Gunner POV
Tucking Cora into bed and leaving her to rest, I didn’t know if she would sleep or not, but she looked a little
rattled over the experience, and thought it was best she was alone to sort out her feelings, rather than join
the others and get questioned. When she wasn’t ready, I was positive that once she had worked through
what happened in her mind, she would be fine; she’s a strong woman, a clear thinker, and that’s the
impression I get of her.
Back down in the office, we went over what we heard.
“There’s more to this; His story keeps changing. Do you think that he’s not exactly lying, but believes the bullshiet he’s giving? Cora said it was not foolproof, and he could still lie, but might let slip snippets he didn’t mean to. The prisoner was more talkative once he received that shot.” Snail looked around the room expectantly. None of us knew what to believe anymore. A feeling of betrayal was high; it definitely seemed more and more like an inside job, or someone who wants us to believe it was, to make us look internally.
“What I do know is this was making us jump at shadows, looking suspiciously at our own men, those we have lived with and trusted for many years,” I spoke out loud what most of us might be thinking and feeling, but didn’t want to say out loud.
“Agreed, but we need to investigate all possibilities. Let’s see what the footage reveals. If we can find the day he arrives at the gate to talk to someone, we can investigate from there. I am not suddenly going to distrust my club brothers because of this disjointed man, who can’t get his thoughts together,” Dozer adds, getting nods around the room.
“Do you think he’s one of those who hears voices, and what he was saying was part of different voices?”
“That might explain his constant change of thoughts. Doc?”
“Could be, and that makes him even more dangerous.” We continued bantering around the ideas, but by the time the meeting was over, I was exhausted and wouldn’t mind a mental break from all this.
I went to the dining hall and ate what I could; food wasn’t high on my mind, but since I’d missed lunch, I had to eat, and while I was at it, get something for Cora. I hope she managed to get some sleep.
“Gunner, want to relieve some of the tension?” A girl too young in my mind to be offering this purred seductively to me. I don’t get it; they still try to get me to be them when they know a woman was upstairs sharing my bed.
“Char, you know I amn taken now, and I don’t stray, buzz off.” I flicked her hand away as she reached out to me, touching my shoulder, as if that would make me interested.
“Don’t be like that, I can make you feel good.”
“I SAID NO!!.” I growled at her, and she pouted in return, huffed and turned her attention to one of the other guys. Where do these girls come from? Grrr, they are a big turnoff for me.
Chapter 70
Ate till I was almost full, and made up a tray for Sora, moving quickly to the stairs, to get away from that perfume that clung to the air, from Char entering the dining hall.
Cora turned to look at me when I opened the door. She’s a very light sleeper; maybe that’s part of her nursing training. When on call, they often stay in a hospital bed and need to be alert from the get–go.
We talked while Cora ate. I was pleased that she had an appetite, even with the conversation, which had to suck, not an everyday conversation piece, but she had some good thoughts that I need to share with Oddball. We don’t involve women, like ever, so this was all new to me, finding a woman who can think like this, and not just want to jump my bones.
Jump bones, like right now, would she be up to that?
The bathroom call ended that thought. I finished eating what was left on the tray while she did what needed to be done and called out for her return. I shifted her so that most of the weight was on my good arm, and used my sore one to support her back. I won’t lie, it does hurt when I try to lift too much with that arm, but what’s a bit of pain between friends? Nothing I can’t cope with or block out.
I left her with the ladies and headed back to Oddball. Knocked on his door, and it flew open, revealing Dozer, stepping around him. Scrubs was in there, too.
“Problem?” Oddball asked, nodding for me to take a seat.
I filled all of them in with my conversation with Cora and her ideas.
“That girl’s got some good ideas, some we had thought of, but it’s good to see an active mind, and not just on the groin for a change. She will make Bluey a good second at the hospital. Bluey needs someone she
can trust, someone from the club, who would be even better for us.” I puffed up like a peacock, with his
new brood of hens, at the praise that Cora was getting.
“Will work on what we’ve gone so far, till we can find something. A lot of men are reviewing footage. If
there’s something to see, we will find it.” I left them to mull over the information, which might trigger
others with fresh thoughts.
Cora was where I left her, surrounded by more ladies, asking questions. Cora looks like she was enjoying
r the company and fitting in nicely.
“Gunner, you are here, good, can you take Cora and me to the hospital? I want to get the paperwork set up, so when she starts in a week’s time, we have the red tape completed.” Bluey gleefully asked, all excited
over Cora.
“Cora, I thought you said you had months off on leave.”
“I do, but Bluey said the hospital needs me, and will put my leave back on, to use another time. I am ready
to start back at work.”
“But your thigh?”
“Gunner, let it go,” Bluey huffed. She only wanted to get her hands on Cora.
Clas
Ham cuncerned you will cause Cora to take longer to recover; she’s still hobbling when not using the crutches. Being on her feet all day or night will only exacerbate her injury.” I defended my concerns.
“I am only going to do the paperwork and look around, regardless of what Bluey wants and is pushing for. I won’t start work till I can move around free of pain,” Cora responded, putting Bluey back in her place.
To my surprise, Bluey’s face lit up, seemingly pleased.
