Chapter 19
Cora POV
Clain
The cells were about what had expected, cold and damp, and stunk like urine, vomit, sweat and blood. It
was cleaner than I thought it would be, and the air vents did a reasonable job, but that smell can never be removed; it’s permeated into the stone walls over the years of use. I didn’t like that the shooter was so young, and I get the feeling that it was one of the club members who caused this. That’s sad and sickening at the same time. I was in the shower, washing the stench off. As my mind thought over what he said, he recognised a person at the gate. How did he see him? Was he not in the back of the van? I have no idea, as I was out cold, but I was sure that I saw him being thrown in the back of the van before I blacked out, or
was that a dream?
Gunner came when I called out that I was done. I could hobble out, but that would make Gunner angry, so I did as he asked and called him. He lifted me with ease and carried me as if I were precious cargo.
“Gunner?” I called his name after he placed me on the bed, and was taking the wet towel to the hamper.
“Hmm?” He looked up at me questioningly.
“If that kid was in the back of the van, how did he see the people at the gate?”
“I was thinking the same thing, he wasn’t in the van you and I were in. Maybe he could see out the window; the other van has a side window. The guys might not have sat in the back with him, and he sat up to see where we were taking him. He had a bullet in his kneecap, so he wasn’t running anywhere, or the men at the gate might have looked inside, in which case, he knew we had the shooter, and might be worried he would be fingered. Get to bed, I need to go tell Oddball this.” He gave me a soft kiss, tucked me in and left me alone with my thoughts.
It was only just after lunchtime, and way too early to sleep, but I was so drained that sleep might find me, Gunner must have thought I needed to rest. I am not that weak a woman. Am I?
That man was so young; he didn’t look anything like what I imagined a shooter would. I expected to see an older man, jaded because of what life had dealt him, but that lad had hardly seen life; he wasn’t that much younger than me, and I am only twenty–three.
It was a waste of life, because I couldn’t see them letting that boy leave here alive, not when he was shooting at them, and doubt they would hand him over to the authorities, because it could raise a few questions, even though the club hadn’t been doing anything wrong, it was still hard to explain away why they didn’t call them in, when the accident, happened. I get it, I might not know much about club life, but even if it weren’t a club, explaining why you did what you did, when it occurred, would be the same kind of problem for us all. I think their coming out and attending to my injury kept me alive, when waiting for an ambulance might have had me bleed out.
So while I saved Gunner’s life, the club saved mine.
I would call that even.
Chapter 19
C
Sleep must have found me. I was snuggled up under the blankets, holding Gunner’s pillow to me, the smell of him strong on it. When the door opened, I was awake immediately. Turning to see who had entered, I was glad it was only Gunner
“Hey, did you get any sleep?” he asked, coming to me carrying a tray.
“Yeah, what time is it?” I stretched my arms over my head, and Gunner’s eyes dropped to my chest, a
smirk twitched on his face before masking it.
“Three o’clock.”
“Wow, I must have been tired.” I sat up, and Gunner placed the tray on my lap.
“Are you eating with me?” It looked like a lot of food for just me.
“I have eaten, but if you can’t eat it all, I can polish off what you don’t eat.” He sat on the bed beside me
and watched me start to eat.
“Oddball, said that the man couldn’t have seen anyone at the gate, so he must have seen him once we unloaded him from the van, and got confused. Maybe he had met him once at the gate, and that had his
mind muddled up.”
“Yes, the drug is not perfect, and if his brain was already confused, he was telling the truth, just not when. Can you look into the pub’s security footage? Do they have one?”
“Yes, they have cameras, and Oddball is on it. Going backwards every day will take a bit of time, because we don’t know how long ago they met at the pub, and may have arranged to meet at the gate to get the information for the hit, and part payment. He said he got paid half, and would get the other half when he
did the job.”
“The chick?” I asked, or am I getting confused?
“What about her?”
“She got into our room. You assumed I left the door unlocked, but I know I didn’t, so how did she get in?
Babe?”
“Babe? Huh?” He smiled, leaning in to kiss my hair and snag a bite of the pizza slice I was about to put in my mouth.
“Hey!”
“We have cameras in the hallway, will get Oddball to have security check that our too. That chick should never have got back onto the club grounds. We know she didn’t use the main gate; we are still investigating that one.”
“Hole in the fence somewhere?” I posed, enjoying that Gunner was talking to me about this, when all the stories I have ever heard said they don’t talk shop to women. Even Bluey said the same.
“Possibly, will get the guys to ride the quads, and do the entire perimeter. Any other ideas?”
Chapter 19-
Claim
“I had thought in the boot of a car, or something like that, but that would mean one of the club members brought her back in, because it wasn’t a public day for visitors.”
“I thought of that, it’s impossible to know exactly when she arrived, so we are reviewing the car park
security footage. The security guys are busy, and what they don’t know is we have some of our other members checking the same footage just in case the person who brought her in was part of security, and
