Biker's Claim The Broken Angel is Mine (Cora and Jake) novel Chapter 53

Chapter 53

Cora POV

We headed down for dinner, and I didn’t want that conversation, but after talking to Gunner, I was feeling a

lot better.

Gunner made some sense, maybe they didn’t mean it the way it came out, and they might feel threatened

after seeing how easily I fitted in and did what was needed quickly and efficiently. They have been the leaders of the emergency department, and my arrival, not needing to follow Bluey around for a week, might have shocked them. I was good at my job and could usually read a situation quickly, but I wasn’t looking at them; I was looking at what I had to learn about the job and the staff I was working with. I didn’t realise there might have been an issue with my competency. Being of a high standard, you would think they would be happy, but Gunner said they had so many failures that I stand out from the rest and could be a powerhouse they hadn’t bargained for.

I get that, it makes sense.

Dinner was the usual banter, the guys loved to chat about who they slept with and rate them on a scale of one to ten. Sometimes, I think they like to gossip more than women do. Gunner calls it bragging rights, not gossip, but it sounds the same to me, no matter what name you give it.

My office.Scrubs nodded to me, and I followed Scrubs and Bluey to the medical rooms, Gunner at my side. I wanted him there, whether these two liked it or not. Gunner agreed that two against one was not good odds and would be silent observer.

my

Bluey put her hand on Gunner’s chest, as if to stop him from entering, and went to say something before he entered the room, but Scrubs gave a small cough behind his hand, and Bluey dropped her hand, sucked in her lips as if to stop herself from saying anything, and let Gunner pass.

We took a seat and waited for one of them to talk. It was better for them to start and give me an idea of

what I am up against.

Firstly, I want to apologise. Earlier, I was a little stressed and took it out on you.Huh? A little stressed? That’s what they are going to call it now?

I noticed that you have a way with patients, not just children, but adults, too. You calmed that raging man who was worried over his sick wife, then you put the drunk in his place. As a result, he sat down and behaved. Numerous nurses and doctors commented on how well you work under pressure, and never appear to get ruffled. That’s not taught, that’s a gift, and you have it in spades.

In spades, what a silly phrase, but most know what it means.

What Bluey is trying to say is that you do not need to shadow her for the week; you proved yourself in the first half hour, so it was not necessary. We want to change your roster; instead of waiting for the end of the week, work the day shift tomorrow, then take a long break and take over the night shift from then on. That will give us some time to inform the staff of the changes, and you can meet more of the night crew. It will

be one month nights, one month days.Scrubs made it sound like it was a promotion, but it just meant

started what I was going to be doing a few days earlier, nothing great about that. But I let that slide; at

least they were not pushing children on me, as Bluey had threatened.

That’s all, see you in the morning.Bluey dismissed me. I don’t know what happened at work yesterday

that made her this cold; she wasn’t like this before. Maybe it was, as Gunner said, Bluey adjusting to not being the goto person all the time, and s cramping her style, just a little. She likes to be the center of attention, and on my first day, I became it, but that’s what the first day was always like: you either sink or swim, and it looks like Bluey would have preferred that I needed her more than I did.

How’s our boy doing?Gunner asked, not moving out yet. We didn’t need to ask who he meant.

Alive, will take a while to recover, and therapy was a hard hit. Word is that the shooters have come to town,Scrubs answered, looking glad for a change of direction.

Gunner nodded, and we left them to talk. I was not ready to say much, was still digesting the changes, not just the roster, and what that might mean to Gunner, but Buey, who could hardly look me in the eye now. Did I upset her because I didn’t need her? Now I am going in circles. Fickle woman. She’s a lovely woman, but has a few insecurities. Not much I can do about that.

Gunner and I turned in early, and sleep came quickly. Being on my feet all day after a sixweek break worked me out more than I expected. Gunner didn’t complain about the lack of intimacy.

Morning was too early; today was the same routine.

The hospital was not as busy and chaotic as yesterday. A quiet night compared to the average. I worked till morning tea, and took a fifteenminute break, checked my emails for work, which were not many, but my personal emails were very full, a lot of responses to my complaint sss, and others wanting me to do more for the park, more design work suggestions, as the change in the park footpaths, had gone down well, giving the cyclist they own route, keeping them away from the internal area where children play and joggers run.

I came back from morning tea to the call that two ambulances were on their way in, and two more were soon to follow, due to a multicar/truck pileup.

All hands on deck.

I cleared beds ready for the incoming, sending some patients home with meds and selfcare.

We will take the ambulances. You will continue clearing the main floor,Bluey suggested as she raced to the ambulance bay.

Okay.” I worked for about an hour, things moving quickly, nurses taking tea breaks, nothing out of the ordinary. Then I heard a name mentioned by the police as they talked about the victims of the accident, and I walked over to the curtain and pulled it open.

Lying on the bed unconscious, tubes hanging from his mouth, and on life support was Jake. I moved to the other bed, and there was what I assumed was SallyAnne. She was a mess. Almost the same as Jake.

Sally Anne’s face and head were all bandaged up, her arm looked to be broken, and she was waiting for an MRI, other X rays and scans, the same as Jake.

Scrubs, where’s Paul? asked softly, trying hard not to let my emotions get the better of me.

You know the victims? Not answering my question.

My exboyfriend, exgirlfriend, and Paul, my stepbrother.I looked around for Paul. Dad’s going to be pissed when he hears they have been in an accident, and somehow it will all be my fault.

The police will want to talk to you about them. The police will need information to contact the family,Bluey said, having heard us talking and come to listen in.

Are you okay?Scrubs asked, noting my pale face.

Shock,I replied, because I thought they had gone home days ago, they must have lingered in one of the motels just out of town.

Scrubs led me to a nearby room and told me to sit. They went to get the police, and still, they hadn’t told

me about Paul.

Two police officers entered the room, along with Bluey.

Do you need me to stay while the police question you?Bluey was all sweetness and politeness.

No need, Scrubs will need you.She nodded and quickly left the room; one of the officers closed the door. You know the victims? An officer pulled out his notebook and pen.

Yes, SallyAnne, Jake and Paul.

How do you know them?
