Chapter 72
Gunner POV
The members were giving me a stick. I had said for years that I would never settle down, and now I am claiming a woman as mine.
They called me p***y whipped, apron strings, under the thumb, any name they could think of, to rib me about taking a woman and having her on my lap. I didn’t mind, and Cora laughed at most of them.
When Cora left to go upstairs, I hunted down Scrubs to find out what was going on.
“Scrubs for a minute?” I found him talking to Oddball, giving him an update on Dormouse.
“What’s up?” Scrubs and Oddball turned to look at me.
“Bluey was a bit off. Did Cora’s father come today?” It was the only reason I could think of that would have made Bluey look so shattered.
“Yes, he came, screamed at everyone at the hospital, that we had failed his son, but the lad was dead at the scene. There was nothing we could do for him. We asked him to calm down; otherwise, we would have called the police. In the end, we didn’t need to call the chief, as he was already on his way here after receiving calls from patients about a disturbance that needed his touch. They escorted him out and advised him to settle down and not to come to the hospital unless escorted by police, because he was
threatening innocent lives. His behaviour was unacceptable. The man advised us that the funeral home
would be in contact shortly to take the body back to his home. The man left the building, under the escort
of the chief, but he left a trail of shattered doctors and nurses in his wake. I have filed a complaint with the chief, including footage of his time in our hospital. understand grief and anger, but this was over the top. Poor Cora, if she had to live with that man all her life. He was psycho. Bluey had taken the worst of it before I stepped in, and the police arrived.”
“Sorry for Bluey, our most chirpy woman in the club, who has had a few weeks of drama. I will let Çora know that he has been and gone, but not tonight. Tonight I hope to have a warm body in my arms and a peaceful night’s sleep,” I chuckled as I left them to it, not really having much else that needed to be done
today.
Cora was naked and in bed, my hopes for more tonight just rose a bit more, and after a few words, Cora was soon screaming out my name, before we both slumped onto the bed, replete.
Cora was asleep before me. She must have been exhausted. I know I am usually the one asleep first. We were in the same position when I woke up, Cora in my arms, sleeping peacefully. Today I will have to break that peace, but hopefully she will be fine with the news that her father has been and gone, and will be safe to return to work when she is ready.
I slid out of bed, went to the bathroom and showered. Cora was up and dressed. When I came out. I was a little disappointed that they didn’t come and join me. Cora raced into the bathroom, which had me

ehuckling inside. She must have been bursting, and wasn’t game to come and do her business while I was in the shower.
“Cora, before we head for breakfast, I need to talk to you.” Cora took a seat at the table, and I pushed a coffee to her that I had made while she was in the bathroom
“What’s up?” Cora didn’t seem concerned yet.
“Bluey was strung out when she came home.” I hesitated, thinking about how to word this.
“Why?” She pushed, and I guess there’s no easy way to break it down,
o, I told her about her father arriving, the mess he made at the hospital, and the police escorting him out
the building.
He was close to being arrested for disorderly behaviour. Patients reported him, which saved the hospital. The guards just tried to stop him from being violent; they could do little about his verbal diarrhea.” I’ve
provided as much as I could.
Cora didn’t seem surprised.
“That sounds like Dad is always concerned about his boy. He must be lost now, with how to move forward. He had been grooming Paul to take over his business. Now he had to find someone else to step in, and guess what, I would never be that choice.” Cora spoke truth, no hurt left in her voice, as she had always known she was not good enough.
“He has a tail on his now. According to the police, he was still in town, staying at the hotel, and had not
booked a flight back or a private plane. My advice would be not to go to town alone and to be prepared for
him to be at the town hall. There are posters all over the place regarding it, and your name is on them. He might come to stir trouble that has nothing to do with the park.” I was positive he would be there and out
to cause trouble.
“Okay, I have a day with Hacker. We will send the drones to the depot, or we will attempt to see if they can make that distance. It’s farther from the truck stop, service station, or café where we stayed overnight. Hacker was also breaking into the run sheets to see if we could work out what time the driver normally leaves, which direction he takes, and what his stops are along the way.” Cora was going to be too busy to worry about her father today, and tonight she can review her notes for tomorrow’s meeting.
“My day will start with Oddball and Dizzy. We are going to work out who to send out, and where along the to be men who are ex–service people or something like that, used to hiding way to

“We can send men along here. We are waiting on Hacker to see if he can get the schedule; if not, they will stay the night along the road. We have time to place them. If we are lucky, we can place our own tracker on the van. We have a few ideas we are working on.”
Throughout the day, we talked, planned, and made various changes as information was updated in the spreadsheet Cora and Hacker were working on. Scones came in, and gave us sandwiches and coffee, as we continued to work together. By the time my head was spinning with too much information, I was ready to call it a day.
“Gunner, I want you at the truck stop. You have met the manager. If there are issues, you can resolve them with him more effively than with the others. I am counting on you to keep the peace with the public. We are trying to c
