved in the black market, and that you are married. Although she didn’t mention you by name, he wouldn’t know how much we know. But she gave just enough information to bait him into sending someone to find out. My daughter had my mind working fast on her feet,” I say, talking out loud, and handing Xavier back the phone records.
“Cora was smart about what Jake had told the uncle; she knew he was dirty, and now married meant she had backup. No longer alone for him to intimidate. The fact that the doctors had been calling Cora to come and talk to him shows how good an actor he is. Will need to keep a closer eye on him. Jake’s parents, please look into them as well. We are still missing something, as this feels personal, not just a shooting situation.” I pulled out my phone and called my investigating team, and added more names to the list for them to check out. I don’t trust anyone at that club to conduct a thorough investigation, and with ex-members getting involved, I am not comfortable at all.
“Coins, do you want us to head to their clubhouse?”
“No. Oddball can handle it; we need to ensure he gets the information he needs. Hacker will keep him on track this time, and I believe Scrubs, once he gets over the initial shock, will help out too.” I tried to sound positive, although I didn’t feel it, not yet. Oddball was showing signs that he was on the right track, but he had yet to prove himself to my standard. I will never fully trust him. He just that chance when he took Bluey’s side and demanded that Xavier come and apologise; that was beyond my acceptance. He didn’t investigate; he trusted not his best friend, but a woman who was good at lying and that was all wrong. Not the signs of a good president, but to quit like he planned, because he saw how wrong he was, didn’t sit well either; he needed to persevere and be the leader others saw him to be.
I feel like I had gone through all this before, but it kept coming back to my mind.

Cera and Ruby walked in the door, and I felt so relieved when they did. After finding out that Dormouse’s mother had been beaten up, my protective side got paranoid, causing me to have bad thoughts in my head
that I needed to get over. I can’t live with fear each time the girls go out; this has to stop.
I moved quickly and pulled Ruby towards me, kissing her hair, rubbing her back. Ruby held on and let me do what I needed, till I could release her.
Once the girls got the kisses and cuddles they needed, we walked them to the lounge chair and sat them down. For the next half hour, we filled them in with the news of Dormouse’s mother, the phone that her uncle was using, and that Jake had been texting all the information he had gathered to the uncle. It was draining talking about it. The man had years of building his empire, and we intend to make it crumble.
“Sorry about Dormouse’s mother, but at least you found her before she died; that would have been hard for Dormouse to cope with. His guilt was already high.” Cora looked like she was going to cry; did she know the woman?
Cora and Ruby then filled us in with what they learned; Jake was not a surprise, but it did grate on me that, again, Oddball dropped the proverbial ball. But the Dormouse situation was not that uncommon, and we will try to help him and his mother as much as we can, even have him join our club, make him feel wanted instead of used; it will take a lot of rehabilitation, and even then they don’t know if he will walk again. I will get a trike built that has hand controls, so he can still ride with us when he is out of the hospital.
“Dinner?” Ruby asked, ever the kitchen maid; she might not be cooking so much now, but she still thinks about food and keeping us fed. Doubt that side of Ruby would ever die; it’s been part of her life for too long.
“Yes. We can take a break, then after dinner, we get into those piles, and I will explain what we are doing then.” We left the office, happy to get out of there for a while. My men were at the main table, the first time this huge room had been used in a while; it was nice having all of them chatting and cracking jokes. These guys read the room well, and know when to be low-key, and have fun, and when to be serious. I’ve been with most of them for over twenty years, and went to school with some of them. Part of why they are my main security team, and get paid well, is that some have families, and, as we live in this city, will go home after dinner and be with their families, like they should. Being undercover can be hard on the wife and children, but it’s the life they chose, and the families understand this and enjoy the perks that come with working with me.
We talked about the party tomorrow.
“Coins, I never thought I would see the day when you had a permanent woman in your life, and I have to admit, a fine-looking one at that. Plus she can cook. What more could you want?” Knuckles said as he raised his glass and cheered us.
“Ruby, Coins said that the only requirement he had for his wife was that she had to be able to cook; that way, he knew she was not after his money, but after getting a larger waistline, and he would have to work harder to keep fit to keep her happy, and keep fit; he wasn’t talking about the gym.” Ruby blushed when she caught on to what they were implying.
“Oh, she can cook alright, but not sure if Dad can keep up with being fit to keep that waistline in order,” Cora answered with a laugh, which made Ruby blush even more.
“Yeah, Coins, you’d be surprised at how fast you can put it on; it sneaks up when you aren’t looking. Better ensure you keep up with your exercise.” That’s my team for you, comfortable around me to stir me up.
